True. Of course---on the other side of the ledger---the big Boise signature win over Florida St lost a bit of shine this week when ULM took the Seminoles to overtime in Tallahassee.

I thought that was a big win for Boise because of the circumstances - a northern team traveling 2,000 miles and dealing with the Tallahassee 94 degree heat better than FSU did. I've never thought FSU was going to go 10-2 or something.

Anyway, the AAC certainly has big opportunities this coming week, with Houston hosting Washington State, Temple facing Maryland - both WSU and MD are now ranked - Tulsa vs Oklahoma State, and UCF vs Stanford.

Though Stanford getting crushed by USC takes away a lot of the lustre of that matchup, LOL.

I think Houston beats WSU. WSU is ranked #20 and I'm not sure why, they've played two really bad teams. In contrast, the game is at Houston, and by playing Oklahoma, Houston has already faced better athletes than WSU has so won't be surprised by them at all. This is a chance to get a high-profile win over an inflated P5 team.

Early prediction: Houston 31 WSU 17

Im Houston homer---but I have my doubts about what we have this year. We seem to be working through the process of adjusting to a new staff, new offense, and new defense more slowly than I had expected. Im hoping it will "click" soon---but idk. I think in a friendly NRG we have a better shot of pulling off the upset than we did In Norman---but thats about as far as I will go. Im hoping for the best. 04-cheers

FWIW, I liked what I saw of Houston vs Oklahoma. Oklahoma, maybe even more than Clemson, will embarrass the hell out of an over-matched team. They beat those teams 60 - 14, they never take the foot off the gas. And most teams they play are over-matched, even most Big 12 teams. Houston didn't look over-matched.

I wouldn't make anything of the lacklustre result vs Prairie View or whoever you played yesterday. Games vs HBCUs are to rest starters a lot, give backups a chance to play, and try a few things out to confuse future opponents film study. Not to be taken seriously.

Mountain West conference is showing all-around better strength than the American at this point of the season.

AAC, looks like UCF, Houston, Memphis, Tulane, and the rest. Cincinnati a surprise yesterday.

Any time you go in and win in Tallahassee it is a big win.
Doesn’t matter what team or conference.

IMO, the 15 point spread re Cincy vs OS was the best evidence that Aresco's incessant hyping of the AAC has made national inroads. Since it has made no inroads with me i expected that result. Cincy didn't look impressive vs a bad UCLA team and there was zero reason to think OS's roster of 4 and 5 star guys wouldn't expose Cincy.

Still, Houston and Memphis do look good and UCF is presumptively so. Those three could lead the AAC past the MW.

Houston should have a shot against WSU but I highly doubt we hold them to 17. Really important game for us though. We lose that game and it'll be a struggle to get to a bowl.

I don't think so. IMO Houston is going to have a lot of success in AAC play. I see at least 6 wins on the AAC schedule alone, plus throw in North Texas as an easy win too. And that's if everything goes as badly as it can. I think 7 wins (8 counting the FCS game) is your floor.

We'll see.

It's early but the MWC seems a bit better overall than the American for G5 superiority.

In the P5, Big Ten appears the best — thanks, in part, to a so-so, at best, SEC East Division.

Massey Composite and Sagarin disagree with your first point.
Massey Composite disagrees with your second, but Sagarin does by division and I haven't done the simple math I did for AAC and mwc yet.

(But it's still too early in the season to be paying to much attention to any ratings or rankings, really)

Yes, all computers use data from last year as inputs until around week 6 so before then it is pointless to look at them.

That is true. With the exception of UCF, most of the top AAC teams have played really good P5 teams - Wisconsin, Ohio State, Oklahoma being examples. The MW hasn't faced those teams.

And there's more coming for the AAC - Temple and Houston play ranked Maryland and Washington State teams this week. The AAC has done a good job scheduling top-level P5.

Of course, we have to see how the whole season unfolds to know who was really top level, but that's how it looks now.

It's hard to tell, because the B1G has only played 4 games vs other P5 so far, and they are 2-2 in those games. They have a nice win in Maryland beating ranked Syracuse, but then again ranked Nebraska lost to Colorado. The other win is Purdue over Vandy.

So IMO, saying the B1G is best because Maryland beat Syracuse and Purdue beat Vandy - while Northwestern lost to Stanford and UNL lost to Colorado - is a bit premature.

Once Blake Anderson showed up in Vegas I figured UNLV was toast. Before that thought it'd be close with AState winning

That is true. But I would not use the term "garbage." 1. it's a bit of stretch and 2. I would not want folks to refer to the teams and conferences I follow as "garbage" so, to be consistent, I will not do likewise. It's the old Golden Rule. Maybe I'm just an old softy but that's how I approach it.

All good points. I guess I was looking at other teams like Indiana and Illinois, which could be a bit improved compared to their 2018 selves (thus giving the Big Ten some nice depth this year). But as you correctly note ... way too early.
