How Luke Fickell stayed true to himself and nailed his second act
This actually came before the UCLA game, but it's a must-read by Pete Thamel nonetheless imo:

How Luke Fickell stayed true to himself and nailed his second act: 'He’s one of the best I’ve been around'

A few of the early comments from OSU fans are worth reading too, but of course the trolls quickly jump in to sour things.

RE: How Luke Fickell stayed true to himself and nailed his second act
I love the image of him wrestling Freeman, but this may be the most pertinent bit right now:

Quote:The ties to Ohio State run deeper than Fickell playing five years at the school and spending 16 seasons on staff. He also grew up in Columbus and his wife, Amy, actually lived in the stadium while a student there. (The honors dorm was located there her freshman year.)

“It’s like playing against your brother,” Fickell said, noting his emotions will be more intense than sentimental. “That’s a big-time deal. I’m a competitor, so there’s no one I’d want to beat up more than my brother. I mean, holy cow, there’s no one I’d want to play harder against.”

Ohio State should just forfeit the game. They have no chance.

Fick's quotes give me hope that he really does want to beat tOSU.
I never believed Dantonio wanted to or tried to.
I hope Gino gets to address the team before the game.

Next Saturday is my birthday. No gift would make my birthday better than beating the Buckeyes..

And this regime vetted him and kept him in his first recruiting class. Look, if it was as simple as signing guys, TT would have have been here for the rest of his golfing career. It's not. CLF has a coaching staff and a system in place that develops. That's the difference. It's not a recruiting number or some magical collection of stars. Make no mistake, CLF holds his weight with any UC coach ever in that regard. Feel free to be that guy. TT may have found Ridder. But TT also would have squandered his talent. CLF has not.

CTT got the commit, but I think technically CLF signed him. Regardless it's a fair point that people often overlook about a lot of our talent this year and last.

Glad to have Ridder, but wasn't down to UC or E. Kentucky?

Ridder’s official visit and signing were under Fick. Tubs got the commit. So it was a dual effort for sure. But under Tubs he wouldn’t have taken his first snap until this year. Maybe.

To be fair Taylor got the Ridder commitment. Tubs was semi retired and anything that happened here was only a result of rogue assistants trying to prove themselves so they could get a job when Tubs was fired.

Hot take: Coach Gino is a better QB coach than Zac Taylor...

Oops did I say that outloud?

Taylor turned Gunner Kiel into Chaz Anderson...so I'm not super sure that's a high bar 03-lmfao

Never really thought of that, but my god would that be a hell of a talk. 4 years away...4 attempts...don't think about what if 15 years after, make it happen.

With that being the case, if Fickell came here a bit earlier maybe we would have kept Jeremy Larkin. A recruit that Tubs "had" but didn't bother to contact for the entire academic year up to his decommitment.

Agree, recruiting is more than just securing a commitment. Fickell was able to flip a commit or two from other schools on signing day as well.

And Gino was the QB when UC played a game up in CBus and ran a play Dantonio didn't call (it worked) and Dantonio told him if he did it again he'd be benched.

I never liked Dantonio. I thank Michigan St. every day for taking him off our hands. We never would have gotten to where we were with Kelly under Dantonio.

I don't have that feeling about Fickell. I think he's here to win and he's not perusing the want ads daily like old stone face was.

Maybe Tubs (with more effort) or Fickell (if he was here) could have kept him, but I thought the word at the time was that Larkin was always hoping for that Northwestern offer for whatever reason. And it probably wasn't a factor, but it's worth noting that Tubs got a commit from Doaks the week after Larkin. Unfortunately, Larkin's football career is over as you probably know, but all in all I think it's worked out pretty well for UC.
