It seems like logos are always a popular topic here. I just saw this Thresher story talking about how Rice is re-branding its university shield logo a bit. The old (on left) and new variation (on right) are below. The story talks about a few other logo/font changes as well throughout the campus.

Most design work is done in tools like InDesign that produce a vector format. That is, they have individual lines, circles, curves, etc. When you rasterize it turns everything into pixels, like a photo. Less fidelity when you zoom or change something.

(Wife is a graphic designer. This is what I have surmised over the years. I may be off or over-simplifying, your mileage may vary.)

It's nice

I like it. I really like our athletic 3-panel logo too, with the old English R, the state of texas, and (shrug) Adidas

Pro: the owls look better. By contrast, those old owls look positively amateurish.

Con: No gray (at least in this picture)

I think the old (left image) owls look better ... especially on the variety of pins that Rice has distributed. The new ones look more cartoonish to me.

And I agree on the missing gray.
