Maybe UCLA sucks and Cincy's a good team that for some reason didn't put as many points on the board as they could have. Games like that happen sometimes. 07-coffee3
yeah, especially first game of the year....

Arizona and UCLA, by no means historic PAC bottom-dwellers, looked lost against not very good Hawaii and Cincy teams.

The PAC needs Oregon to beat Auburn, badly.

Can you define not very good teams? Is that a definition usually reserved for 1 game?

Let me guess: You think Cincy looked impressive in winning over a P5 Power, and this is a Great Thing for The Bearcats and the AAC? And on the basis of One Game, right? No?

OK, I'll concede: Maybe UCLA is really a top 20 team and is going to win their next 10 games. It's just that the Nippert Bearcats are a top 10 team who are going to the Cotton Bowl while whining UCF style about being left out of the playoffs, so the game was the result of a very good team just happening to run in to a great team.

That's possible. But I doubt it. We shall see.

07-coffee3

It's not about UCLA, it's about your presumption that Cincy is "not very good" when they are coming off of an 11-win season and picked by most experts to compete with UCF for the AAC East title.

But, I guess you are right about one thing. We shall see.

It's not a 'presumption', it's based on what I saw last night. Couldn't care less about winning 11 games last year and prognostications about the Mighty AAC East, and neither should you, as that is presumptive and/or irrelevant.

But I do agree that we have to see how the season shakes out to know for sure.

BTW, that's not just "one thing", it's the whole thing.

I'd say it's also possible for Cincy they were caught looking ahead somewhat to their next game- @ Ohio St. And frankly probably didn't show everything in their arsenal- wanting to save that for Ohio St.

According to Coach Fickell UC stopped blitzing and stunting after the 1st half and just ran a base defense. The plan going into the season was to be more creative since we had attrition from last year on the DL. Our front 4 held their own so there was no need.

Yep, that's possible. Lots of things are possible right now, the season just started. I think we can all agree that only time will tell.

FWIW, I think Ohio State is going to fall off significantly. The pollsters and media must seem to think that coaching doesn't matter and Ohio State will always be a top 5 team no matter what. Truth is, like all programs, they are as good as their head coach, and for the past 7 years they had an all-time great in Urban Meyer. The odds that the new guy is just as good are extremely slim.

It looked to me like the UCLA QB was playing with broken bones in his throwing hand and couldn't grip the football. So many unforced errors it was hard to imagine that they still had a chance to win it in the fourth quarter. And then they made even more unforced errors. Chip Kelly needs to find a QB, and fast.

I understand looking at it from run/pass stats point of view, but having watched the game, it should have been closer.

E.g., with about four minutes left, UCLA appeared to get a TD on a scoop and score, but the refs ruled the Cincy runner was down. He almost surely wasn't down, it was a bad call, but ESPN had shockingly poor camera coverage and the play was in a crowd and so there was no conclusive replay to overturn the call. That would have made it 24-21.

Also, IIRC, UCLA fumbled in the Cincy red zone, I don't think Cincy did that.

So if anything, UCLA bungled or were deprived of more obvious scoring opportunities.

From the stats, I wonder how Minnesota really even won that game. SDSU out-passed and rushed them, more first downs, less penalty yardage, and SDSU picked up more sacks and tackles for loss. Minnesota punted more.

UCLA 14

UCLA is a very bad football team.

That was an embarrassment. A pathetic performance by UCLA. Their quarterback, Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR), was horrible. He completed 8 of 26 passes, with two interceptions and two fumbles in the red zone. Both fumble were balls that slipped out of his hands. He was not touched. He was missing open receivers badly and he has no touch on his throws. He is supposed to be somewhat athletic, but he only gained 24 yards on 10 carries.

UCLA is playing 87 freshman and sophomores and they have some key injuries. They returned 18 starters from last year and they have a lot of team speed. They will be up-and-down this year, but they need better quarterback play from DTR to have any hope for success this season. He was a four star, dual threat recruit from Las Vegas with offers from schools like LSU, Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Michigan State, Oregon, Florida, Florida State and South Carolina. He chose UCLA. But he has not looked good since he got to UCLA. They need DTR to get better quickly or go to the back-up, who looked good in spring practice.

I watched the game. Like many games it was decided by big plays, not steady statistical dominance.

E.g., Minnesota trailed 21-20 midway through the 4th and SDS had the ball and appeared to be in control, but they fumbled a snap in their own territory and Minnesota cashed in for the winning score.

Nah, Cincy had a 1st down at UCLA’s 2 and threw a pick. Blew several other easy TD opportunities as well.

Objectively would have been 38-14 based on how much better Cincy was despite how sloppy they played.

PAC 12 just ain’t it.

You are correct!

I will add too, Cincinnati's defense was flying around making plays. Regardless of how bad UCLA is, the defense played without a care in the world of making a mistake. That to me is a total reflection of Luke Fickell and it's a dangerous defense to play against. Ohio State better be on their A game offensively.

I say that more as a shot at SDSU for choking. They clearly had some costly mistakes.

I'm not a Bearcat fan nor am I piling on!
I'm telling this board what I saw while watching the game.

You are the loud mouth that stated Cincinnati was not any good. You determined this after one game, in which they won.

So you saying they are no good and me stating their defense looked good are two completely different things. I have no idea what the season will hold for Cincinnati, but again, last night the defense looked really good.

I consider myself one of the nicer posters on here, I'm about to become a real d**k with you!

So I had an...impolite...response to "Quo Vadis." I apologize for that.

I don't care if he finds the result of last night's game "laughable" or not. UC scored 24 points, UCLA scored 14. The only ones who should be laughing are the Bearcats because we're 1-0.

Quo's opinions and feelings about that are really irrelevant. Laugh all you want.

I know the "rules" say that any G5 win over any P5 team is fair game, but it's hard for me to call Cincy's win "laughable". They were favored to win, at home. In the ACC pickem 81% of the players picked the Bearcats to win. Frankly, I think it might have been laughable if UCLA had won.
