Oh be quiet. The reason most people came to this school my record setting enrollment year was the basketball team. This school wouldn't even be known by the wider population if it wasn't on TV sometimes. I'm from Michigan and northern Ohio and we literally didn't hear about UC outside of sports. I originally came to be a walk on for football. You have an agenda to push because you are bias but before you say words recognize the effects of advertisement in any form. Stop being annoying

Ummm...no....as much as I value MBB at UC, it's the quality of certain programs at UC that pulls the enrollments...DAAP, Engineering, the Medical School are just a few examples...all top notch nationally. If those programs were junk, then enrollments would drop like a rock.

No it wouldn't. People going into the education field could care less about what's happening in those other schools. Hell I thought it was cool but it wasn't what drove me to attend the school. Hell I've never been in the DAAP building or the Medical school. Only people who care about those schools are people who are going into those schools. People come for the college experience. Stop with your nonsense; you sound ridiculous. I'm coming from the student perspective you sound like a cry baby instructor hoping it's the programs the bring the students and not the recreational activities.

Let me guess...Other than participating athletes, the kids who go to UC because they're more impressed with its sports or with the promise of its college experience rather than with its academics are the ones who flunk out at the end of their first year, never to return.

"Yeah man, I've been accepted into some other schools, but I'm going to UC because they have decent sports programs."

"Oh, have you received an athletic scholarship?"

"No, but I really like UC's long string of one-and-outs in the NCAA tourney. I dig the football uniforms, too. Being close to the action is all part of the college experience."

"So, what are you going to major in?"

"I don't know yet. But it doesn't matter I long as I get to attend some games and enjoy some nachos."

I think he is making a pretty good point. The revenue sports are often the first impression of UC for many students- especially for those who come from outside Greater Cincinnati. In turn, they then check out the outstanding academic programs, come see our campus and decide to come here. Bottom line you need all 3.

I went to UC because the campus was cool and I did not want to go to OSU. I remember the school had a good team in the late 90's but had no idea what they did after that... I went to 1 basketball game while in school and never missed a football game.

I could have cared less about daap, or the engineering school, and I still could care less about them. I did not fail out.

I'm with you here...Unruly sounds....let me put it politely...uninformed. We can start by counting the number of bodies enrolled in those programs--it's pretty massive...they care, and that student population is huge.

We could follow up with the fact that huge number of foreign students are drawn to those programs because of their academic quality and the fact that they contribute to job opportunities that provide significant $$$. Most of these students are not enthralled with athletics.

Hopefully Unruly understands that..."The more you learn...the more you earn." It rhymes, so maybe that'll stick.

If the only thing driving a student to a college were the extra-curriculars, that student is likely going to end up at a job where they have to wear a name tag and pull minimum wage.

If you think that's cool...fine...but if you want to support a family and own a home...you might want to think again.

DAAP, Engineering, and the Medical School have what 2,000 students between them? Let's be honest, the bulk of the students are in A&S and Business and a lot of them came to UC because it is a big name school.

A lot of kids have no idea what they want to do or where they are going to school when they are 16 years old. They apply to the schools that their friends went to or they've been fans of the sports teams. I applied to UC because my parents had basketball tickets.

Well I didn't drop out and yes I did graduate also in the same breath I came to UC to play football. Unfortunately, life didn't work out for me but I was able to make a decent living. If you asked me or half the people I met coming into college we couldn't tell you the rankings of UC's academic programs. If UC do away with either football or basketball enrollment WILL dwindle. DAAP, CCM, Medical School, Engineering, Criminal Justice, Law School, and to a lesser extent business school has always been very good programs but it is not a coincidence UC enrollment started to skyrocket once the football team started doing better despite UC going through insane construction and the Basketball Team being left for dead by old Zimpher.

The Nursing School is its own department and not affiliated with A&S. To your other point, most people don't go to graduate school where they went to undergrad in part because most grad programs want out of state students to help their profit margins. So the A&S department at UC is most likely not a bigger feeder into those programs than "the field."

Yes...but the nursing students take A&S courses (one of which I teach)...so I don't know if that counts in their enrollment numbers..but again, the logic still holds...if the A&S courses were crap and none of the students coming out of those programs could pursue advanced degrees, then the enrollment in those programs would plummet.

Walked around that building last week. Impressive, especially coming downhill on Main St. from the TUC. The 3 sisters redo and that building really change the look of that end of UC. Was just a big parking lot back in my day 68-72!
