2020 USNWR CUSA Rankings
If I am reading this material accurately (as a MTSU grad my comprehension is questionable 01-wingedeagle). Here are your 04-cheers USNWR Rankings:

17. RICE- (Our only private school-Bell Cow of Academia for CUSA)
166. UAB- (Founded in 1965-66, has a medical School and Bear Bryant, Jr. could not kill them)
218. FIU- (Giant Student Body & close to the beach)
228. UNCC- (Founded in 1948- Major Metro City & growth, growth, growth)
263. ODU- (Well. It is in Virginia and big endowment?)
272. La Tech- ( I got no clue but we like 'em)
281. UNT and FAU are tied. (Both got some Money and lots of Potential and FAU has a beach)
293-381. Marshall, Middle Tennessee, Southern Miss, UTEP, UTSA, & Western Ky.
They are all tied. Each has some unique bragging points. Guess USNWR was trying to be diplomatic or they were too damn lazy to actually rank our bottom 6, accurately.
Thoughts from my colleagues? 05-stirthepot

This is the first year Marshall is a R-2 Research University instead of a regional University.

I think we were like 215 or 230 last year? Not sure but feel like it was a little higher. Don't know if we're getting worse or others getting better.

I wouldn't take it too seriously - might not be much of either. Many schools don't even voluntarily participate, so they only get ranked based on others (Charlotte is like this - it's why there isn't even a picture for our profile). I know it's a principled stand, but I disagree with it. Rankings can fluctuate fairly drastically given variations in reported information, gaming the system, etc., even toward the top. I always found it more useful to think of these in "tiers," tier 1a - 1-25, tier 1b - 26-50, tier 2 - 51-100, tier 3- 101-150, tier 4 - 151-250. Something along those lines. I'm making the numbers up for the tiers, but that's sort of the way I look at it.

ETA: It's also just one methodology, and there's nothing to say other rankings aren't better (or worse) unless you've analyzed all of them.

If he lives anywhere close to his Alma Mater, YES, he considers that very close to the beach.

We were #215 last year and had finally cracked the top 200, at #196~, the year before that. I'm not sure what is going on, but it seems like a troubling trend.

According to Times Higher Edcuation, UAB ranks as the #1 best young university in the U.S. for the 2nd year in a row and #12 in the world (was #10 in 2018). These are universities 50 yrs old and younger.

Does Charlotte's chancellor even bother to fill out the forms for this? I know he didn't used to bother with it.

Sadly, WKU will probably never receive the opportunity to move up due to political opposition from UK and UL. Below are a couple quotes from several years ago regarding WKU's fight for a DPT (Doctorate of Physical Therapy) program.

Quote:In fact, the biggest obstacle Pennington and others faced when getting legislative approval for the program was opposition from other universities - primarily the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville. Officials from those schools argued that another physical therapy program was not warranted in the state. Eventually, a bill was drafted that all universities agreed on.

Quote:“The University of Kentucky has indicated to us that they are not in favor of us offering any more doctoral programs,” Taylor said.

Wow. ODU is closer to the beach than that. For some reason our school has forgot how to market that fact. Which is only our most desirable geographic selling point.

Yes. 215 last year. Looks like our 4 year graduation rate is killing us again. If we could raise that and tighten our acceptance rates slightly we'd move up significantly.

The graduation rate is tough due to the high number of military and military family attendees and overall transient nature of the area.

I think I remember reading that the the year we did break into the top 200 we had responded to the survey or whatever to voluntarily comply with the ranking as someone mentioned earlier. Not sure if that's the case or if we're still doing it or what.

Marshall could have and even should have reached R2 status 10-12 years ago if the School up north and Charleston didn't put up such a fight. Not only has WVU fought Marshall growth tooth and nail, so has the WV Legislature. which of course is filled with WVU grads.

They fought our Med School, biomechanics school, tried to stop us from taking over WV Tech engineering school when they were about to discontinue the program, one WVU grad in the legislature started a petition for the state of WV to stop funding Marshall all together in the mid 2000s that went no where. But those are just a few things they have done in the last 13 years to slow us down. They also tried to stop our Forensic program from starting in the late 90s but Im trying to keep it to the time frame of 10-12 years when Marshall could have realistically reached R2.

About the only school I know they haven't tried to meddle in is the new Aviation School but it wouldn't surprise me if they don't try and put up a roadblock or two even though the program has been given the green light.
