I will always stay mad that he tanked the end of the 2015 season, BUT what he built and what that led to made it a whole lot easier to take.
Yea...that performance against SMU was disgraceful.
The bowl game against Auburn was down-right embarrassing.
It's the Temple game that rubs me wrong, not Navy or Houston.
Mailed. It. The. Hell. In.
They didn't prepare for Navy at all. Most of the players I talked with said they did ZERO special coaching to prepare for the Navy offense or defense.
Houston is the one that ticks me off. We lead at half and had been dominating. Fuente took over play calling and made sure we lost... we were still down to a missed FG from winning in spite of the ridiculously bad play calling in the second half.

I was at the Houston game and it was sickening when we missed the sure thing field goal. ( Click on my twitter bar below to see a picture I posted in December 2015 about a possible new job for Fuente at the time.

I couldn't call a FG that long a sure thing.
Midtown, go back and watch that game. See the difference in play calling in the first and second half. The stupid decisions we made. I didn't know Fuente took over play calling until after the season. That came from the person that was calling plays.
The tanking came from multiple players and a close source to the coaching staff.
Water under the bridge. Our program is in better shape than at any time in my life. The future is definitely bright, so I won't worry about the past.

Don't kid yourself. Norvell will be gone the first decent P5 offer he gets.

Coach Norvell might be waiting for an NFL gig. He is a players coach. I'm pretty sure he has already gotten decent P5 offers. That's the reason why we keep giving him raises every year.

Score was 20-7 at halftime. According to you Fuente took over the play calling in the 2nd half. Memphis scored TD's on their first two possessions of the 2nd half to make the score 34-14. Then Dorceus fumbled on the 3rd possession and Lynch threw an interception on the 4th possession of the 2nd half.

Look at the change of play calling, especially later in the game.
I am going by what the former OC told me at the radio show. I asked about the play calling and he said "don't ask me, I didn't call a single play in the second half."
The tanking part is from a source close to one of the coaches.
I am only going by what I was told from multiple sources. And the whole second half against Houston seemed... off. We should've blown them out that game, we were the MUCH better team!

RE: Justin Fuente
Did Fuente call the defense against UH, too?
We shut down their starter in the 1st half, but when he went out injured, their 2nd stringer came in and turned them around. From what I remember, we couldn’t get a stop.

I somewhat agree. Our defense was geared for a running QB and we didn't adjust very well.
I will always stick by what I was told. However, other than discussions like this one... I honestly don't give it a second thought.
I wouldn't trade where we are as a program now for that season, even if we had gone to the Access Bowl. It would've helped in perception and would've made Coach Norvell's job MUCH easier, but other than that... I love where we are now. Next year will be even better!!!

If you can get them to go for it on the front end then it would be a good idea, but to get one home game in the future IF the coach does well - is it worth missing out on hiring that next great coach?

Fuente decided to go to a place where we wasn’t 100% in charge of choosing his own coaching staff. I do wish him luck but he made his own bed picking that kind of situation.

I have a handful of players, former coach and someone very close to a former coach that would argue that.
I honestly don't care either way anymore, just that it's the only reason... well, keeping a staff member here to recruit for VA Tech, that I don't have all great feelings for him. I wish him nothing but the best though. He definitely helped change the direction of Tiger Football.

put it this way- Which seems more likely?
1- Fuente agreed to take the VT job, started planning his new job but thought he could do both since he thinks he is a bad ass and can work more than anyone else. Our team was very good but our opponents were good enough to beat us if we were not 100% at our best. Fuente THOUGHT he was giving 100% but you cannot give 100% to two projects - or 110% to any one project so our team was not good enough to win those games given Fuente's divided attention (even though he spent 60 or 70 hours per week on preparing for the games.
or
2. Fuente was afraid of wining out and being selected as playoff team or at least a NYD6 game and being "shamed" into staying so he sabotaged the team to make sure they did not go undefeated?

Sure, but that can be true and still not mean Fuente "took over" playcalling, and especially not mean that he did so in order to sabotage the game. As I remember seeing it written, probably here, Fuente called a lot of plays when he was HC. Dickey suggested them and Fuente OK'd it or gave one of his own.
As far as "tanking it" from a source close to one of the coaches, again, I don't doubt you were told that, but it could have been a disgruntled coach who wasn't going to VT, or it could have been inadvertent tanking because he was distracted / lost his edge. Well, that being said, I remember that there is a legitimate beef with him. It came out later about him having late night meetings and already working on things for VT while he was still here. I remember when I read that (ESPN site I guess), I thought "Man! I can't believe they let that slip out, that's breach of contract." I imagine the ESPN/Yahoo/whatever site's attitude is that a lowly AAC team doesn't matter and it's only important how one of the big names can be helped.
So you're partially right. I just can't believe he would lose games on purpose. I guess he just wasn't 100% focused.
