Exclamation AAC Commissioner wants to eliminate divisions in football
Matt Murschel
@osmattmurschel
Just got off the phone with AAC commissioner Mike Aresco, who told me the league has filed official paperwork with the NCAA for a waiver to eliminate divisions in football.

The league hopes to get an answer by October and Aresco expects to see it approved.

Story coming ...

This could allow conferences the ability to dramatically alter their schedules and possibly how one conference determines which teams qualify for their CCG. This is an issue that must be resolved if conferences want to entertain any idea of moving towards 16 members and so on.

It won't affect an even number move to 16. What it will do is open the door for conferences who want 15 or perhaps want more than 16.

Under current division rules, you have to play everybody in your division do moving to sixteen teams means 7 required opponents. Even if evenly rotating opponents with the remaining open conference game or two, conferences with large numbers of members would essentially create two separate conferences.

Eliminating or modifying the structural rules can help and enable more realignment.

Let each conference organize their divisions, and decide who plays who, however they want. Each sets their own championship criteria.

Several years back, the ACC was stopped from doing so, while granting the 10-member B12 new accommodations.

Flex divisions could prove quite workable for some conferences. If not, revert back or try another method. Structure doesn't need to be so entrenched.

I hope it passes.

I'd love to see the SEC go to a 3 permanent, 5 rotating opponent set up.

The current scheduling format is pretty bad, overall

SEC split into div for more money
Divless would be less money

Hogwash! The CCG is what created more money. That would remain. Going divisionless will permit better scheduling which will drive more revenue and it allows for easier expansion which also will drive more revenue. Instead of 2 division champs playing it off it would be the 2 schools with the best record playing it off.

15 member conferences could work in a non-division format. Organize three clusters of 5. Each school plays the 4 other members of their own cluster, and rotate playing 2 members of each of the other 2 clusters. If 9 conference games, do a rotating 3-2 format with the other two clusters.
