Victory Bell Week!
As coach Fickell said, we took one on the mouth this past weekend against a top 5 team. Time to move forward and see how these guys handle a week after that kind of performance. I'm looking forward to this week's game. Hopefully the guys regroup, get as healthy as possible and retain the bell.

RE: Victory Bell Week!
I remember my playing days... and yes, we had facemasks... after a bad loss all I could think of was getting to that next game to redeem ourselves.

I think the squad will be ready to go. Miami's not a bad team but they'll seem like a breeze after playing an NFL triple-A team.

… that is, if we haven't dropped football by then.

Even though our crowd tends to dominate in Oxford or at PBS, I'm glad this one is in the friendly confines of Nippert. I too expect UC to come out on fire to wipe out the memory of last Saturday.

Is there any update on Warren? I don't recall him playing much in the second half and I'm wondering about his status for Saturday. I think it's a big plus if he's playing, especially against a MAC opponent where our offensive line will create some holes.

Looks like this is Throwback Week. The website is full of old school looking graphics for Saturday's game. Not sure why they would break out the red throwbacks against Miami who is primarily red, but I love the throwbacks so go for it. Didn't think we'd see them until the UCF game. Just right the ship and get back on track. Ding ding.

I expect the game plan to be way more free and easy on both sides of the ball. I’m going to err on the side of thinking that we knew last weekend was Don Quixote charging the proverbial windmill and we kept the powder dry for the next 3 games.

With the trajectories of these programs, this would be an inexplicably horrendous loss on a magnitude not seen for the past 20 years since Minter lost to a FCS Troy squad at home the week before beating Wisconsin.

Miami win at Nippert? “Unlikely” is being very polite.

Yup. Throwbacks should have been used for more visible game on larger network such as UCLA last week or UCF in a few weeks. UC-Miami will be seen by a couple hundred thousand on ESPNU.

I'd throw in the loss to Army in 2004 as well. Army had gone 0-13 the year before. They were 0-4 to start that season. They had won 1 game in 2002. Combined they'd lost 19 straight games and 29 of their last 30. The Bearcats, with multiple NFL players on defense mind you, gave up 48 at points and lost.

Eh...maybe. I like featuring the all blacks at Nippert at night. We had them against UCLA. Hoping for them against UCF.

I am an all black at night Nippert guy myself, I am just saying giving the exposure, those would have been the games to don the throwback uniforms for a national audience.

As to the game, have a feeling the intensity level at practice will be kicked off a notch from last week, especially after Coach Fickell publically acknowledges they weren't prepared for OSU. Will we see more carries from Tavion Thomas? Will the defense backfield actually put on press man coverage instead of playing ten yards off the ball like they did last week? My guess is we'll see the return of the Blackcat defense this week, which spells victory for the home team.

Totally agree with this however that loss was rock bottom for Dantonio's teams. I think they had to lose that game in order to begin the upswing that really lasted until Tub's 2nd year. This roster and this program is still in really good shape right now, despite what happened in Columbus. We aren't 42 points worse than OSU but we aren't 10 points worse than them either. We have been put in our place and we have to scrap to get out. Time to do the same to Miami U. I hope the players feel the same way. I imagine they do.

Exactly. Getting punched in the mouth like that could be good for the team. If the culture is healthy and they have a firm foundation of pride in being a Bearcat, they'll rebound this week. If the culture is unhealthy, they'll struggle.

I agree with the first sentence 100%, but I have no idea what you are talking about in the second one. Army had lost 29 of 30! Dantonio was a good coach here, but he really didn't do anything special. He seems to get a ton of credit (these revisionist days anyway) for assembling all the talent that BK won big with. Somehow I doubt that Tubs will someday get similar credit for assembling much of the talent that Fickell has won with.

Team had no discipline under Minter. Dantonio came in and changed that. Kelley was amazed at the discipline the team had the day he walked in the door. I don't think Dantonio is a world beater coach but his teams played hard and with discipline and he was able to find some pretty good players that weren't very highly ranked. The upswing began under him but BK took them to new heights...ones we haven't seen since. Butch did his best to maintain but I don't think he's that good of a coach. Then there was Tubs. My point is that Dantonio is what we needed when he was hired. A stand up guy that demanded a lot out of his guys. I liked his coaching staff too. That win against #7 ranked Rutgers was domination, whether they deserved their ranking or not. The teams were also ready for bowl games under Dantonio. I don't think that is revisionist history.

I take your point that Dantonio was starting to build a program here as opposed to good teams as vague as that is. Perhaps that's partially why I'm not really a fan of the guy - he left before finishing the job. (Not to mention he tried to take his entire staff with him before "his team"'s bowl game, but I count that as a separate issue against the guy.)

But I'm not sure that we have real tangible evidence that we went from "no discipline" to some sort of uber discipline that "amazed" BK. I don't think there were that many off the field issues under Minter that went away under Dantonio. I do know that he's continued to have quite a few though at MSU. In terms of on the field, I similarly don't recall great jumps in avoiding penalties and greatly improved turnover ratios if those could be considered signs of discipline. When it comes to wins and losses, he had one notable great win and one brutal embarrassing loss as discussed above and mostly a bunch of up and down so-so play otherwise. Pretty much what we had under Minter. Sure Dantonio had a somewhat more difficult schedule, but he also had corresponding recruiting advantages that Minter didn't.

Maybe we're saying closer to the same thing than it may seem, I dunno. But I do clearly recall a lot of dissatisfaction with Dantonio and his style all the way into his final season here that seems to have been erased since then.

RE: Victory Bell Week!
You are not mistaken.

When he took the MSU job you'd have thought Mick had just headed off to UCLA. Over time, that style of offensive play grated on a lot of UC fans. It was like we gave up and conceded several games before the opening kickoff of the season. I know I found it to be overly cautious and boring as heck at times.

Was the one thing a few people who were not sold on the Fickel hire at the start feared - a return to the Don Treadwell days of offense.
