RE: Week 1 - Kent State @ Arizona State
Arizona State probably couldn’t win the MAC. This has nothing to do with scheduling. I just want to see a competent football team that improves from one game, one season to the next. In other words, I’d like to watch a different movie than this same outdated tired one we’ve been watching for decades.

and be playing on a lovely fall-like evening rather than the AZ heat

HIGHLIGHTS

They covered!!
They were on at 10pm on the PAC channel so nobody really got to watch this debacle.
Now, go make some more money for the department!

RE: Week 1 - Kent State @ Arizona State
The play calling and gameplan for this one was interesting and seemed to be different than how last year's team approached the money games. Not passing much, keeping the clock moving, not passing on third and 4ish, limiting Barrett's snaps. It almost felt more like the Paul Haynes trying to stay healthy approach, which I totally understand. It will be interesting to see if the same approach is used at Auburn and Wisconsin or was this partially driven by the fear of exhausting kids in 100 degree heat in a game we likely wouldn't win.

I would like to be a little more optimistic than most on this board. I did see progress being made. The lines on both sides of the ball looked much better than teams of the past. In fact, the defense could have made a statement with a little help from the offense. Dropped passes, fumbles and poor QB leadership caused most of the scoring spread. If the coaching staff can correct these mistakes, we will see a much improved team as the season progresses. At least, I see some legitimate FBS talent on this team.

I watched the game & came away with a few observations...

Discipline. Five penalties for the first game of the year was a positive. All three units displayed good discipline, minimizing the mental mistakes that drives everyone nuts. Kudos to the coaching staff for instilling this.

ASU is beatable. I agree with the previous comment that ASU may not win the MAC. The freshman QB has a bright future, but still has much to learn. Would like to see how KSU would have fared if this game was played on a neutral site. With the exception of a few teams, the PAC 12 is not as formidable as it was in the past (re: UCLA/UC).

Crum reminded me a bit of Spencer Keith.

Buddha has a chance to be special.

The size & depth of the offensive line stood out as compared to previous years. I noted only one reference to KSU being "under-sized".

Lot's of talent on defense. Majette was relentless.

I still think the light switch will flip in 2nd half of season similar to 2011 season and have a nice finish. Hopefully, fans/players don't become too discouraged before then.

I sat down and watched the game again today and I agree with you. While we kept shooting ourselves in the foot with fumbles, dropped balls, poor calls/execution and other miscues, they never did get going, I think we have some talent there that can compete in the MAC. I also think ASU is better than given credit for, we’ll have to see how the season unfolds to see how they turn out, but I think they can be better than they were last year once their young QB gets more comfortable. Last year they played a handful of top 25 teams and won a couple of them.

Fans are always discouraged with this team. Until they start a season with an upset win or show they can be competitive in the MAC no casual fan should waste their time. There is no good reason to be optimistic until then.

One thing is certain if you’re watching ESPN tonight: Wisconsin is not Arizona St. Sheesh.

RE: Week 1 - Kent State @ Arizona State
I'm curious, what does everyone think about Crum playing so much? Based on SL's comments at halftime it seemed like he planned to play him so it wasn't all about Barrett's performance. I like Crum but I'd really like to see him redshirted if possible. I'm wondering if maybe the plan is to try to spell Barrett and keep him healthy in the money games then hope you don't need Crum later in the year so you can keep him to 4 or fewer games. For what it's worth it didn't look like Crum held the one kick we had. So at least we're not eating into his 4 games as a fg holder again.

RE: Week 1 - Kent State @ Arizona State
I can see Crum spelling Barrett frequently either to get a spark or just keep him fresh, so I really think he’ll play most games. I get the feeling they like Schlee a lot too, so I don’t see them holding back Crum enough to get another year out of him locking down the starting roll for the next 3 years. I see this staff making short term solutions and not worrying that far down the road. Quite frankly, if they have some quick success the caliber of recruit increases plus the staff will be in demand and looking to cash in.

I am going to remain optimistic and be hopeful for the MAC season - I think we will be much improved from last year - but too many money games for my liking - I would have loved to have driven over for a home game and spent a day or two in Kent and dropped some $$

The thing that bugged me the other night, other than the fumbles, was the passing game. It was pretty non-existent. Last year I liked it.
