Louisville plunged to 191 and WVU is sub 200. Hardly P5 quality.

On the other hand, Temple and USF have made academic cases for themselves.

How has UC fared on this over the past few years? Improving or going backward?

IIRC they were up to #124 a few years ago before sliding down to #147 last year (and now #139).

UC was off the radar nationally for decades and the past 10-15 years have been characterized by upward movement, overall. The University set some goals for improvement in key measurable areas and made it a priority. It's had positive results.

Academic reputation does matter when it comes to conference realignment. Sure, WVU and Louisville got bids but both were battlefield promotions in a sense as the B12 and ACC were ambushed by the SEC and B10. When movement happens again, I'd rather be in the eligible pool with great athletics accompanied by a strong academic profile. There is a reason Boise State will never be in the Pac 12 and it's certainly not their football results.

Yeah, they've truly only moved about 3 pots one way or the other in the last half decade since their huge bumps in the mid to late 00's. There are anywhere between 10-20 schools tied at any number in the 110-140 range, so moving down one spot actually looks much worse. I think being in the 120-140 range is probably our manageable ceiling at the moment, but with the capital improvements for the Colleges of Business and Law coming down the pipes, we could conceivably get up in the 110s consistently. I just don't see us operating in a way to be able to get to a Top 100 institution year-in, year-out simply because we do still hold firm in our mission to education EVERYONE, and not just kids with a 30+ ACT.

When Zimpher was President, the official goal was to be in the top 100 and have an average ACT score of 27.

Two years ago, the average ACT score was 25, last year around 25.6, and this year’s class, 26.1. While UC is behind schedule there has been steady improvement. Other schools, like Temple and USF, have moved more quickly.

The pool of national universities in the rankings and the standards have not remained static. So #139 doesn’t mean what it did years ago simply because there are more schools.

UC does not accept everyone. 25% are rejected. Not the highest number, but it is more selective than it was 15 years ago when it was in the upper 80’s and many fewer applied.

I see no reason why UC can’t be ranked like Miami OH, Binghamton, or Buffalo.

Seriously, folks, I think UC would get a lot more applicants if they simply changed the perception of residing in an unsafe neighborhood.

A visit to the doctor last Friday started with a conversation about football and ended with doc telling me he picked Wright State’s med school over UC due to crime.

Coworker’s son is at lower-ranked Kent State. Why? In her words, “far too urban,” and “scary ghetto.”. I’m guessing the same reasons white suburbanites send their kids to OU.

I suppose the university could resume expanding, despite neighbor protestations, into its surroundings. Just eat into the blight a bite at a time until it's gone. For starters, how about annexing everything between campus and Reading Road?

I think UC has done about as much as they can with respect to this issue. This coworker son sounds like someone who just wanted to go to college in a small town. There's lot of people who prefer that experience (especially people who come from small towns themselves or suburban communities that have basically only been built up in the last couple decades).

I think Bearcatman hit the nail on the head that our ceiling is probably in the 110-140 range. The school does reject 25% as you note, but the schools in the Top 100 appear to reject ~40% or more. Its noteworthy that UC's "Next Lives" initiative has a plan to increase the number of students from Cincinnati Public Schools. This does not sound like they plan on being more selective in the future, in fact this sounds to me like the acceptance rate will only get higher.

From an outsider's perspective (I return to Cincinnati once or twice a year), the urban core is changing at a more rapid pace than at any other point in the last generation. UC has done wonders in Clifton. Combined with a steady march in property improvements coming up from Over the Rhine and a substantial investment in Peebles Corner and Walnut Hills, I feel like the organic changes will mesh with UC's intentional investments in a substantial manner.

CNN and MSNBC must have compiled these ratings. UC is much better than that.

I think UC is really in a great position moving forward. We've really put some distance between OU and us. Given that OSU has pretty much decided that their future lies in competing with the top 15 public research universities in the country rather than being a purely "Ohio" university, and Miami has comfortably settled into their role as Chicago's safety school for conservative, preppy kids while letting OSU wipe its ass with them in the national rankings, I think this leaves UC as the clear choice for Ohio kids who can't get into OSU or don't fit the preppy, Greek Miami douche profile. All the other Ohio publics, including OU, are chasing us from now on.

Just because UC intends to recruit more CPS students doesn’t necessarily mean the school is abandoning admission standards.

First of all, as a self- defined urban university, I think it’s well within UC’s mission to recruit from its largest urban district.

Secondly, less qualified students go into the feeder two year schools and enter the main campus only if qualified.

Thirdly, CPS does produce high-quality students. Walnut Hills is the highest rated high school in Ohio.

20 years ago, UC’s average ACT score was 23. Now it’s 26. It’s a long term trend, a steady climb. I don’t see a reason for it to stop.

Idk how old the doctor is and could very well be true but that’s an easy way of putting not getting accepted.

I know about 7-8 (all born in Cincy) current medical school students right now (OSU, UC, Alabama, OU grads) and all wanted to get into UC and Ohio State bad due to their hospitals and overall prestige as well as living in a nicer city (most would say compared to Dayton). The ones who didn’t ended up at Wright State (Nothing to be ashamed of!).

Taking a quick glance at the medical school rankings both UC and Ohio State are top 50 (OSU#30 and UC#38) while Wright State is in 90-120 range. Medical schools are extremely competitive today compared to 30 years ago though.

I agree with your reasoning and supporting statements. There is nothing wrong with Wright State, but who would choose to go there if offered by OSU or UC, based on rankings alone? Who is turning down Johns Hopkins for medical school (#2 nationally) because it's in a tough neighborhood in Baltimore? Medical students are among the most competitive academically and will mostly choose the best school that will accept them.

Randomly ask ten people west of the Mississippi or east of the Allegheny where Wright State is and you'll get a blank stare. Like most of Ohio's regional universities, they have no national visibility. Some lament being "city-named" but when you're in a major league city such as Pittsburgh, Miami or Cincinnati it has its advantages too.

That's why I'm thinking it was more of a "I'm going to give you a reason despite me not getting in" situation, than this doctor actually choosing one over the other. Plus, Wright State is a DO as opposed to an MD...and if the person in older than 40, well, let's just say that wasn't exactly even a comparable option in terms of perception of degree until recent.
