Does Utah have the nation's best defensive line?

It'll be rocking at Rice-Eccles. So pumped for this SEASON OPENER.

GO NIU!

Beat Utah.

Thank you NorthCoast. This is from Phil Steele's listing of the best defensive lines:

1. Utah Utes
The Utes continue to produce elite defensive lines, as this position is the primary recruiting emphasis here. This season is no different, as all four starters return after allowing just 100 yards per game on the ground (No. 5 in FBS) while collecting 37 sacks. Defensive end Bradlee Anae (eight sacks in 2018) and defensive tackles Leki Fotu and John Penisini are listed as either first or second on my All-Pac-12 preseason team, with each player likely having a future in the NFL.

NIU will have to be creative to get points in that game I fear. I could see a scenario where halftime score is like 13-3 Utes in a competitive game, but then much like Iowa last year Huskies get just railroaded in 2nd half for something like a 45-6 outcome

Considering all three teams played each other last year in competitive games, I think it's a good barometer as to what the NIU vs Utah line may look like.

I expect something similar to the BYU line but with Utah being at home, and depending on how tha Utah/BYU game goes, I expect NIU to be 6.5 - 7.5pt underdogs.

Thanks for the info NC but I disagree and expect us to at least 10 point dawgs vs the Utes.

I am interested to see what the spread will be vs ISU. I’m drinking the Hammock Kool Aid and may be all over that one.

Utah is T15-20.

They win week one, it's 13/14.

Amen to that! There will be plenty of beer before the game! Any Huskie tailgating going on at Utah?

Good to schedule the D2 exhibition to work out the kinks before FBS football!

I was pretty much dismissive of Illinois State also, but I have to concede it does appear they have a team more than capable of beating NIU in the opener. Illinois State coming to NIU appears to be statistically the same as WMU coming to Dekalb this season.

Nah they suck.

Thanks randyfens but I’m a little uncomfortable that you felt this was important to post here....

I didn't get the correlation until I read the bottom part of the link.04-jawdrop

Utah....Raising the alcohol level in our beer 25% and our merryin' age to 16. Easier to get drunk, get your driver's license and do you wedding vows on the same day.

Must have been one interesting legislative session.

I couldn’t believe either the Beer or the “consent age” stories. It’s 2019 for gawdz sake.

Surprising poll results, wonder why Vandy is so much more anticipated? I am guessing it has to do with the host city? I chose Nebraska. Utah is too good for that to be a competitive game, Vanderbilt is really solid but a win vs Vandy would soon be forgotten much like BYU. Nebraska probably is too good to be competitive also, but at least some chance maybe? Prime time, national TV for Nebraska with possibly Brando on the call.

I chose Nebraska as well. They're expected to make a big jump under Scott Frost -- Phil Steele has them favorites in B1G West -- and yeah it'll be primetime on FS1. Plus they'll be out for revenge.

Now if you're talking fan experience, then it'd be Nashville/Vanderbilt. But Vandy is expected to be at or near the bottom of the SEC. But beating an SEC school is cool in itself.

Pac-12 Coaches Talk Anonymously About Conference Foes for 2019
https://athlonsports.com/college-footbal...s-2019?amp

Quote:Utah

"The most physical and demanding team in that division (Pac-12 South). They came together really well last season and really punished a lot of teams who weren't ready to get nasty."

"They always have a great defense; they probably always will with Kyle (Whittingham), but now they have a really athletic quarterback who can expand what we've seen from them the last few years."

"They're the most physical football team in the league, neck and neck with Stanford."

"You get the impression that they want to lean on that defensive physicality with the run game and make that the standard, so it was sort of a strange mix to see how the old offensive coordinator (Troy Taylor) would game plan. There's familiarity with Andy Ludwig, so that makes a ton of sense, and he was in a similar situation at Vanderbilt trying to fit an offense around a defense."

"I think they'll slow it down even more on offense. Old-school stuff. Tyler Huntley is a great threat with his legs, but I think they'll limit his exposure there, because they're nowhere near as dynamic when he's injured."

"The offensive line loses some guys, and they graduated some linebackers, but neither one of those areas would really bother you, they're good at developing depth for both of those."

"They always have good special teams too, really good at setting field position."

"Kyle Whittingham is a really underappreciated coach."

"I don’t think they won the South just because a lot of other teams were down or starting over, I think they won the South because they play really, mean, really disciplined football and they’ve tailored a team around going to play in a tough place in Salt Lake."

"This is their best opportunity to maximize their exposure and go win in some key areas in recruiting. They’re the favorite to win the South again, at least entering the season. What they need to do is find that last extra level in bringing some top flight guys in and they could really redefine the program."
