RE: Memphis vs. Alabama?
The only road games that Bama plays are conference games. Other than the occasional neutral site games they do not go on the road other than required games. So when Saben says that, what he means is we can't get any P5 teams to agree to only play in Tuscaloosa.

Would be a great 2 for 1 if you can get it. The Bulls are also getting $1M for the extra return game.

Agreed...

I think Arkansas is a better 2 for 1...

We get 2-3 wins out of the series AND a check. Cant really beat that.

UAlabama would likely beat us so thoroughly we likely wouldn't be taken seriously the rest of the season...Kind of like Cincy when they got murdered by OSU. If Cincy doesn't lose another game they still won't be respected

I don't think so. Alabama tends to play with their food A LOT.

They routinely beat SEC teams by more points in a given season than they do that season's FCS opponent.

Alabama would beat us something mundane like 44.10 and we would collect the check and go home.

Or... Our offense has a good day, and we put up about 40 points, and they beat us in a shoot-out.

I just watched the video... man, what a jack-ass. 07-coffee3

Because NM State is in such a powerhouse league

I think Saban's point was that he didn't want to play them either. Just P5 schools only.

Well that's not going to happen, so we might as well go play them & get $1.5M check too.

I agree. Worst case it would be a quality loss.

Makes no sense when the goal for this program is to get the Access Bowl slot.

Beating USA helps achieve that outcome a lot better than losing to Bama.

Period. Bottom line.

We can either win the games in front of us and go to the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Day or hang our head high after losing to Bama while enjoying the Military Bowl in the middle of December.

I know which one I'd prefer.

Agreed...

Take the Million Dollar check and the prime opponent at the end of the year...

Granted we have to earn it.

I'm not so sure I agree. I think a loss to Alabama would not be any worse than a win against USA when the "higher-ups" constantly harp on strength of schedule for non-P5 schools. A couple of 2019 rankings:

Sagarin (includes FCS)
Alabama - #1
USA - #166

ESPN FPI
Alabama - #1
USA - #121

I had to go back to 2014 (the first of the NY6) to find a comparable scenario. That year Boise State made it from the G5. They finished the regular season 11-2. Marshall finished the regular season that year 12-1. Heck there were four 8-4 teams that made the final rankings over Marshall.

Obviously this is all hypothetical. I used 2014 as an example because if we are switching out USA for Alabama, then I have a tough time seeing a 12-1 Tigers team that lost to Alabama being worse off than a 13-0 Tigers team that beat USA. In 2014 the team with the stronger schedule made it despite having a worse record than the other team. So I could see that 12-1 Tiger team beating out an undefeated from another G5 with a weaker schedule. I think it would be possible to make money both from playing Alabama and from the NY6 bowl barring other losses.

Marshall was never going to get it because they are in CUSA and can't even get a decent in-conference win.

If it came down to Memphis going 12-1 w/ a loss to Bama or an undefeated Marshall, Memphis gets the nod.

But, if it's a 13-0 Memphis with a win vs. USA and a 12-1 Boise with a loss to Washington, then Memphis likely gets the nod.

You realize marriage between 1st cousins is LEGAL in Tennessee, right?

The joke doesn't play well when our state permits it, but Virginia doesn't allow it.
