Illinois State Game Thoughts
I finally got a chance to watch the video after seeing the game in person. Here are a few observations:

-I'm even more impressed with Bowers after watching the tape. Great pocket awareness, great field awareness, great accuracy, great decision making. He did throw that one through the safety's hands in the end zone but overall he was fantastic. It's exciting to think where he can take this team once they've settled in.

-I'm even less impressed with the offensive line after watching the tape. Hoo boy, they have some work to do. Not only were they physically dominated at times, there were also several plays where confusion led to no one being blocked. Two examples:

10:45 of the third quarter, fourth and one at the north end. Perez and Veloz slant, Olson pulls, no one blocks the nose tackle who destroys Harbison for a loss.

2:54 of the fourth quarter, third and five, pretty much no one on the defensive line gets blocked. Olson and Patton end up on the ground in the backfield after blocking no one.

There was also a sack where the ISU D end didn't get touched and numerous plays where the edge wasn't sealed. The line really needs to figure it out or it's going to be ugly in Salt Lake City.

-I feel better about our pass rush after watching the tape. They need to learn how to get some sacks but they did pressure the QB into hurrying his throws on numerous occasions.

-I feel better about our corners after watching the tape. Aitken did a heck of a job for a true freshman. He got beat once or twice but has everything you want in a corner. And McKie is going to be a star. Add Haney and Walker and you have an explosive group for the next few seasons.

-What a concept to use tight ends in the passing game! Five, count em, tight ends got used in the game. It's great to see those guys getting used, especially since the wideouts are a work in progress overall.

-Folks were talking about dropped passes but I only noticed two, a swing pass to Nettles and of course the one to Tears. Bowers is so accurate I don't think drops will be a big issue.

-Our D tackles and linebackers are real good. Like real good.

-Great energy in the crowd and as others have mentioned there had to be at least 18,000 in the house.

-ISU has a really good team. Give them props for making the game a slugfest. I love the games against in-state FCS teams because they always treat the games like the Super Bowl and bring great energy.

-I watched some of the Utah-BYU game and Utah really put the hammer down in the second half. They are a terrific team and it's easy to see why they are getting picked by many to win the PAC12. I'm headed to Salt Lake City but honestly my hopes are for improvement and everyone staying healthy.

I don't care what the worthless athletic office reported, there's simply no way that was accurate. Anyone can compare the pictures at kickoff or simply watch a game replay and see when then camera pans over the crowd, Huskie Stadium was rocking AT A MINIMUM 85% full. That's about 18-19k, and that's still being conservative

I would take a guess it was somewhere between 16-18. NIU does have the tarp at the top of the east side which takes away some of that capacity. The west side always probably looks a little more filled than it really is because of the color changes with the benchbacks.

The most noticeable difference between Childers and Bowers was Bowers’ footwork under pressure. Last year it felt like anytime Childers had pressure he didn’t know what to do and just took a sack. To watch Bowers slide, step up, and reset his feet was night and day.

The tarp area attendance was made up in Touchdown Village which is not taken into account for stadium capacity I do not believe

There weren’t THAT many people in the touchdown village. A couple hundred probably. Certainly less than a 1,000. It was a great turnout but it didn’t make up for 25% or whatever of the east side seats being covered.

Still, I don’t believe there were only 14k there either.

RE: Illinois State Game Thoughts
Athletics is constantly harping on buying season tickets, getting to the game, supporting the team in person, filling Huskie Stadium, etc., etc. Then, we finally have a game where the stadium is full of rocking fans, and they under count the attendance and report completely false attendance numbers more appropriate for last year. I'm not sure what the hell they are trying to do by underreporting the attendance, but they should be ashamed of themselves. If they can't simply count the people entering the stadium because the technology is beyond their comprehension, they should hire an outside firm that knows how to do it. I do not want to hear any more crap coming out of the mouth of Frazier about fans not supporting this team when they can't even count all the fans who do.

This. So much this. So, as fans, what do we do to get this rectified? It shouldn't be our job to, but we can't just sit by and watch it happen

RE: Illinois State Game Thoughts
Great recap.

Excited about the youthful group at CB, but it could be painful watching Aitken get picked on while he’s developing because...and did anyone else notice...they weren’t throwing to Mckie’s side of the field in the 2nd half? May need to consider having him chase the best WR each down.

OL...I can’t remember in my 20 years of being a Huskie fan having this much of a concern upfront? I always feel like we are mini Wisconsin and just assume that group is going to be stout. Hopefully they figure it out or it’s going to be a rough ride.

Love the use of the TE’s. Bowers is a breath of fresh air with his eyes downfield and awareness in the pocket. the spine of our D is freaking so good...I can’t see many teams running the ball on us.

Ference is our best player.

I think we are in for it at Utah, just a bad matchup, but I will not be surprised if we keep it respectable and then go on to play Nebraska and Vandy very tough and possibly squeak out a win.

Loving the Hammock era so far!

They should just report tickets sold if they can't reliably count butts in the seats. And while the NCAA seems to have stopped enforcing it, there's technically a rule on the books that say you can be kicked out of FBS if average less than 15k.

Like I said earlier, there were two women with tickets for the seat next to me (one a season ticket holder, another with what looked like a printed ticket from the box office). I was impressed with the ticket office's offseason promos and the layout of the printed tickets but they need to get the basics down.

I agree that it seemed more than 14,500, but on the flipside, I did the Huskie Flex Pass and was given 40 yard lines seats in the 45th row (just behind the bench back section). If the stadium was that full, why wasn't I given worse seats? I bought the flex pack tickets on Thursday.

Bowers threw for 299 yards and 2 TDs on Saturday.
Childers has thrown for 299+ yards once in his career, last years MAC Championship.
Childers threw for 325 yards COMBINED in the first THREE games last year.

Bowers possesses some things you just can't teach. He's got excellent instincts and pocket presence. He steps into throws and delivers a very catchable ball with great placement. He will need to hit the gym up and add some strength though.

I too am worried about this line. Although it was a night and day difference once Cox came out and Starr came in.

Is there any way we can attribute some of the OL struggles to the change in offense where maybe the players don't quite match offense yet?

Bowers had those numbers and the offense did not play well. Imagine what it will be when the offense does start clicking...
