52. ESPN FPI
ESPN FPI uses number of games played on ESPN and the SEC network as a key metric , obviously it is flawed.*
*slight exaggeration but ESPN FPI is bogus as a three dollar bill- Ole Miss, utk and UCLA are ranked ahead of us in this useless poll
If UTK and Ole Miss had played our cupcake schedule and not an SEC schedule, they would be 2-0 too...
So if Ole Miss had played Ole Miss and Southern they would be 2-0?
That's what I always hear from SEC fans so it must be true
It's absolutely the truth... in their minds. It's how Bama, who played three ranked teams in the regular season, played a much tougher schedule than anyone else.
Or how Georgia, who played Austin Peay, MTSU, UMass and GA Tech can still be considered a tough schedule because they played 3 ranked teams in the regular season (4 if you count a 6-6 South Carolina that never deserved to be ranked).
The strength of the SEC lies in the perception of the SEC. Their preseason rankings keep them ranked because beating a ranked SEC school carries a lot of weight, even if that school was overranked to begin the season.

One of FPIs factors is recruiting rankings I believe which I think is BS.
Secondly yes we beat Ole Miss @ home but based on the game from a computers perspective the teams were fairly equal taking home field advantage into account.
Just another technique of the 'man with his thumb on us'.

ESPN FPI is a malicious pro-SEC, pro-blueblood metric.

Perceptions are built over time based on head to head competition. We are not expected to beat most SEC teams in most years because we have lost most of the games we have played against them.
We are not expected to win most games in most years vs SEC teams because in most years our recruiting ranking is far lower than even the worst recruiting ranking of the worst SEC teams.
We are not expected to win most games vs any SEC team in most years because in all years all SEC teams have annual budgets and overall resources far exceeding any we have ever had in any modern day year.
So perception is reality when the deck is stacked. To crack the rankings only a handful of G5 teams have built enough cred to be close enough to join the club and can’t make any mistakes to stay in the club. Most of those are in the AAC but not many in most years prove it on the field.
Data and history are not the whole story but it is an important part of the story. A constant whine about getting left out of the club is futile. When we do what UCF has done over the past 5 years years we will have earned what UCF has earned. Respect and annual rankings.
Even after all what I wrote I expect us to win every game we play against any and all opponents.

Its just going to be tough to get the national respect we deserve as long as we keep scheduling cupcakes like Mississippi and Arkansas.

ESPN are the only ones who pay attention to the FPI. We would do best to never mention it in another thread.

According to one oddsmaker I heard, we get about 3.5 points for home field. We were favored by more than that the entire time. I think it may have dipped to 4 points late in the week. So close to evenly matched, but we were still recognized as the better team. Before the game was played.
Now, AFTER the game is played, which is really what these rankings are based on, there is no doubt to anyone who the better team is. And it ain't really close.
