Some WAC basketball observations...
I noticed Cal State Bakersfield lost one of its assistant coaches this month. Benjy Taylor took the University of Tuskegee head coaching job; reducing Rod Barnes coaching staff. I wonder if the position will be filled soon? Taylor was hired at CSUB to replace Marc Hsu. Also, I wonder why Barnes hasn't filled his 13th scholarship? The CSUB only lists 12 players with one transfer redshirting this season; only 11 active players.

UM Kansas City has yet to put out a 2019-20 roster. The roster lists no one.

I noticed that Chicago State only has two assistant coaches in Irvin's staff. Is CSU that strapped for cash that they can't afford a 3rd assistant coach?

And look at Dixie State's recruiting class (on the verbal commit site), it appears Dixie State will be hard pressed to compete in the WAC initially. DSU doesn't have much D1 talent on its' roster. Many of Coach Judkin's current players would not make a WAC rotation. Unless Judkins' next recruiting class in bursting with D1 talent, I don't think DSU will have the same positive start as Grand Canyon and Cal Baptist had when they played their first season in the WAC. Majerle and Croy were already stock piling D1 transfers prior to playing their first WAC season. Judkins still has one more D2 season (and recruiting class) to improve his Trailblazer roster.

I'm not sure it is accurate to say Majerle was "stock piling D1 transfers" like Croy was able to do. Majerle had about 5 months to cobble together a team that, to be fair, did include a couple of okay D1 transfers (even if D. Walker was dismissed from the team before the Lopes even made it to conference play). However, Croy and Judkin had/have an almost 2-year runway to get ready for the step up in competition. I'm sure DSU will be fine. They certainly couldn't be any worse than the worst the WAC has to offer.

Judkin still has a season to gear up Dixie State's roster for D1 play. GCU had a number of D1 transfers but I forgot Majerle had to assemble a D1 capable team in such a short time. In GCU's first D1 season, Majerle built a roster with New Mexico transfer Demetrius Walker, Colorado transfer Jeremy Adams, Weber State transfer Blake Davis, and Texas A&M transfer Daniel Alexander.

Dixie State was always tough in the PacWest Conference. In the 2012-2013 season, the last for GCU, Dixie State swept GCU, CBU and Azusa Pacific. They also knocked off UCSD in a single game. They played UNLV that season in an exhibition game and lost 81-80 in overtime. UNLV went 25-10 that season and got an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. The point is, they will be very competitive in the WAC. Dixie State has a good following, averaging 2,325 fans per game last season, 2nd in D2. In the 2012-2013 season, they averaged 2,902.

I enjoyed watching both play, but Davis & Alexander were recruited to GCU by Russ Pennell. Blake Davis also kind of lucked his way back into D1, as he had dropped down to D2 at least a full season before GCU accepted the WAC invite. The Lopes also only had the services of Walker for a whopping 9 games in that first season before he was kicked off the team.

While there were D1 experienced players on that roster, the two biggest impact players for GCU in 2013-14 were Killian Larson & Jerome Garrison. In that regard, maybe Judkin already has the cornerstones in place to be successful from the jump. I haven't looked at their roster to know for sure, but we at least know it's possible. You don't last something like 14 years at one place if you don't have an idea of what you're doing, so I'm sure he and the program will be just fine.

Judkin still has the opportunity to bring in Grad transfers and JUCOs next season to beef up his roster but he lost the opportunity with this recent recruiting class to bring in D1 transfers; who need to sit out a transfer season. And, stockpile for Dixie State's first D1 season; something Croy did at CBU prior to last season.

Yeah I have a hard time not seeing Dixie State be pretty competitive. St. George is a pretty nice location for recruiting IMO. Of course I frequent St. George a decent amount so maybe I'm biased.
