It's hard to tell, because the B1G has only played 4 games vs other P5 so far, and they are 2-2 in those games. They have a nice win in Maryland beating ranked Syracuse, but then again ranked Nebraska lost to Colorado. The other win is Purdue over Vandy.

So IMO, saying the B1G is best because Maryland beat Syracuse and Purdue beat Vandy - while Northwestern lost to Stanford and UNL lost to Colorado - is a bit premature.

All good points. I guess I was looking at other teams like Indiana and Illinois, which could be a bit improved compared to their 2018 selves (thus giving the Big Ten some nice depth this year). But as you correctly note ... way too early.

Hey, your speculation is as good as anyone's, and it's fun discussing this stuff.

That is true. But I would not use the term "garbage." 1. it's a bit of stretch and 2. I would not want folks to refer to the teams and conferences I follow as "garbage" so, to be consistent, I will not do likewise. It's the old Golden Rule. Maybe I'm just an old softy but that's how I approach it.

Yes, the AAC has clearly played tougher P5 teams than has the MW but the MW hasn't played junk P5. The AAC has played five P5 who were ranked at the time they played them, whereas the MW has played two.

But, that doesn't mean the MW has played 'garbage' P5. Yes, UCLA is garbage, but heck the AAC played them too. They have played respectable P5, just not as good as the AAC has.

And the MW is playing five more P5 this weekend, including two ranked teams like the AAC is playing. So we will learn more about both soon enough.

Agree. We'll have a much better idea after four games have been played.

My gut feeling is the MWC is going to end up being slightly better overall than the AAC this season.

But I do see a scenario in which the American surges and earns continued respect from fair-minded fans.

On this theme, I was hoping Tulane could have kept the score a bit closer with Auburn. A missed (possibly) opportunity.

Temple vs. Maryland is huge.

Little early to be judging who is garbage and who is a power.

Just tells me we need about 80 teams in Power Conferences. After that the drop-off is noticeable.

I’d say 80 is a lot. 40 to 50 is more realistic. Half of the ACC have no business being in a power conference. Same for a couple of schools for the other P5 conferences.

But we’ll never see a true split because a school like Oregon or Michigan State would hate to be the new Wake Forest and Minnesota.

The Sun Belt is looking better than ever this year.
Easily a better conference than CUSA
Would love to see Marshall and Southern Miss join the SB

What half of the ACC? Which schools?

On behalf of the Sun Belt, I'd gladly accept their application. 04-cheers

I’m one of the few who would like to see Marshall in the AAC to replace UCONN (If that becomes necessary to have to go 12)
But the SB is a tighter geographical fit than CUSA and better.

Yes, this will be a fun list.

So which 7 schools?

BTW, my point is I think there are about 80 programs out there with enough talent, fan base and institutional commitment to run at a pretty high level.

I like variety. CFB doesn't need to be the NFL

The ACC list would be the same 7 teams from almost everyone responding:

1.Clemson
2.Florida State
3.Miami
4.Virginia Tech
5.North Carolina
6.Virginia

Pick the 7th from: Syracuse, NC State, Louisville, Duke, Pitt, GT

Football oriented guys would pick from GT, Louisville, NC State.

BB oriented guys would pick from Duke, Louisville, Syracuse

Cut it to 40-50 programs and there will be a lot more people who will lose interest in the sport. I can think of no other entity out there where people think contraction will grow interest in their product, yet we have so many people who think this way about college athletics.

Well it’s not Clemson or Florida State. It’s mostly the former Big East schools minus Miami and VT.

There’s not going to be a contraction so it’s a moot point. Power schools like to feast on the UTEPs of the world for an automatic win and in return said school gets a nice check. It’s a win win for both parties.

There’s already a separation, contraction, call it what you want. It’s actually always been that way but the BCS made the gap wider.
