Nebraska Game Thoughts
As painful as this game was to watch, our new coaching staff needed to experience this early in the season if they want to make a run for MACC. NU revealed some serious vulnerabilities that would've been exposed by the MAC teams. Frank Solicj, Chuck Martin, etc are way too good of coaches not to have seen them as well.

I counted at least 4 kickoff offsides on Nebraska, including the punt after the safety. Not game changer type calls, and I agree with the hold on the first NU TD, but just shows selective enforcement.

RE: Nebraska Game Thoughts
Other thoughts on the Nebraska game.

Their fans, they are dream fans. This is what you want when you think of a football game. These guys are there to enjoy the game and atmosphere, as they are engaged and friendly to people they play against. If it's a good play against them, they'll congratulate you. They're the friendliest people I have ever met and inviting into conversations and tailgates. I met a bunch of great people out there, so it's tough to root against them.

The atmosphere, lots and lots of energy here. Tailgates exist at every corner you turn into, and you can definitely tell that a party is going on. Lots of interesting ways to throw a party, and it seems that each families tailgate seems to blend in together. In addition, campus is crawling with people walking around everywhere, kind of like Old Vegas...

Traditions, they've got some really cool things going on. Balloons being launched into the air, different kinds of crowd waves, lights at the conclusion of the 3rd, dueling fan sections (like Red vs Black) and many more. These types of things get you engaged and involved in the game. I can only imagine the wonders they do to keep people emotionally invested in the team.

Anyway, with all of that being said. I am sure at one point the university and town of Lincoln weren't much at some point in time until they grew into what they are now. So how do we bring some of that atmosphere and help grow our University and town into something similar? I would wager to say, we compete constantly with Northwestern for the rights to the best football team in the state. So how do we get out of the MAC and get ourselves a big ass stadium with engaging fans? There's nothing I would love more than to see that happen.

Dear HawaiiToNIU,
One thing you need to know about why everyone is so enthusiastic about Nebraska football....it's the only game in town. There are no major league franchises in Nebraska, and the other colleges there are very small, or do not play as in the same caliber as Nebraska. So that's all they have.
I've been there during football season, and all that you mentioned is true. It is quite remarkable, but when you are only it, that's it.

Good point. We are too close to Chicago, and there are MANY other substitutes. I am dreaming and want NIU to pick up badly. We have a good product, just not the fan fare or fans.

I like what we have. I love the fact that our stadium is not one of those mega monsters and that I can park a few steps away. We just need more fans at the games. That will come with winning some exciting games (including bowl games), the end of the ESPN contract (I should live so long!), and better weather. Unfortunately, the ESPN contract won’t end for a long time (and will probably be renewed), and better weather is a rarity. One of life’s constants is that if the Huskies play at Huskie Stadium, it will rain.

RE: Nebraska Game Thoughts
What we will never have that programs like Nebraska have is the civic pride that gets intertwined with their school. The Cornhuskers represent all of Nebraska. It gives them a team to feel good about where they live. Same with the likes of Bama. Even the Longhorns or the Wolverines, the state has pride in those teams representing them. That builds community. NIU will never have that. UofI doesn't have that. NU doesn't either. The Bears and Cubs have it here. Those are the teams Chicagoans get puffy chested and proud about. Without that you'll just have sporadic fan numbers depending on the teams success.

Spot on and it’s awesome. Huskers dominate all media in the state. Western Iowa types hate it since their local tv comes out of Omaha. 369 consecutive sellouts.

True. My bad. 250+ straight for volleyball. #1 vs #2 in the nation tonight.
