Mach, if you will pay attention for a few minutes and set aside your blind hatred for the GOP I'll educate you on what really happened.

1. The democrats are 100% lying about the events that took place yesterday. This is irrefutable. The screamed at the sky and turned this into a national story about how the GOP used dirty tricks to override the veto. THAT IS NOT WHAT HAPPENED, AND THERE IS PROOF.

2. Since Cooper vetoed the budget, Speaker Moore has kept the override vote on the official calendar. During negotiations, Cooper asked the speaker to take the vote off the calendar during negotiations. Speaker Moore told him he would not take the vote off the calendar because this was a good budget that had support from democrats in both the house and senate. Cooper was holding the entire NC budget hostage for medicaid expansion that is wildly unpopular in NC. Speaker Moore also told Gov Cooper he would hold a vote the first chance he had to override the veto.

3. If the GOP wanted to play dirty politics and override the budget, they could have done so on multiple occasions. They did not.

4. Democrats are LYING when they say they were told there would be no votes in this session. It was announced Tuesday 5:20 second mark and there were no objections. No-vote sessions are called and announced on the calendar and from the Speaker's email ONLY. The VERY FIRST item on the calendar for Wed am was the budget veto override.

5. Democrats are lying that "they" were at 9/11 memorials. ONE democrat house member was at a memorial service. Democrat Deb Butler let slip during her outburst where most Dems really were. In VIOLATION OF A COURT ORDER that all work on the new district maps be done IN PUBLIC VIEW, she stated most democrats were 'downstairs' in a closed room working on the new maps when the budget veto override vote was called.

6. Democrats ALLOWED this vote to take place. House rules state there must be a quorum (61 members present and voting) to pass bills. There were 55 republicans and 12 democrats presents. If the democrats really wanted to stop the vote they had TWO options. 1 - walk out of the chamber, leaving the Speaker without a quorum, or 2 - call the member that were downstairs working on maps upstairs to vote against the override. They did neither.
Truth is (and Speaker Moore has said so in interviews this morning) that many democrats quietly thanked him for getting this done without them having to vote. Gov Cooper has threatened to have any democrats that vote for the override primaried in 2020.

Remember, this was a budget that passed WITH democrat votes in June. It's a good budget. Teachers get yet another raise, teachers get money to spend on classroom supplies. State workers get a raise. I even think that NC taxpayers are getting a refund on excess taxes paid (that may be in another bill and not part of the original budget, i can't remember). Gov Cooper vetoed the bill solely because he wanted medicaid expansion to be adopted. Think about that, he held up and entire TWO YEAR BUDGET for a single item that doesn't even have broad democrat support in NC.

Now, do you think that there will be any reporting of the actual truth in the national press? Of course not. Democrats are lying to manipulate public opinion because that's all they've got. NC is almost immeasurably better off since Republicans took control of the state legislature in 2010. All the democrats have left is to lie.

The funniest part is they keep bringing up this lottery vote. I was actually pretty involved in state politics during that time period, and I remember that well. There is no comparison.

Back then, if you had an excused absence, you could “pair” your vote with another senator who was voting the other way. One of the Republican senators was going on a vacation, and had agreed to pair with a Democrat who was voting yes. The Republican messed something up (I think it was a technicality, he hadn’t correctly gotten the absence excused or something like that). At that point, the Democrats could have voided that pairing, and the vote would have passed because John Garwood was in the hospital. One of the Democrats tried to do this, and admittedly scummy Bev Perdue was all for it, but they didn’t go through with it. They had the vote locked up, but didn’t do it. It wasn’t worth it.

So instead, on Friday of that same week, the Democratic leader announced they would vote on the following TUESDAY. 4 days later. 48 of 50 senators showed up to vote. The guy who was on vacation couldn’t cut it a little short to be there. The guy who had been in the hospital was out, and was home recovering from a leg infection. He absolutely, 100% could have been there for the vote. People have showed up for lesser votes in worse shape then him. It was a contentious issue, and he had been getting a lot of pressure from both sides in his district. So he sat it out so he wouldn’t have to cast the deciding vote for or against.

LOL at trying to compare that situation to this train wreck.

Forgot to mention that the senate WASN'T EVEN IN SESSION. Senator Basnight called them back into session for the vote knowing that the GOP member on his honeymoon couldn't get back in time, and Sen Garwood (73 years old) had just been discharged from the hospital and was resting at home 160 miles away from Raleigh.

This wasn't a trainwreck. Call it hardball politics, but there was nothing dirty or shady about it.

It’s a train wreck in the sense that it’s a national media story killing the GOP. It’s 100% legal and within the rules, but I still think this is going to harm the state GOP (how much remains to be seen). It’s a bad look.

I’m not following this story nearly as much as 05 (back when I was an optimistic college kid lol). The narrative about the 05 vote is false though. Again, they had 4 days notice about the vote. The GOP leadership, at the time, portrayed it like Brown was on some remote island and couldn’t be reached, and Garwood was on his death bed.

Brown was in Myrtle Beach. Garwood had a hurt leg.

Brown said he couldn’t be reached... in 2005.... in Myrtle Beach.

Garwood could be reached, and could have been there. If not, he could have paired his vote. He declined both. He was primaried the following year, and he mentioned multiple times (before he died) that his decision to miss the vote was a calculated political move that backfired on him.

This makes much more sense

Dems could have been there if they wanted

RE: NC Budget - Veto Override
I don't know for sure exactly what occurred that kept the Democrats out of the session. There are several stories being circulated. What I do know for sure is that they thought no vote would be taken during that session. There is no way in hell they would not have been in their seats if it was a voting session. Could the Democrat leadership have screwed up and told the members incorrectly that no votes would be taken?...Yes. I don't put anything past these nitwits. My guess? The GOP engaged in some level of subterfuge to make this happen.

Roy Cooper is a horrible Governor and was holding the business of the state hostage over the expansion of Obamacare. He was not willing to compromise and while Im happy with this result..but...I am still disgusted at the method used.

The lack of statesmanship is not relegated to Washington. It is in Raleigh also. Statesmen sit down with each other...bash out the issues...compromise and move forward. That is now a tradition relegated to the trashcan of history.

NC Budget - Veto Override

Maybe that's possible but I find it hard to believe any Democrat will vote that way based on today. So if so, it's a really stupid move on their part that is going to get a ton of bad publicity. Especially coming off a special election vote in which they won two races.

Way to go Republicans.

Only 1 democrat house member was at the memorial that gov cooper attended. His first remarks were along the lines of him not remembering seeing any of them there. Once the lie was put out that the democrats were "all" at a memorial, he changed his tune and furthered the lie.

I still contend that most house democrats are happy this happened and they didn't have to vote.
