A5 Conference Comparison 2019 - November 3 - Big 12 remains #1
Two qualifying results - the ACC takes another loss as VT loses a squeaker to Notre Dame, and the SEC picks up a weird point via Tennessee's win over UAB, which qualifies under rule 5B, as UAB was in the Coaches "others receiving votes" list. The SEC win rate rises to .413 from .386, while the ACC win rate drops to .286 from .300.

Cumulative Rankings for November 3, 2019:

Code:
CONFERENCE               WINS                     LOSSES                  SEASON RECORD

1) B12                                                                           7 - 7  (.500)

2) B1G                                                                            8.5 - 9.5 (.472)

3) SEC                           T                                                9.5 - 13.5  (.413)

4) PAC                                                                            7 - 13.5 (.341)

5) ACC                                                   VT                         6-15 (.286)

@ 2 win credit for "super win" (see Method)

* 1.5 win credit for "quality win"

# 1.5 loss credit for "bad loss"

& 2 loss credit for "awful loss"

METHOD

1) Only OOC games count.

2) Notre Dame is always regarded as a A5 opponent, including for ACC teams. BYU, Army and other FBS independents are regarded as G5 opponents excepted as noted below.

3) All references to "rankings" are to at the time the game was played.

4) How losses are assessed:

a) A conference is docked 1 loss for losing to any A5 opponent.

b) A conference is docked 1 loss for losing to any FCS or G5 opponent that is ranked in the Coaches and AP poll, including "others receiving votes".

c) A conference is docked 1.5 losses for losing to any unranked G5 opponent. This is a penalty for a "bad loss".

d) A conference is docked 2 losses for losing to any unranked FCS opponent, a penalty for an "awful loss".

5) How wins are earned:

a) A conference is credited with 1 win for any win against an unranked A5 opponent.

b) A conference gets credit for 1 win against an FCS or G5 opponent if the FCS or G5 opponent is ranked in the "others receiving votes" of the AP or Coaches polls.

c) A conference earns 1.5 wins for beating any team ranked between 11-25 in the AP or Coaches top 25. This is a bonus for a "quality win".

d) A conference earns 2 wins if the win is against any team ranked in the top 10 in either poll. This is a bonus for a "super" win.

6) Wins against unranked FCS or G5 earn no credit.

7) For bowl season, the following modifications apply:

- Rankings of bowl game opponents are based on CFP rankings only, save for rules that refer to "others receiving votes" above. For bowl games pitting A5 vs G5, all win and loss credit is earned according to rules 4b-c and 5c-d and 6 above, with CFP substituted for AP/Coaches. So for example, beating a CFP unranked G5 team still earns no credit for the A5 conference, but losing to an unranked G5 in a bowl game does mean it suffers the "bad" loss penalty. But, if the G5 bowl opponent is ranked in the "others receiving votes" of either the AP or Coaches poll, the P5 conference would get credit for 1 win (if they win the bowl game) or just 1 loss (if they lose the bowl game).

ACC should get an extra loss. The UNC/Wake Forest game was an OOC game and so thus the loss should count against the ACC.

Well then they should get an extra win as well, right, since Wake Forest is an ACC team too.

That's why I don't count any conference games. Alabama beats South Carolina, the SEC gets a win, and a loss, it washes out and has no bearing on how the SEC compares to other conferences.

So I don't get into the shenanigans of WF vs UNC being OOC. IMO, that is silly, they are both ACC schools.

Can you expand it to all leagues?

I couldn't as it is currently formulated, because the way wins and losses are parceled out is peculiar to a A5 perspective. E.g., it would make no sense for an AAC team to suffer a 1.5 loss penalty for losing to a team from another G5 conference or vice-versa.

But maybe we could do a G5 Conference Comparison, with bonuses for wins vs A5 schools and penalties for losses to FCS schools.

By my system, most of those wins were "junk wins" that don't count because they came over unranked G5.

The only games that counted for the ACC were the wins by Pitt and BC over UCF and Rutgers, and the loss by UNC to App State.

it would be great to see these ratings as a dynamic thing, where if you beat a team in week 2, and they're unranked then, but then get into the top 25, you get credit for them... Because that's how teams/conferences are viewed, not just where you were when you played.

This is all fine and dandy, but I don't buy that the Big 12 is the best at all. There's 3-4 teams in the SEC that would run the table in that conference, maybe 1-2 more.

Possibly. But my method, like most, evaluated a conference top to bottom. It's not a comparison of each conference's best four teams or somesuch.

With how well the AAC conference is this year.... . I wonder where they would rank if you changed the parameters to treat them as a P6 and adjust the formulas.

Its about the overall strength of the conference, not the teams at the top. Massey Composite agrees with quo. Big 12 has an average rating of around 40. SEC, Big 10 and Pac 12 are all about 46-47. ACC is around 54.

The ooc scheduling timing is quite different with the ACC and SEC. ACC has 12 ooc games remaining. SEC has 14. All the other conferences (not counting indies) have a combined 13. CUSA has 5 and the rest have 0 to 3. MAC and Big 12 have been done for several weeks. Pac 12 and Big 10 just have 1.

Big 10 came close of losing points as they beat Liberty by 10. It was tied 21-21 at the half.

The American has 5 teams total receiving votes in both polls, 3 teams in the top 25 in both polls. Obviously, this success is on the verge of being sustained.

It would be interesting to see where we fall in comparison.
