From Steve Bell's scouting reports, another under the radar player.

Shainen Carter 6-8 Sr Detroit King: Good long-term value recruit if Carter continues at the trajectory of improvement since first seeing him at a scrimmage before his junior season. Not so different from Yusuf Jihad, now a freshman in the portal from Oakland, in how he’s wiry strong and runs well. Puts some spirit into his screens. Extends well on turnaround shots, hard to defend. Posts up willingly, but more tall than wide

Jumper doesn’t look the prettiest, but it goes in and he’s confident with it. Also doesn’t look like the greatest of competition, but he’s got a lightning quick first step and uses his body well to get to the basket. He looks like someone that can score at our level. I like the emotion that he plays with too.

Good start for Coach Heath!

I can't (or don't) follow MI H.S. sports, but this school is D-3 school so the competition isn't at the highest level.

So far Heath seems to know U.S 23 pretty well. Flint and Washtenaw County is a good start.

College coaches likely evaluate players based on their performances with their travel/club teams and not their HS games. I know for a fact that it's that way in baseball and softball. The only reason a college coach would go to a HS game is to develop a relationship with the recruit.

Doesnt strike me me as true point more like the high version of Spottsville. Love his rebounding aka,Tim Bracey from my era. Raw talent which Heath will excel at developing. Sends a message. We will recruit local.

You're right on with that last sentence. The first commit is a local HS kid. That is symbolic of what Heath has said and sends a message.

Good start for Coach Heath!

Sam his shooting technique is horrible, releasing the ball that low just ain't going to happen in the NCAA if you are being guarded. That said, we are now in a different era. We now have a coach committed to scoring the ball, shooting techniques can be refined with coaching, those quicks and his college ready body cannot.

Beilein at U-M made a lot of his money recruiting 2-3 star recruits because Izzo killed him with the 5 stars in Michigan. DJ Wilson was considered a joke recruit at U-M, sportswriters winced when he arrived in Ann Arbor as he was found wanting of NCAA basketball skills. Three years later he was picked 17th in the NBA draft. Jon Teske was tagged to be one of the "white guys" who play only in the last minute of blowout games, and for two years he was. As a junior and senior, however, he became a legitimate player and in fact Heath coached him last year in the G-League.

We now have a coach with developmental abilities instead of just being an absolute "zen master" of the zone defense, which I must admit Murphy was, his variations and adjustments were incredible. At the end of the day, however, Rob's two prized recruits, Ray Lee and JT4 were splashes as freshman, never got much better and by the time they were seniors, both were suspended for games. That simply cannot happen in a successful program.

Stan has been around the game long enough that he can assess athletic talent and how he utilize and develop it. It is not longer "The Zone, The Zone, The Zone".

Nice!

Looks like he’ll need a little time to develop, but the talent is there! I love keeping guys like this home. We have A LOT of scholarships to give. They can’t all be immediate contributors. Having developmental guys like this is a way to balance the program.

Nice pull.

As you said, I really like his quickness. He’s probably going to need some time figuring out how to run an offense at the D1 level. His jumper is funky, but I’ve seen worse and he obviously has a ton of range.

The thing I’m most concerned about with his jumper is how long it takes for him to shoot it. Seems like he’s a “max effort” guy who really needs to get spring out of his legs. Hopefully the coaching staff can help with that.

Thanks for breaking this. Is this considered a good recruit? I don’t see him on verbal commits, so can’t tell if he had other offers.

I'm not sure he has any other D1 offers. Honestly I think he would qualify for the term "project". Has the raw athletic talent but needs to improve his skill sets.
