Isakson stepping down at the end of the year
Longtime Georgia politician Johnny Isakson is retiring at the end of the year due to health concerns (Parkinson's is no joke - good luck to him). The Georgia governor will appoint someone to fill his term for 2020 but now both Georgia Senate races will be decided at the 2020 polls. It could be another chance for the Dems to regain the Senate but it will depend on who runs. Stacey Abrams has already said she won't run for either seat.

When Isakson got involved in politics (~1975), Georgia had 2 Democrat US Senators and a 10-0 Democrat delegation in the US House. State legislature was something like 97% Democrat. There were entire counties in rural Ga. — a lot of them, actually — where GOP candidates couldn’t get 100 votes to save their life. Isakson played a big role in changing all that.

Just as no one is entitled to hold public office, neither is anyone obligated to seek public office. Nonetheless, a lot of Abrams’ fans here in Georgia feel very let-down in her decision to take a pass on both the Perdue seat and now the Isakson seat, too. For all the hype about how Georgia is turning Dem. — and yeah, there is some proof to back up the hype — the fact is, Team Blue doesn’t have a whole lot to choose from in terms of statewide candidates. So Abrams’ absence is keenly felt.
