Exclamation Hawaii and San Diego State making statements for PAC 12 invites
It looks like Hawaii and San Diego State are making statements to join the PAC 12.

Week 1 Hawaii beats Arizona 45 to 38

Week 2 Hawaii beats Oregon State 31 to 28 and San Diego State beats UCLA 23 to 14

At the moment, Hawaii has at least 10 games scheduled against the PAC 12 through 2027. San Diego State has at least 15 games scheduled against the PAC 12 through 2028.

It looks like they are the front runners for invites to the PAC 14.

That's not how that works. If all the PAC 12 cared about was football success Boise would've been in years ago.

I don't know if the ability of a G5 school to defeat members of a P5 conference (despite the disparity in resources) is a compelling argument for that conference to promote the G5 school into their ranks.

I would argue that the number of future scheduled games means they are worth a consideration. Plus the alumni interest in those two schools.

If you were a PAC 12 alumni would your road trip to Boise, or San Diego or Hawaii? How would you rate the trips?

In the 2010's it was about cable tv markets. In the 2020's priorities will shift to providing content to actual existing fans, but growing new markets will still be important for future growth.

In that sense I could see Hawaii having expansion potential because the PAC will want to grow the Asia Pacific market by adding Hawaii

RE: Hawaii and San Diego State making statements for PAC 12 invites
If a good season or two was all that was needed to get a magic ticket then Boise and, like, a third of the AAC wouldn't still be stuck in their current conferences. I can't see the PAC ever adding a fifth California team. Hawaii's ceiling is probably a preferred OOC opponent for PAC teams, and you know what? With the Hawaii exception a possible schedule of an FCS, four PAC teams, and the MW slate is actually a pretty great schedule for Hawaii.

Hawaii having a schedule alliance with the pac 12 and mwc instead of being a mwc conference football member could work. Play 4 pac 12 and 6 mwc schools per year, for 10 games annually. Than mwc could invite UTEP for full membership. You could also give BYU the same schedule alliance deal

Hawaii is not going to do anything to burn the MW bridge now that they're the only game in town west of Texas. Trying to get too cute with the scheduling is a great way to put football in an untenable position. With the exception allowing them to play 13 games they can play 4 PAC teams and a full conference schedule anyway.

What a joke. Pac-12 schools schedule MWC schools to home-and-home games as matter of convenience. ALL PAC-12 SCHOOLS PLAY HOME-AND-HOME GAMES WITH MWC SCHOOLS. It does not mean that you want to add them to the Pac-12. These schools would add zero dollars to the Pac-12 TV contracts and that is the only thing that will matter when it comes to any Pac-12 expansion.

I disagree that they would add zero dollars to the Pac-12.

SDSU and Hawai'i each have large alumni bases. Larger than a lot of PAC-12 schools.

San Diego and Hawai'i are also new markets for the PAC-12. They're not the largest markets, but San Diego is larger than Utah. And Hawai'i would make it a true Pacific conference, with more potential interest from the Asian markets that the academically elite PAC schools are eager to tap.

What are they worth to the MWC? The current MWC TV deal is worth $18 million annually. ESPN and Fox are not going to care about these two markets. It is about the money. San Diego is 120 miles from LA. Is that really a "new market?" Do you really think UCLA and USC want San Diego State in the Pac-12? San Diego is a beautiful city and great place to live, but that doesn't mean they belong in the Pac-12. Hawaii belongs in the Big West.

Eager to tap for what? And what Asian markets are we talking about exactly?

Hawaii could add 13 games to Pac inventory
Hous would add 7,
Pac could sell 3rd 22 game package to NBC
22 for Fox, 22 for ESPN & 30 for PacN

RE: Hawaii and San Diego State making statements for PAC 12 invites
San Diego State - enrollment would be in the same range as Colorado, Oregon State, Utah and Washington State; it's endowment would be dead last; it is a top-150 national university, but is in the 501-600 range in both Times/ARWU (would be dead last); SDSU is an affiliate in the PAC for men's soccer, so that counts for something.

Hawaii - enrollment would be second to last in the PAC (ahead of only Stanford); endowment would be second-to-last (assuming it came with SDSU; both programs have nearly $250 million less than the current last place endowed school in the PAC - OSU, $550 million); is a flagship/land grant institution - ARWU/Times = 201-300 (would be at same tier as Utah, higher than Washington State).

Ultimately, I think Hawaii looks much more of a fit on the surface from an institutional standpoint than San Diego State does, but I think they would be a complimentary addition to expansion and not the desired selection for expansion. They would need to be included with someone in order to make it work and for it to make sense IMO. Nobody from the MWC really makes sense from an expansion standpoint (whether by academic, athletic or institutional standards). From the Big 12, Kansas would make a ton of sense, as would - for an athletic extent - Texas and/or Oklahoma. However, everyone else, on their own (much like Hawaii) wouldn't be able to justify expansion by itself.

As I have stated previously, I think Houston should be considered a strong wild-card, long-term, for the PAC. Football and men's basketball improvements noteworthy, Houston has a strong enrollment (would be in range of Arizona, California, UCLA, USC and Washington), strong endowment (would be ahead of Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State, Utah and Washington State), and has academic rankings that would be on-par with the bottom-tier of the conference. It is not AAU, but is part of the URA (like a majority of the PAC). Additionally, Houston would grant the PAC access to Texas and a new time zone. The hurdle for Houston would be involving other schools to come with them (like a Texas).

I don't see the PAC adding anyone in the next decade. If anything, they might actually get some members poached if the reports of dysfunction remain (i.e. Colorado to the B1G, or Arizona/ASU to the Big 12, etc.).

Growing new markets, huh? Well, there is a new D1 school on San Diego coming in 2020 and one that's academically superior.

UC San Diego to the PAC?

It’s nice to dream about but the reality is that the Pac-12 has no interest in expansion and if it did UH would need to double its endowment to be a viable candidate.

More like Arizona and Oregon State are making statements that that they should take their football to the MWC.
