I'm not doubting you guys when you say you sold it out, but why not report it as such?

I posted this on another thread, so here is what was explained for the difference in numbers.....

I believe they announced 21,980 and the stadium capacity is 22,500. However it was mentioned that the difference in scanned, sold tickets is because of the comp to NSU's Band and the Ballard comps for construction workers. It was also mentioned that, that could be the reason for the numbers and why the paid attendance numbers and actual numbers differed. Just using my observation of the crowd, near us, I would say there were more than 22,500 easily. I heard they sold more general admission tickets than available seats Student tickets SOLD OUT and the demand was huge from students). Those people had to go somewhere, that may have accounted for the 1,000 or so people standing, hovering on the 2nd level concourse behind the assigned seats (SOLD SEATS). NSU also SOLD OUT of their alot tickets and many of the people behind us standing were NSU fans. Those people stood the entire game. If the other concourses were the same I would suspect that would account for the difference in the numbers announced.

It was also stated that there were 10-15K on campus and around the University that tailgated on the mall and wonder around campus. There were a lot of people on the top of the parking garage watching the game as well. A friend, tried to get a ticket after the game started and was told it was sold out.

If ODU were smart. Future games that have huge demand, and if Fire Marshalls would allow. They could sell standing room only tickets for those concourse areas (those areas are large and could accommodate a lot of STANDING ROOM ONLY People for additional revenue and boost attendance numbers). I would imagine they could sell 3,000 - 4,000 or more for ODU home games against opponents like VA Tech, UVA, ECU, UNC, NC State and even others) That would move the attendance numbers for those games over 25,000.

IMO, it shows they SOLD the fans short on the stadium capacity. The Stadium should have been at least 25,00 from the start. However it shows the need to start a new fundraising campaign for the Phase II, so we can get those improvements and the capacity to 30,000 IMO.

It's not uncommon for tickets sold to exceed stadium capacity. I think Marshall vs. Louisville a couple years back was the case. USM has done it a time or two. Charlotte as well. etc...

Personally, I'm a fan of omitting games not played in the teams home stadium. Attendance wise, it will be a home game for Texas.

For capacity %, I will use the numbers from the games played at the teams home stadium.

The GA season ticket costs $60. The $5 ticket was a flash sale. Rumors were already swirling around that the crowd was going to hit 30k. I think Senter priced them at $5 on Friday to boost the numbers. But yeah for the most part a lot of the specials UTEP runs does make you wonder why in the world should we pay so much for season tickets. This past Saturday UTEP also had $15 reserved seats. There were tickets on the 50 yard line a few rows from the field at $15. That’s a steal considering they normally charge $60 or more for those seats.

I can personally vouch for this. I had two of my family members sit in make shift chairs on the ADA section on the west side under the press box because they wanted to be at the game for the opening of the stadium and the box office folks couldn't find a ticket to sell.

Charlotte did a $4.90 GA ticket before the game on Thursday and then again for 49 hours shortly after the game for the next home game. My season ticket gets me the seat where I want it in the same spot every home game. That is my motivation. However, the average fan will spend at least $10 in concessions at a game. I spent about $100 on me and my son for two Jerseys and two lemonades. We ate at Hooters prior to the game, but typically we eat some stadium food. Also, we introduced beer at your seat this season. That will drive up sales. The point is that the ticket is a single revenue stream that drives other revenue. Better to put a butt in the seat at a cheap price than to leave it empty.

RE: 2019 Football Attendance Tracker
This stuff is so interesting to me. With college football attendance down everywhere, you have to wonder the research that is going on regarding this topic. I wonder the cost/benefit analysis of ticket prices at our level. It’s obviously better to have 35k people at the game than 20k, but at what ticket price point. Then too, when all of us host the big school up the street, we could sell 50k for 60$ each. I think these will be major issues moving forward for all of us. Interesting to see how it is managed in other Spots.

There is something to valuing a ticket, at least at a certain area. The middle of our home side is reserved for Eagle Club only and they won’t sell them to GA. If everywhere else sells out, better sign up for Eagle Club or you aren’t getting in. Maybe we have a few empty seats that are desirable, but it makes those who spend the money know the value they’re getting.

I think they can look at the NASCAR model as a sign of what not to do at our level. NASCAR will tear down seats versus selling tickets at a lower cost. I did some research on this about 4 or 5 years ago for my MBA, and NASCAR was bleeding on ticket revenue as much as a decade ago. However, they make it up in TV revenue. Our schools like many others cannot get by why this model. We have to build up our fan base the old fashioned way through putting butts in the seats. With our TV contracts, we can't afford not to fill the stadiums with people in the stands. I think the priority has to be for non-seat licensed season ticket holders. The seat licensed season ticket holders are going to buy their tickets and should get rewarded, but marketing efforts need to go to selling season tix. Then single game tix followed by flash sales. Charlotte made over $1 million in revenue last year and it appears this year we are focused on building a fan base as much as we are revenue.

So we had a sellout and we are 7th out of 9 in attendance.

We're gonna need a bigger boat.

Seems like this years NSU game should be the ODU Football Home Attendance Record? Last years Virginia Tech game was announced as the record attendance at 20,500.

I think the strategy is actually to build suites into one of the sidelines first since that provides a faster/better ROI.

But I agree 100% with you, and many ODU fans do too

I think it will go higher since that number is reduced for NSU's band and the construction workers. If we don't lose 69-0 at VT and UVA, the next home game (ECU) should be the real sellout number.
