Hold up. Didn’t Coach Underwood say that exact thing during his rant defending Ellis Johnson on the call-in show that time?

I put that quote up bc of that "football is football" comment. Now that you mention it, perhaps that's why it rings a bell.

Go after a Big XII Offensive Coordinator. We seem to have success with them.

I wouldn't call taking an inherited 9-3 team with an NFL QB and RB and turning it into a 7-6 team a birdy. More like a double bogey.

You do need to work on your comprehension or at least don’t comment when you don’t fully understand.....
I’ll help you though, when an average golfer birdies the first hole he plays (in Hopson’s context, Kentucky) the rest of his round to an unrealistic expectation....

I'm pretty certain he was talking about winning game 1....

as I noted above and to your point, hence, he wrote down a 6....

So no, the Troy game won't seal Hop's fate lol. Thread title should just read "season should seal Hop's fate".

Not sure we can pay more than what B12 OC's are making.

We're stuck with a 500-700k HC...and in 2019 (with nearly everyone except USM being able to afford a million dollar coach) and that USM is essentially dead last in CUSA in athletic revenue, a 500-700k HC will almost always net us 6-7 wins a year, and maybe a bowl trip to NOLA here and there. We got lucky w/ Fedora/Monken...we were getting our bang for our buck, but in 2019 we're truly getting what we pay for.

My point being that what happened to us then could and probably will happen again with the leadership we have firmly entrenched. We just don’t have the resources or ATHLETICALLY THINKING ADMINISTRATION to sustain. The Fedoras are more likely to turn out to be Ellosses....

Ha. Well thread title says "should" seal fate not "will" seal fate. That was on purpose. But yeah, i get your point and was aware of that as wrote the caveat.

Ill say this; The Troy game will weigh heavily on the season outcome and Hops coaching tenure here. If beats Troy, we should be fine in conference. Lose and his head is on the chopping block. Not much room for error if losses this weekend, imo. If wins, then maybe the worlds not falling apart after all.

Will be interesting. In short, the Troy game will likely be a microcosm of the season. If i were betting, win and hes fine, lose and hes fired at seasons end.

I disagree. I don't think you'll ever see USM repeat the type of hire Elloss was. Truly an incompetent old dinosaur completely out of touch with the younger generation of football athletes. All future hires need to follow this formula:

-young, up and coming coach who's HUNGRY
-has a lot of experience coaching at a school with a terrible budget
-doesn't see USM as a destination job but a stepping stone job

Like Up2Stuff said in another thread, "If I were on the search committee for a new coach (assuming a search happens at some point), I would have one question for sure... Where do you see yourself five years from now? If the answer was anything other than - "coaching in a P5 conference making boatloads of money and shooting for a National championship" - I would thank him for his time and tell him to get lost.".

We're a stepping-stone job for HC's. We must embrace it. We'll never be able to pay much for a coach, so we've gotta go after the younger hungry coaches and not the "he's one of us" coaches.

I just really think you're inflating how good MSU is by not letting that loss be damning in and of itself. They're going to be a 3-4 win team this year. They're one dimensional playing a ton of Freshmen. And we got pounded by them, even when we knew exactly what they were going to do.

I'm honestly surprised so many are giving us a chance at Troy.

I've seen numerous posts like this across several of our boards with people claiming that State is terrible and there are no excuses for losing to them, etc, etc. These people are living in the past. We haven't beaten MSU in over 30 years (Reagan was still president)! THREE DECADES! The landscape of college athletics has dramatically changed since then with Southern Miss and Mississippi State headed in complete opposite directions. Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy with the current state of our program, but the amount of people overly upset about losing last Saturday is mind-boggling. Did people really expect us to win that game? Do they think we should expect to win road games versus an SEC team that recruits 40-50 spots higher than us? That's not rational! This isn't the 1980s. We'll never be that again. Our best hope is to get out of CUSA and build back up to one of the better non-P5 programs, because right now we are nothing more than middle of the pack G5.
