New WCC TV deal
Apologies if this is already up somewhere else.

https://wccsports.com/news/2019/9/19/men...ments.aspx

Quote:ESPN will broadcast 17 games during the regular season, along with the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship game of the WCC Men’s Basketball Tournament. ESPN will continue to showcase the WCC Women’s Basketball Tournament championship game and a selection of additional women’s basketball or Olympic sports contests each season during the term. Each broadcast will also be available on the ESPN App, accessible on computers, smartphones, tablets and connected devices to fans who receive their video subscription from an affiliated provider.

The Conference and CBS Sports begin a new, multi-year partnership starting with the 2019-20 season. The deal features a minimum of nine men’s basketball games each season on CBS Sports Network.

Runs through 2027, not sure the money.

The fools! Don’t they know how hard it is to get CBSSN!
I hope this means the MW is going with someone else and not with CBSSN. They are probably taking the MW time slot if it is so. Don’t think they would give the MW a better time slot.

they really aren't taking the MWC time slots though... WCC basketball plays mostly Thursday/Saturday. MWC basketball plays mostly Tuesday-Wednesday/Saturday. So can do both really easily. It's really not an either/or situation.

If anything, I bet the WCC is paying ESPN for production costs and the like rather than actually receiving a payout. They might be on a commission basis with signups to ESPN+ who enter through a WCC portal or something.

CBSSN is losing some American content to ESPN+. Not surprised to see them trying to replace it.

RE: New WCC TV deal
As one who only started receiving CBSSN a couple of years ago, this is pretty exciting news. The only drawback to the station is that it's not offered in HD on my cable system. It's nice to be able to watch games from different conferences during basketball season since there are so many conferences (32) to choose from. For as comprehensive as ESPN tries to be with its college hoops scheduling, it can't do it all (but I do enjoy watching Friday games from the Horizon League, MAAC, and MAC). Fox and FS1 get to be somewhat boring with its heavy dose of Big East games, with a few Big 12, Big 10, and Pac 12 tossed in to break up the monotony.

I am happy that CBSSN is on my cable roster. They show a LOT of G5 college football games, and I often find myself putting CBSSN on my third home screen, moreso than say NBCSN. For example, this weekend they will be showing:

San Jose State @ Air Force (Friday)

CMU @ WMU (12 noon)
Georgia Tech @ Temple (3 PM)
Colorado St @ Utah St (6:30 PM)

That's football all day long on Saturday, and some pretty good games. I will probably put all of those but the CMU/WMU game on one of my screens.

Feel bad for you that is not in HD because for me it is, and the production values are, well, CBS quality. Plus, they have now come out of the dark ages and you can watch on your phone too.

It is a good deal for the WCC. It gives them another outlet for national TV exposure. So they have for national TV exposure:

1. ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU
2. CBSSN (minimum nine games)
3. BYU TV (last season six conference games, eight non-conference games)

ESPN Network games involve either Gonzaga, BYU or St. Mary's. So it will be interesting to see if CBS has the same kind of deal. This CBSSN deal is probably more about exposure and less about revenue.

The WCC also had 14 conference games televised last season on Spectrum SportsNet, the broadcast home of the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Dodgers, as part of their long term deal. Spectrum produces and broadcasts a WCC Game of the Week, which is distributed to television partners throughout the WCC footprint.

CBSSN will have 8 regular season CAA games this season. So that is probably taking some of the American content as well.

Those Spectrum games often are blacked out on the DirecTV sports package. This could help some of the lesser schools in the league. Santa Clara, for example, only had one game on the ESPN package last year. Pepperdine as well.

I was joking this past winter with my NCAA Tournament pool partners that CAA basketball must have been a myth since I never saw any of its teams televised except for the conference championship game! Of course, I did catch Northeastern playing at the Charleston Classic and Charleston on NBCSN when the Cougars played at VCU (or was it Davidson?), but other than that, it was difficult if not impossible to find CAA regular season games on any network available to me (same goes for the Big Sky and Summit League too).

RE: New WCC TV deal
And it will still be hidden this season since they signed with the pay FloSports for the vast majority of their conference games.

The only televised games Charleston had were at Oklahoma State on RSNs, two of the Advocare tourney games on ESPNU, that VCU game, and a game at Northeastern that aired on NESN Plus (Northeastern signed a side deal with NESN to broadcast a large chunk of their home events).

And that was better than the year prior (2017-18). One game was televised prior to the conference tournament (at Wichita State on CBSSN).

A long way from when Comcast/NBCSN had the deal earlier this decade. NBCSN showed 6-8 games a season nationally + the semis and the finals of the tourney. But Comcast had games syndicated around the country to all of their RSNs, meaning people in Chicago and northern California got to see a lot of the CAA games air locally. They’d do at least two games almost every Saturday plus mid-week games.

Then they had a couple of years on ASN (Sinclair’s sports network they started before Stadium). They showed a decent amount of games, but they weren’t easy to find. The last season, they wouldn’t even have the broadcasters at the games. They’d call them out of Kansas City.

CBSSN picked up the ‘17 title game, then the semis and finals the last two seasons, and now they have this package.
