The ODU Alumni Association Tailgate at Dietrick Lawn in Blacksburg has been cancelled.

Quote:Based on National Weather Service forecasts indicating Hurricane Dorian will affect the Hampton Roads region later this week, University offices will be closed Friday, September 6. The ODU Alumni Association tailgate at Virginia Tech has been canceled. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Why is a tailgate in Blacksburg being canceled because of the hurricane? Just curious.....

Good question. People from the alumni office choosing to stay home and thus, can't help with tailgate? No clue

Probably has something to do with all the background prep including tents and supplies having to be organized and packed up when the university is closed. That place is so remote that everything would have to happen on Friday, including the drive over there.

Fair enough. I know the team left this afternoon, not sure why they couldn't get the tailgate stuff prepped to leave early since we've known about this storm for a week.

Agree that the preparation in Norfolk are likely an issue. People need to take care of the home front first.

Correct. I will add all our Alumni Association personnel are very dedicated people. Believe me when I say that if they could have made it possible they would have. Don't forget all the staff have families and many would have to traveled either last night and today to make this happen. It is not worth impacting their safety. Honestly...All the derogatory posts are uncalled for when these people work so hard to make our Alumni gatherings so wonderful.

Totally agree! Our Alumni Association staff care and put in an enormous amount of hours.

Its a shame people are criticizing an alumni tailgate being cancelled when you consider the people putting it on are staying with their families to assist during a hurricane.

The people in Alumni Relations LOVE to put on these kind of events. Any chance to gather alumni for a big game, a fundraiser, or otherwise is the highlight of all that they are paid to do for ODU.

That said, they cancelled this because a Cat 5 was coming up the coast. I'm just glad the thing didn't stay as strong. We might have been facing a reality that ECU football had to face just 12 months ago.
