Ever wonder if UT regrets the day he got away? That seems to be about the time their slide got even steeper. They are in disarray in Knoxville. Memphis, without doubt, is the best football program in the state.

UT’s problems are far bigger than a disgruntled transfer.

The problem with UT is there isn’t enough talent in the state to consistently win... that coupled with the fact that the border states they used to rely upon now have 2 of the top coaches (Dabo Swinney and Kirby Smart) in the country leading their respective programs. UT can’t win if they can’t pluck top talent out of South Carolina and Georgia.

The problem with Tennessee is that their program must compete with genuine blue blood $3€ teams for players while playing in a Hobo Hillbilly Haven

RE: Riley Ferguson
So i read this sometime ago... and it speaks to how delusional UT fans are. First understand that the largest number of players on any college team come from in-state; this maybe the family 'drive to see me play' affect or it could be the impact of relatives and friends who also go there. But the jist is the largest number of players on any college team come from the immediate area around the school. So Tenn in this regard has 3 challenges;
1. Tenn actually has very poor high school football
2. Further thanks to racial tensions in 1875 the Tenn landgrant school isn't in the middle of the state which reduces and skews UT's recruiting footprint
3. And maybe this is the same as 2 but Tenn is very close to other LandGrant schools (unlike say Arky) and is in competition for players in better HS football states (Alabama, Georgia)

So when UT was last good... under Fulmur; they actually had to recruit nationally. And while Phil was a bad in game coach, he was a great recruiter and tireless salesman (like Majors before him) and worked to make UT a national brand. Killing Phil killed that effort. Hiring coaches that where first good X's and O's guys shows how poorly the admin in Knoxville understands their strategic shortcomings. The Tenn coach had better be able to sell icewater to eskimo's cause he's gonna have to convince a football player in the Nooga that his career is better in Knoxville than schools only 2 hours away from him. And a great player in Counce is closer to those Schools than Knoxville...

Knoxville being good in football is hard. And as we rise and present a valid option it's just gonna get worse.

Agree, i Just saved a post in this thread that agree's with this. I used more words, this is a much better take.

Wish the legislature would begin to recognize that our university is more efficient with less than half the budget than UTK & begin to shift revenue to Memphis where it is more effectively used.

Completely agree. I think you have to acknowledge you have a state that is diff than all the other states and you have to adjust your fund accordingly. The length of the state makes it impossible for a university in one corner to represent the whole state. So much better to bolstered the UofM (UT Medical becomes UM Medical for example)... and let them both larger regional impact. Nothing in Knoxville is going to struggle to make a national impact and is never going to be a global destination (school of dead bodies...). Instead secede the national impact to Vandy; split the funds between Knox and Memphis and make a state that is more well rounded than the imbalance we have now.

Its as close for a Memphian to go to LSU than it is to go to Knoxville and the Delta culture in Baton Rouge is much more similar to Memphis than the Appalachian culture of Knoxville. The best recruit in the city last year is in Baton Rouge this year.

UT is a tough gig.

UT used to go heavy into North Carolina, Virginia and Kentucky too. Now, there are schools there that are better than they are. They have spiraled down so far they can't climb out. They'll get busted for cheating soon ... Trying to buy their way back. Just like Ole Miss and Miss State.

In the past, Memphis did not have as much recruiting success in Memphis and Nashville as it does now. That has got to be a problem for Tennessee. Here in Texas...UT is the Longhorns. Whenever I am in Memphis and someone says they are a UT fan....I say "Me too, my son in law played football for the Longhorns. When did you go there?"

The problem with UT is they’ve made a series of really bad hires, let the Haslams muck around with the program and let Fulmer backstab his way into the AD.

As far as I’m concerned, the way Fulmer has wormed his way back in at UT gives those hillbilly cousin-kissers just what they deserve. The further they fall and the more it happens under fat Phil the happier I am.

I cannot imagine any scenario in which they offer a Memphis coach their job, effectively admitting Memphis is a better program with a better coach... 02-13-banana

That certainly doesn't hold up. That means any time any team hires a new coach they are admitting that the program they hired the coach from is a better program?... no I don't think so. Big time programs hire coaches all the time. The new coaches have to come from somewhere, and they won't be hiring Saban from Alabama or Debo from Clemson.

Derek Dooley was a bad hire but Butch Jones was a pretty good hire. The problem is with fan expectations. Is it a better job than Florida... no. Is it a better job than Georgia... no. Is it a better job than South Carolina... it’s debatable. Quite frankly, UT is the 3rd or 4th place job in the eastern division of the conference... which is where Butch Jones ended up in most years.

Good luck Jeremy Pruitt.

I agree with your statement in general. However, my statement is specific to UTK and Memphis. UTK is not going to hire a Memphis football coach under any circumstances because in their eyes it is admitting we have a better team and coach and they will never acknowledge that in any way shape or form (including but not limited to the hiring of our head coach).

And if the coach you are hiring isn't better than the one you're replacing, what are you doing? (Obvious exception for backfilling a position that was poached by a better school.)

I don't know that Butch Jones was a good hire. He was sensible on paper, I guess and was the best hire of the four since Fulmer. He also did manage to get them to couple of 9 win seasons, which as you said is about where they belong most years. But he was a really bad fit with the Tennessee program and didn't really have the temperament to deal with scrutiny he got in Knoxville and it just seems like everyone involved should have seen that coming.

The series has typically been one of runs, granted that Alabama has the overall series edge, 56–38–7 (55.4%-37.6%-6.9%).

Prior to the Tide rolling off the past 12, the series was 44-38-7 (49.4%-42.7%-7.9%).

Third Saturday in October

Will Alabama eventually fall on hard times or will they remain a Top 5 team for the rest of eternity? Odds are they'll fall on hard times again, like they have a few times in the past.

http://michigan-football.com/ncaa/f/alabama.htm

As I review their history it seems like Alabama has a seasons where they vacate games due to cheating.
