Great question. Randle is EMU’s best shot-blocker, but he’s young and his probable playing time is unknown. Most freshmen bigs excessively commit fouls and take themselves off the court. If he doesn’t do that he should compete for playing time.

Hope you don’t mind if I answer you no later than the middle of next week. Appreciate if you don’t ask why the delay.

Actually doesn't matter Miggy because EMU leading the,MAC in shot blocking is merely conjecture on your part

True, but having players who have a track record blocking shots is a good place for any team to start. Also an indication that EMU may well have a far superior defense than EMU had last year. One can even conclude, EMU has no defense last season.

EMU playing a man-to-man pressure defense should also dramatically reduce both number opponent three’s attempted and number of opponent three’s made. All the above should reduce opponents to scoring far fewer points scored regardless of fact that EMU will have a young team.

The above helps explain why HC Heath has confident in his team.

I agree there’s reason to “pump the brakes” even though many of the younger players have one year of playing college ball, it does take a team time to gel, and there’s also concern about new players committing excessive turnovers and fouls that often dictate the outcome of games. I believe that EMU’s excellent coaching will address that problem.

However, my main concern is if EMU still needs to add an additional shooter, if EMU is to have a chance to not only have a winning record, but to excel.

Miggy,

I appreciate your posts, but please be careful about stating a man to man defense is better than a zone defense. That might incite a riot with some of the zone worshipers on this board. I agree a man to man defense is better for the reasons you listed which is why its the predominantly played defense at all levels.

While Luckey is going off on the zone (again), I'm watching Kenny Smith explaining how the Heat are befuddling the Bucks with it.

Such is life.

It was cool watching Kenny actually show how the Bucks are unbelievably unable to penetrate it in the paint.

Steve, I would hope that Heath is open to playing the zone on occasion, there are situations when it can be a weapon. Your opponent may be frontcourt dominant and three ball deficient or you might not match up well with them. It is also a potential game tempo changer.

The zone, however, is not a primary defense in today's three ball happy game. The godfather of it, Boeheim, had a good first year in the ACC and has subsequently morphed into Mr. .500 the past seven years much like his disciple Rob Murphy. This from an iconic program that can recruit fleet footed athletes with long wingspans that can actually shoot the ball as well.

My problem with Murph was that EVERYTHING EMU basketball did was based on the primacy of playing the zone defense. Dashonte Riley, Tim Bond and Ty Groce were all freakishly great athletes and Rob polished their defensive skills to the limit. Unfortunately Riley left EMU with a PPG average in single digits, Bond with an embarrassing shooting stroke and Groce with a ton of unfulfilled potential. I'm with Luckey.

I’ve made it clear in a separate post that I’m for playing a zone defense inside (with a big guarding the rim from all comers) and an aggressive man to man perimeter defense. Will be difficult to beat EMU if it stops the 3-ball and defends the rim, thus forcing opponents to shoot 2-point jump shots that are converted at a low percentage.

I prefer to see the second interior defender to be primarily responsible for being the first line of defense for stopping dribble penetration from anywhere on the perimeter, and thus relieve perimeter defenders of this responsibility. I’ve seen this defense employed in HS when national powerhouse Oak Hill Academy was held to 46 points. The Miami Heat’s Precious Achiuwa was the floater taking on Oak Hill’s perimeter driver to the hoop. The Miami Heat deploys him in a more complicated zone defense today.

A zone defense on the perimeter results in close-outs on 3-point shooters, and increases the percentage of opponent 3-pointers being converted. As compared to a man to man perimeter defense that both reduces number of 3’s taken and percentage of 3’s made.

He's been at 3 high schools, including a year at Lincoln. Let's see how many colleges he can attend in 4 years.

Maybe please note the new staffs first 2022 offer was to a PG. We have Luka and Spottsville. Lowder in my opinion is not a PG by the way NIU recruited 3 in their 2021 class.

Interestingly both also have offers to Siena. Seems like Simon has been a great coaching acquisition in terms of recruiting so far.

Because generally we group our recruiting threads at the top of the page. So here is an idea request a special thread for 2023 mens and another for football 2023 and I will post the offers there. And while we are at it delete old recruiting threads that aren't,needed.

Noah is James Scott’s step-brother. I know him well. Great EMU addition.

Noah is a true point-guard.

Had an amazing HS career culminating in his starting for IMG Academy, and winning the National HS Championship. He was just a Junior.

He’s been the starting PG on HS teams that twice beat HS powerhouses Monteverde Academy and Oak Hill Academy. Expect him to be a magnet in drawing other high-caliber players to EMU.

Thanks for posting the videos! He has high major skills on all attributes but his jump shot. I’m glad the last video has him recognizing he must improve his shooting fg percentage. Going from a 5 star to 3 star should make him hungry. My take is he may have thought he could walk into ECU and dominate but found out ECU is still D1 basketball.

Overall he’s worth taking a gamble on because of his jump shooting improves, he could be a high major talent playing for us. His freshman stats are just so so averaging 3pts in 10 minutes but if he played 30 minutes he’d have great stats for a freshman!
My final thought is that Noah will thrive In Heaths system!

RE: Unofficial 2021 Men's Basketball Recruiting Thread
Playing time not always based on merit. ECU had veteran guards, and he was new guy on the block.

ECU played in a system that was based on getting the ball to the.bigs inside. The painted was always cluttered so perimeter players couldn’t get to the hoop. That negated half of Noah’s game. That won’t happen in EMU HC Heath’s spread the floor offense.

His jump shot was fine. At ECU, Noah shot 52.9 percent (9-17) on two-point jump shots. Small sample, but that’s excellent.

At EMU, Noah shot 33 percent (5-15) on three’s. Some taken as he was passed the ball as clock expiring. Also a small sample. Changed his shot this summer so he’ll shoot more with legs, less with arms. He’s a good jump shooter.

In HS, Noah was a tremendous ball-stealer. Playing in Heath’s man to man defense should bring that back into his game.
