Mitch Albom on ageism

Mitch is always an easy entertaining read ("Tuesdays with Morrie").

Takes on ageism after Castro's comments in the Democratic debates. The closest we every came to nuclear war was with the relatively young JFK. I think his relative inexperience is what nearly brought the world to disaster.

"...This should be a big issue for any presidential candidate. But do you ever hear it brought up? Virtually every form of discrimination is hashed and rehashed on the campaign trail. Yet with more than a third of our population over 50 — a third! — nobody seems to make this a topic.

A recent AARP study showed that nearly two out of three workers 45 and older have experienced age discrimination on the job. Another study of 2,000 workers over 50 showed that more than half were forced to leave their jobs at some point due to "layoffs, businesses closing, job dissatisfaction or unexpected retirement." Of these, only 10% found another job of equal pay or rank....

So ageism can come from senior citizens as well. It’s built into our culture. For the life of me, I don’t know why this isn’t a bigger issue — among candidates and society in general — considering the enormous attention we give to other forms of discrimination.

After all, we will never be a single race or gender.

But all of us, if we’re lucky, will one day be old."

If a person's age is legitimately slowing their mind, there is no way around that being an issue in most fields of work. It doesn't happen to everyone but to many it does. Just a fact of life. That doesn't mean they should be disrespected for simply aging, but it has to be a factor in politics or hiring processes, again, if the signs of aging are there in a specific person.

What age are you referring to? This states 45(!) and over. No idea how old you may be, but I know I was a HELL of a lot "smarter" at 46 than I was at 26 or even 36.

Now if you're talking about 76 or perhaps more, ok I guess, but that isn't what this is about and very clearly cannot be applied with a broad brush.

This is more about trimming salaries and hiring 2-3 younger people for the cost of that one senior management type. Not to mention the possible increase in benefits, primarily health insurance.

That and the supposed "woke" hipster culture apparently requisite for many Co.s
