I had to work today and didn’t see any of the game, but listened to a bit of it on the radio while driving. Alabama had the ball when I turned it on, and Cox used the phrase “wide open” twice within 4 plays.

When they weren’t wide open we got called for pass interference...
Chippy crap really. Bama doesn’t need that so why in hell do it?

Honestly, Bama’s a well disciplined team and we aren’t. No Hopson team has ever been. We have dumb penalties every game. So I’m not surprised by this fact. We can blame refs all day, but refs didn’t have to show up for us to get it out on us today. We were simply outclassed in all areas.

Bama doesn’t need the refs and yet they demand they get theirs anyway. Glad to see Hop giving that ref hell for not calling the horse collar at the beginning of the game. Bama fans I know will admit they cheat and are actually proud of it. They are proud they can get away with it even against a 39 point dog.

All True. Sad and pathetic. Have a bama friend and he just laughs. When i texted about the horse collar and bs PI call...he just laughed.

Hell, prob woulda scored if not horse collared but didnt even get a 1st down out of it. Then the bs PI. Coulda had ball at 50 possibly 14-7. Instead, 21-0. Bama doesn't need the help beating a 39 pt dog!! Why not have a fair game?! They can go to hell. Hope never play them again.

This is the reason I wish we wouldn't schedule Alabama or any other upper tier SEC team...the SEC refs will go out of their way to protect their marquee programs. That pass interference call was total BS. None of us would have been surprised to see the refs dropping yellow flags left and right if Southern Miss was actually threatening Alabama- that's what they do. What's so irritating about this is that we didn't pose any threat as to whether or not Alabama was going to win. The only thing I can figure is that the refs knew a lot of people who put bets on Alabama with the 39 point spread and wanted to make sure they covered.

What did you expect? Really. That hundred to nothing describes what our budgets have evolved into. We can not compete with the Uber rich. It is ridiculous to think so. We need to let them move on and either we make it playing compatibles or give it up. No one hates the reality more than I do. I’ve been waiting for them to do their deal for years now. I am beginning to believe I won’t see it in my lifetime. Especially with the have nots begging them to beat the chit outa us for a million dollars. I’m about done with college football anyway. It has passed me by.....

I keep saying this, but it’s all part of the plan, and we fell for it. We gave the P5 the power to make all the rules because we were afraid of missing out on our crumbs, but now instead of them leaving the NCAA and creating a sh*t ton of political & tax repercussions in that wake, they’ll just sit back and starve us out until we’re the ones begging to leave them.

I’m sick of this ‘we can’t compete’ garbage. Tell that to Boise. Tell that to ODU, who had Virginia on the line this week. Tell that to San Jose State who beat Arkansas. Tell that to Georgia State. It doesn’t come down to how much money you have, though it no doubt helps. It comes down to getting a coach that can excite recruits and actually teach them discipline and fundamentals to hang with the best. We have none of those.

Ah yes. Perennial losers can beat and compete with SEC schools, but we cannot. GA State and San Jose State are not good and haven’t been good in a long time. The only poor comparison is that the programs I listed, when compared to ours, shouldn’t even be in the same sentence, and yet they’re going ahead of us.

And we can say Arkansas and Tennessee are bad, but we lose to bad SEC teams all the time! Kentucky a couple years ago wasn’t good. Tennessee wasn’t good. Arkansas wasn’t good. We lost to all of them. It took a team full of NFL talent Monken left Hopson to get a win against Kentucky, and that took a miracle comeback.

Please, tell me why ODU, San Jose State, Georgia State, ULM, and so many others can be competitive with P5 teams (I’m not even talking top tier here), and yet we get beat like a red-headed step child every time. Tell me why that’s a poor comparison.

100% agree. All the examples you gave are completely valid. These teams are doing what Southern Miss once did on a semi-regular basis. And I take my hat off to Boise State and the football power they've become. They've shown what excellent coaching combined with athletes who buy into the program can accomplish. They don't win every match up with P5 teams, but they do so with enough regularity that they are respected by every team that they play.

One of the things that irritates me is the defeatist scheduling policy that it appears the athletic department adopted several years ago. People moan and groan about how weak our conference is, yet many of these people are agreeable to the idea that playing an OOC slate like Alcorn State, South Alabama, and Arkansas State with one...and only ONE...game against a P5 team is the way to go. And then who do they schedule for one game? Powerhouses like Alabama and Auburn with SEC refs. I always hated the term "prostitution games" because I came from a time when it was believed Southern Miss football could compete and win against any decent team on a level playing field. In the case of Alabama and Auburn- and I'll toss in LSU and Florida they ARE prostitution games.

I'd happily accept five home games in exchange for a quality OOC schedule that excludes SEC powerhouse teams. You don't like the boring conference we're in with the lame games? Then generate excitement by adding a 3 game OOC slate against teams that might be winnable during a given year. A slate like Purdue, Arkansas, and Florida State would generate some fan excitement. And more importantly it would generate excitement in recruits. At least if you let it be known to the recruits that you aren't scheduling those games for a payday, but that you're putting together a football team that expects to play them and win. Quality recruits want to play against a quality schedule. You'll notice I didn't say 4 quality OOC games. I left one game open so that those of you who look forward to the Alcorn State or Jackson State game can still have that option.

RE: Usm at Bama
Here’s the thing:

The amount of money we don’t have today relative to the other 100+ teams out there vs. the amount of money we didn’t have relative to the other 100+ teams out there in 2011 isn’t the difference between a Top 25 finish and where we are now.

The amount of money we don’t have relative to the other 100+ teams out there today vs. the amount of money we didn’t have relative to the other 100+ teams out there when Monken left sure as hell isn’t the difference between winning the division and never finishing within 2 games of the leader in the same exact freaking conference.

Also, realize a lot of the money these “wealthier”—and I use the term loosely because our athletic department is actually more self-sufficient than damned near every one of them—G5 schools that are passing us by are spending all that money on stuff we’ve already long since had because we’ve been playing IA/FBS football for as long as those descriptors have existed. The majority of the G5 would love to have the infrastructure we do. When Fedora got here from Okie State, he said he was actually surprised how many of the things needed to be successful were in place already. I want to say Monk may have said something similar, but I don’t recall that as distinctly, so I’m not going to say for certain.

Coaches who are capable of doing so can and always have had big success here. It’s why we can hire the kind of people who go on to P5 programs and NFL teams. We just have to be willing to give those kinds of people the opportunity instead of settling for less.

It’s why coaches want to come here. They know they can have success and move forward to their dream job. We need to accept that will be the case and go for those young, hungry coaches. And if we find a Gary Patterson who just ends up loving USM but doesn’t lose that hunger and get complacent, then that’s great. But if we lose a coach every four years because a P5 school took him, then that’s great to. Leave us better than you found us.

Since you obviously were on the committee that hired Hop maybe you could enlighten us on who said ‘no thank you’. No one on this message board has any idea how the hiring process played out.

What are you even talking about? I fail to see how my comment that coaches want to come here has anything to do with being on a committee or who was on our list. I didn't even pretend to know how the hiring process plays out.

That is exactly what I’m talking about. You have no idea what the level of our ‘desirability’ is. BTW, I don’t either but I suspect it’s not what it once was. We do not have any real draw above the other D1 programs that have popped up around us now. We do not even have near the financial resources of a UAB or South Alabama. Much less a North Texas. Forget the Airport schools and ODU and Charlotte. So, how are we a prime destination for any coach or 18 year old second tier recruit?
That said, I don’t believe it is out of reach for us to win in this conference. We do need some leadership and a little luck to get back to that point and maintain but it’s not unreasonable to want to reach that level of success.
That’s all I have to say about that.....

Hopson’s immediate predecessor was a Big 12 coordinator when he applied and left to take an NFL gig after a 9-win season and a division title. It’s absurd to think Hop was the only applicant of discernible quality or his performance over just 3 years and 4 games has decreased our status that badly since.

Because we played Alabama not Tennessee or Virginia. Like I said earlier, we don’t need to EVER play Alabama again. Play the losers of the P5 and have a chance. And sorry, but Ms State doesn’t qualify as a loser any longer. They have had success whether we like it or not and are a pretty good team this year with a lot of young players. Reality is a tough pill to swallow but we aren’t ever going to compete with the Alabama’s of the world again. We just need to succeed where we find ourselves today.
