It remains to be seen if they have fixed those issues but if we can get some movement in the run game, it will help a lot.

Right now Chase Young and the DL is the player and unit that scares me most since he will be going up against an Offensive Line that is still trying to gel. Our OL is talented, but Chase Young may just be the best defensive player in college, and they have several other talented lineman. If we can neutralize their DLine somehow, our chances will improve dramatically.

Bolded, my concern is the health of UC's running backs coming out of the UCLA game. Will Doaks play? Was Warren injured on the play where he appeared to fumble late in the second half? Will Thomas return this week? Big concerns for a team that rushed the ball so well last season.

Warren's knee got bent back really bad...I hope he is 100%

Yea, especially considering Doaks was also banged up and Tavion Thomas seems to just be getting back into the rotation (out of the doghouse).

If we can get the run game going it will go a long way to helping us to a victory. Their DLine will easily be the best we face all year so regardless of the outcome it should be great experience for some of the young guys to improve heading into the conference schedule. Hopefully they are prepared to use TE’s to chip the edges as much as possible. We may also be able to use the DL’s aggressiveness against them by calling some screens, draws, etc...

Thespread.com has it at;

46% Cincinnati +15.5
54% Ohio State -15.5

Percent represents the percentage of the overall money on the team.

Unless I'm misunderstanding your post, you are mistaken. Lines are both typically somewhere around -110.

I've only ever seen payouts at buy rates on both sides for bettors when money is relatively even.

From the Dispatch:

Luke Fickell returns home, trying to beat Ohio State

Sounds like this might be the last time we play them under Coach Fickell;

Quote:At first, Luke Fickell wanted to cancel Saturday’s game against Ohio State...“When I first got the (UC) job, I remember talking to coach (Meyer), and we had said something about, ‘We ought to probably get out of this,’” Fickell said.

Also this tidbit...

Quote:That’s his head talking. Fickell’s heart is different. He still roots for the Buckeyes.

He's a past player, alum and former coach so i get it, i just don't like it. Plenty of time to be sentimental/nostalgic after Saturday. This Saturday he needs to sweep the leg.

My guess is if they offered to come to Nippert the administration would agree to it in a heartbeat, but without favorable terms I get why Fickell wouldn't want to play it and don't think UC would be in a hurry to either.

He probably knows first hand that it's rigged and the refs will make sure O$U wins.

He said in a press conference earlier this year that UC needs to/should be playing Louisville, Pitt, Kentucky, West Virginia (and something to the effect of other former Big East Schools). He said these are the schools we have more in common with and have past successes to draw off (he alluded to the Pike to Binns moment).

I don't disagree with him. UC would get a lot more mileage out of playing any of those schools on a home and home basis than these 2-3 games a decade one-offs with OSU. Playing those schools would help us with recruiting battles and getting more respect from the casual fan base.

Hopefully Fickell's competitive spirit kicks in and he wants to pound them into submission. I don't want to see a repeat of the love and respect fest we saw from Dantonio when he returned to Ohio Stadium.

In that article he, seemingly unprompted, references how much Cincinnati has been 'home' to he and his family which is always refreshing to hear.

"If UC continues to be successful, Fickell will be mentioned for bigger jobs. But he said that when he took the job, he wanted to be somewhere he could stay 10 years and raise his family.

Now that he is settled in at UC, “you realize how special it is and the things that we can do here, not just the program but in the community and for my family. We really hit the jackpot.”"

Hopefully those aren't just words and we actually get 10 years out of him.

Considering you love and respect your teammates or players (If your the coach), but kick the ever living sh!t out of them everyday except 12-15 Saturdays every year...I don't think finding BDF's competitive spirit will be any issue.

Only concerns I have are:
-O-Line Experience
-RB/DB Health
-OSU's Overall Talent (Containing Fields and the RBs with the amount of talent they have at WR is going to be a huge challenge for Marcus Freeman and Co)

I expect love/respect between Fick and Day, but they are both natural competitors.

RE: Week 2 Game Preview: The Team 107 Miles Up North I-71
First off, I hate OSU. I hate everything about them. I hate that they've tried to use the state legislature to suppress UC's rise to prominence and I hate that they'll do everything to prevent us from becoming a secondary athletic power in Ohio. I hate the arrogance of their fans and I hate how dominant they've been against us in football and basketball. I hate the bandwagons and that stupid buckeye mascot and their dumb fight song. There's not a single win I want more than UC football over Ohio State football. There's not a single team we could beat that would mean more to the program. No matter how much anyone tries to downplay this one, there's not a single doubt in my mind that it will be our most important contest of the year.

That being said, I'm realistic about our chances. Ohio State has been elite for years now. Urban Meyer was the second best college coach in the country and he brought them to another level. Ryan Day could be the worst coach in the country and they'd still be able to win the Big 10. But therein lies our chance--OSU has question marks in a few important areas: coaching and quarterback play.

The smart money says that Ryan Day and Justin Fields will be a tremendous success at OSU for a few years. I'm not sure there's anything to suggest that won't be the case. Nonetheless, we still don't know. We don't know how Day will make adjustments against a formidable opponent and we don't know how fields will respond to pressure. That first quarter against FAU was terrible. I know everyone likes to think otherwise, but Lane Kiffin is an average coach at best, and that FAU team went 5-7 in the conference USA last year. Let's not fret over a monster first quarter. It's probably wise not to make too much of their final 3 quarters either. The FAU lines suddenly showed up and the Ohio St. hogmolies didn't look too impressive. We dominated UCLA becuase our front 4 got pressure on DTR the whole game. Can they show up again? I know OSU has more talent on the line and they should be much better, but UCLA had a bunch of returning upperclassmen on their front and we completely smashed them.

Second key to the game will center around the running backs and tight ends. We have a bunch of guys that can exploit the OSU zone and we have a few runningbacks that can control the clock. Everyone likes to think that we need to open the offense and air it out to win this win but I don't think that's true. Luke's going to try to take an early lead and let Mike Warren drain the clock. The key will be keeping Metz from being overhwlemed by Chase Young on passing downs and figuring out how to get a push up front when we run Warren and Tavion (if he plays). We have a young line but they looked good against UCLA.

Also, fwiw, I've seen some discussion about how UCLA and OSU are comparable in terms of talent. They aren't, but it's not a huge gap either. UCLA's avg class ranking the past 4 years is 16. OSU is 3.75. Both sides have some five star players, a few top 300 kids too. But OSU is clearly on a level with the Alabama's and Clemson's the cfb world. [/b]

I’ve been to both communities on several occasions. Let’s just say you are probably right: the guy from Coshocton could not afford the jersey and ticket to the game.

Disappointed that we're stooping to bashing a small town; basically engaging in the exact same arrogance that Ryan Bettis was called out on earlier in the thread. Not sure if the guy in the pic is really from Coshocton, but let's not attribute any one person to the entire community. It's petty, unfair, and wrong. Everyone here knows what it's like for outsiders to bash Clifton or our campus based on perception from an incomplete story.

I agree. No need to bash the town. And even though this is a message board, I'm hoping that some of us can just focus on the Bearcats and the particulars of the game itself.

*steps off soapbox*

I'll take it a step further. I'm not saying fans are off-limits for a little humor, but the truth is I wish UC had a lot more "Walmart fans". We wouldn't be hand-wringing over whether we could sell out Nippert every week - that's for sure.

What is the ref/replay situation for the game? Isn't the etiquitte these days for the refs to be from the visiting team's confence? I sure hope that's the case Saturday.
Ask Stanford fans (their QB Costello didn not return to the game) about the Big 10 refs:

Quote:According to ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura, Brock Huard, who was in the broadcast booth for Saturday’s game, said the Big Ten officiating crew felt Brown’s hit was “incidental” contact to Costello’s head, therefore it did not warrant a targeting penalty. The play was not reviewed for targeting, either.

While I get that with Fickell as HC playing OSU regularly (e.g. annually) and occasionally beating them might be a double-edged sword in some ways, there's no reason besides money and fear that we shouldn't be playing OSU every year in football and basketball home-and-home. What other state is so invested in making sure the top 2 programs don't create such a rivalry as Ohio?

OSU aside, as far as the list goes I'm not sure why Purdue and Indiana aren't on it. We've got as much recent history with them as we do with UK.

New polls are out and we inched closer to the top 25. I know we should probably already be in the top 25 based on last year and what we return, but it does seem we are slowly starting to earn more respect nationally.

Coaches Poll: 2nd in “others”=27
AP Top 25: 4th in “others”=29

Those were just the teams he mentioned, I don’t think he was being exclusionary. I’ve heard him say a couple times he hasn’t paid much attention to scheduling and leaves that all to Mike.

I respect your opinion but I would also say lighten up a bit. Nothing was said in seriousness and poking fun at the expense of Ohio State is not the same as the crap that spews out on twitter and other social media with regard to politics and cultural divisiveness. This is a sports message board and not a referendum on social graces, civility and mild manners 100% of the time.

Impostor Boyzee State jumps 9 spots to AP #24 after beating a meh Florida St team. Otherwise, I'll take us moving to #29 [from #34 week prior I believe].
