The problem with football is the only thing more embarrassing than the product on the field is the way the program is managed. Tell me, what has changed about the typical game day experience since Joel took over? Nothing. We are playing these big money games, but nothing has changed. If we are making $5m, shouldn't there be improvements? Wins? Anything?

I think football is not only worth having. In fact, I think it deserves much more than it has received under Joel Nielsen's watch.

Blame the athletic director if he deserves blame.

The football team's record after nine years and now two games of the 2019 season is a combined 38-73. That's a winning percentage of .342.

In the previous nine years under Laing Kennedy, it was 38-67. A .362 winning percentage.

I expect a little more from an AD who is being paid such an exorbitant salary. He made $436,560 in 2018. The next highest-paid AD in the Mid-American Conference made $299,000.

It's not like the guy has been successful in raising money to make football better. Or men's basketball (which is also down under Nielsen).

Nielsen's quote in USA Today a few weeks ago regarding the 3 guarantee games said quite a bit.

"The guaranteed money is a lot of money, obviously, for one game," Nielsen said. "I would hope we could find other opportunities to make that money up, whether it’s ticket sales or donations or external support. I think long term you’d hope that’d be the case, but it’s something right now that we’re just taking day-by-day and see how it plays out.”

Yeah. "I would hope." What's the old saying? Wish in one hand...

He hopes long term that would be the case? He's had a decade. He's taking it day by day and seeing how it plays out? Seriously? We are accepting this? It's utterly ridiculous.

I couldn't agree more. The one thing that has actually changed is that the football program actually has a worse record in Nielsen's nine years than in the previous nine. That's pretty shocking when you consider one of those years was the 2012 team.

RE: Week 2 - Kennesaw State at KSU
I have been looking at this site for years, but this is my first post.
I’m happy the team won. Being out of state, I obviously don’t get any coverage of the team, and this site should be the best place to read about everything Kent State football, but lately it just makes me depressed with all the negativity. As a former player, those guys are giving their all on the field regardless of the schedule.
I was hanging on Ty’s every word on the broadcast and was ecstatic they won. Made my day!
The better team is always the team that finds a way to win, and yesterday the Golden Flashes were the better team. Go Kent!

Bingo.

How many times have we invented ways to lose? These guys deserve all the credit for finding a way to win - especially given the circumstances.

I actually have a theory on this that's probably at least 70% BS, but here it goes. The fireworks force people in the area to notice the game is going on. Making the pregame fireworks the most important because it could remind some people to come on over. I think it was last year during a weekday game where we were scoring alot people on my wife's FB were posting they kept hearing distant explosions out in the Ellet area and couldn't figure out what it was. It turned out to be from the KSU game.
Also they hurt the experience of locals who decide to watch on ESPN 3 instead of going because you know when a score happens before you see it. Trying to make it more annoying to watch the free way isn't a bad thing I guess? But chances are none of this is actually a factor and it's just fireworks are loud and cool. People love fireworks.

RE: Week 2 - Kennesaw State at KSU
I too would like to get back on the topic of football and Woody Barrett. I have to admit, I am a Dustin Crum fan (I'm a fan of Woody too) but I was shocked that he started, and not only that, played almost the entire game (and played quite well).

I believe he was only out for the 3 goal line plays early in the game. This was eyebrow raising in itself - he led the team down to the goal line and then we replace him by Barrett. Why was that?

Then he goes back in for the rest of the game.

Does anyone have an explanation?

Thanks.

No explanation for Barrett's short appearance, but this from the RC regarding Crum:

“There’s not a kid in our program that really embodies the daily improvement that we’re looking for more than Crum,” said Lewis. “He put his nose to the grindstone, and when the opportunity came he seized it. I’m proud of him, and proud of the way Woody’s handled everything as well.”

“Crum was 100 percent in training camp in all the situations that we created — end of half, end of game,” said Lewis. “We say all the time practice repetition is game reality. He went out and executed.”

Actually attended the game my thoughts might repeat what as already been posted. Past years we would have given up when opposition takes the lead with 1.40 left. Defense held against a quick team that was cut blocking well beyond the allowed 5 yards down field.
Attended with a friend that is on the academic staff and her comments were pretty interesting I thought. Regarding the scheduling and the AD comments concerning fund raising. He has one concern meeting the target numbers for fund raising. The easiest way schedule money games because the alternative ways would mean that the AD would have the personality to solicit funds from donors. Increase ticket sales, the money from the big payout does not go to football to enhance their facilities , assist in performance and recruiting.
Her opinion on AD treating females poorly, he treats everyone including males in a rude manner because he has the support of the administration.

The Barrett Crum thing is very odd to me. Lewis named Barrett the starter out of camp and called him "our guy" after the Arizona St game. Then Crum plays week 2. I personally like both of them but this kind of flip flopping almost never turns out well.

I'll add if Crum is truly the starting QB and goes on to have a good year how bad will it look that we wasted a chance to redshirt him last season by using him as the holder on FGs... In a 2 win season?

RE: Week 2 - Kennesaw State at KSU
I have three points to make.

1. The referees are not anti Kent State although we see comments along those lines every game. I guess that’s just typical fan reaction.

2. Unless the TV or radio media dictated the field hockey teams had to leave early we should have let them play. It’s not worth the trouble they will cause. The uproar is kind of silly but that’s the world today. I’m as big a female sports fan as their is but even I realize most men (and women for that matter)could care less. I’ll apologize ahead of time to the fanatics.

3. I don’t particular like Nielsen but I’m a little tired of the he hates women line. He doesn’t seem to make anyone too happy. Why should somebody who treats people poorly treat women well. Makes no sense to me. If your a jerk of a boss you usually don’t select your targets. You treat them all equally bad. Until his bosses or the media start asking questions there will be no change. No reason for him to change.

One other comment on Barrett vs. Crum. This is 100% speculation on my part but I wonder if Carrigian being out is playing a factor. Barrett seems like the better passer while Crum seems like the better runner. I wonder if being down one of our top receivers makes the coaches feel the better running option gives us the best chance to win.

Curious as well.... thinking back to 2012, Spencer Keith was a well schooled Senior, that managed games well, didn’t make mistakes, and put the ball in the hands of playmakers. He was smart, passionate, and purposed. I see that in Crum, which makes me think the staff thinks they can win with this team, considering defensive talent.

I could certainly be wrong, but maybe Crum is the right fit, this particular year??

Could be that Crum just beat Barrett out. Crum has looked good in practice, and he answered the bell at Ariz. St. when it looked like Barrett was not ready. A sure way for a coach to lose a team is to not honor who plays better and practices better. I do not know this, but it is obvious that coach has made some decisions. The players know who should be playing.

I agree GFlash68. Unless Barrett had some minor injury we don't know about or committed some minor team infraction we don't know about, the simplest explanation is that Crum just earned it. And, not playing guys who earn playing time IS bad for morale.

Wait! I thought we were getting 20,000 to football games. It was a simple solution to not fire off the fireworks. Instead its another bad look for Joel and KSU.

Name a dept that hurts our reputation more than the AD?

Two lawsuits by two different schools, a possbile Title IX violation. This could be it for the highest paid AD in the MAC.

Finally, did anyone see the fireworks? Who set those bottle rockets off?

Exactly right! It's tomorrow, and it's not over.

This is why an athletic director like Joel Nielsen is dangerous. He thinks he knows more than anyone else and doesn't take or even look for the advice of the experts around him.

Any athletic communications director would have been able to recognize the potential PR crisis and offer a suggestion that would have fixed the problem before it started.

Once there is a PR crisis, Nielsen has no idea how to handle it, and he has burned every bridge and failed to build up enough good will to where anyone potential influencers will give him the benefit of the doubt.

That's not good for the football program, the field hockey program, or any program.

I can't begin to tell you the number of big-money donors I've been told about from KSU coaches past and present who will not give to Kent State until Nielsen is gone. President Warren didn't seem to care about it. Maybe the donors and the bad press will inspire the new president to take a stand.

Nothing would be better for Kent State Football! Or any Kent State sport.
