RE: Power 4
BIG TEN
Adds Virginia and North Carolina

SEC
Adds Virginia Tech and NC State

BIG XII
Adds Clemson, Florida State, Miami and Georgia Tech

PAC-12
Stays at 12

The ACC leftovers Pitt, Syracuse, Duke, Wake Forest, Boston College and Louisville add four to six of the following: Houston, SMU, Tulane, Memphis, Cincinnati, Temple, the Florida twins and UConn. The ACC gets the Big East treatment (the conference they destroyed) and gets demoted.

There's enough there in that "ACC leftover" to prevent it from getting the "Big East treatment" imho, especially when you consider the basketball prowess that conference would have.

Plus unless these are football-only conferences, I have a hard time imagining Duke being left behind in any major reorg. If there's a further split between the haves and have-nots, Duke will certainly be on the haves side of the divide.

If blue blood Kansas was in danger of being left behind so can Duke. They’re Rice on steroids.

As far as having plenty of “ACC leftover” to prevent it from getting the “Big East treatment” none of the schools in the demoted ACC have a blue blood football program that can keep it as a power league. That was the perception the Big East had when Miami left even though they held their own in OOC and bowl games.

But none of this is happening so it’s a moot point. The ACC and Big XII are not going anywhere. The likes of Duke, Wake Forest and Boston College won’t get demoted. The AAC schools will still be in G5 purgatory wondering if there’ll ever be a P5 opening. This is good thread for the off season but we are in the third week of football season and there are better topics to be discussed.

Good point. There's no way an AAU basketball power like Kansas gets left behind either.

And that same Kansas was two seasons removed from their top 5 ranking and Orange Bowl victory plus their 2008 NCAA Tournament championship when the Big XII was about to explode in June 2010 and they were talking to the Big East just in case.

It’ll be interesting what happens to Duke once Coach K retires. Will they not miss a beat or become the next Indiana and UCLA? Time will tell.

I think even if they fall to power emeritus status the way Indiana and UCLA have, their standing as an institution will be a paint that covers a multitude of on-court sins. Though it should be noted that Duke had some pretty good teams in the 60s and 70s, so it wasn't like Coach K took the Bad News Bears and coached them up into the peaks of college basketball glory, so unless they misfire spectacularly on a series of coaching hires and recruiting offers, they should never not be in the discussion even if they're not a top-10 regular.

Remember Hatch of Utah wanted to bring anti trust suit against the NCAA for not allowing Utah be a national champions? What if other senators who are not part of the power 4 throw a stink including Kansas? You still need a power 5 which you can make room for state schools to get in. UMass needs a spot as well since Boston College is not a state. Buffalo gets a spot, and the three military academies.

Will never happen, the wave of the future is 9-10 team conferences, easier to schedule and less mouths to feed.

I think is is very likely also. I expect the AAC to have 18 teams just like the rest so it’s two divisions of 9... so we will add 4 more...

West Texas A&M, Tarleton, SFA and Sam Houston belong in the SEC as well.

We can kick TCU and Baylor to the curb in favor of those schools.

I'm good with the Texoma 4 joining the SEC and letting the leftovers fight Northern Arizona, Grand Canyon and Utah St for a spot in the PAC 12.

RE: Power 4
I think the way to resolve the issue about how many teams should be included in the CFP is to discontinue the CFP. In my ideal D-I for football, there would be three subdivisions. I-A would include the P5 conferences, which would be reconfigured to have 73 members plus independent Notre Dame. I-AA would have 66 members in 7 conferences. The remaining 110+ schools now called FCS would be I-AAA.

I-A schools would be required to schedule at least nine games against other I-A teams, and would not be permitted to schedule any I-AAA opponents.

I-AA schools would be allowed to count one I-AAA opponent toward bowl eligibility.

The P5 would be radically changed, as follows. The two Big Dogs, the SEC and B1G, would get bigger - much bigger. No school currently in one of these conferences would be left behind, and none would leave voluntarily. Instead, each would add 10 schools poached from the remaining three P5 conferences. The remnants from those three would then add the cream of the AAC and MWC to meet the 8-member requirement.

The B1G and SEC would each be organized into three 8-team divisions, East, Central and West. Each would conduct a Conference Championship Tournament consisting of the three division champions (determined only by their record in a full division round robin schedule) plus one at large team selected by whatever method each of these conferences sees fit.

The semifinal round of these conference tournaments would be held on the second Saturday after Thanksgiving (in what is now known as Championship Week). The SEC would play its CCG at the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day. The B1G would do the same at the Rose Bowl. A week or so later the champions of these two conferences would play each other in a new bowl game (let's call it the College Bowl) which would be jointly owned by the B1G and SEC.

The ACC champion would host the Orange Bowl in prime time on a week night between New Year's and the College Bowl. The Big XII champion would host the Cotton Bowl and the PAC champ the Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Day. The Peach Bowl would pair two P5 at large teams in a weeknight prime time game after the Orange Bowl. At this point, the field for the NY6 bowls would include nine division champions (3 each from the B1G and SEC and the champs of the ACC, Big XII and PAC) plus one at large team from the B1G, one from the SEC and one from the remaining P5 schools.

I-AA would realign into seven conferences, none of which would have more than 10 members. The sixth I-AA conference would be a new Northeast Football Conference (NEFC - football only) and the seventh would be the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) which has been equal in strength over the past 8 years to all the other I-AA conferences, and stronger by far than any other FCS league.

These are my proposed P5 Conference/Division alignments (new conference additions in bold):

SEC East: Auburn, Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Duke, North Carolina, NC State and Virginia

SEC Central: Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Miami

SEC West: Alabama, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, LSU, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Missouri and Kansas.

B1G East: Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Purdue, Maryland and Rutgers

B1G Central: Illinois, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Texas and Oklahoma

B1G West: Washington, Oregon, Stanford, California, UCLA, USC, Utah and Colorado

ACC: West Virginia, Pitt, Boston College, Syracuse, Wake Forest, Louisville, Cincinnati, UCF, and USF

Big XII: Baylor, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Iowa State, TCU, Houston and Memphis

PAC: Washington State, Oregon State, Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State, San Diego State, Fresno State and BYU

ACC

North: BC, Uconn, Syracuse, Temple, Pitt, WV, Louisville, Cincy

South: Virginia, North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest, Clemson, GT, FSU, Miami
