Those pups ... when they start barking, mine INSTANTLY jump up, and start looking around to see what's up. It's hilarious.
There's not even optimism to be found in the GTAA beyond unproven ideas, the AD, and new fundraising. The numbers say GT is across the board better in all sports on average by a standard deviation than they were when Bobinski was ruining everything. But in the sports that matter to fans they have either completely flat lined to the point where people are asking if they'll even one ONE conference game (football, basketball) or they're a pre-packaged annual meltdown disappointment in the post season (baseball).
I've never seen GT Athletics in such a sorry state before. And there is still one major Bobinski hire that hasn't even been flushed yet (Pastner). The GTAA is staring down a half decade of misery and gloom where there is absolutely nothing to cheer for. The bye week was by far the most enjoyable week of CFB so far. I may just pretend they have a bye this week too. And every week for the next few years.
I think they've brought GT up in passing for about 30 seconds or so in the shows so far this week. Both times it was to say, more or less, you're awful and you knew this season was going to suck you're just going to have to be patient. (Even patient people can reasonably expect to beat Citadel....)
Yeah ... that's a tough spot ... and isn't Durham a Yellow Jacket announcer (or maybe he was)? Or maybe it was his dad ... hell I can't remember but I know there's a connection there somewhere.
As far as Georgia Tech football goes, I kinda expected a rough transition year this year. A complete changing of systems pretty much guarantees that.
But after that .... you guys will be tough. I don't see how you could be IN Atlanta, with the academic reputation you have, and NOT be able to find crazy athletic kids to suit up for you.
I will say this -- Packer and Durham (but mainly Packer) constantly pound the drum that Miami, Florida State and Virginia Tech HAVE to be good, for the ACC to be perceived as strong. And that's not wrong ... BUT ... I would posit that Georgia Tech could EASILY become a team that carries the reputation for the conference, given what I mentioned above.
Add history, with proximity to VERY fertile recruiting grounds, and the quality of school you have, and it won't be long for the Yellow Jackets to be a power on the grid iron.
As a Louisville fan, we don't have fertile recruiting grounds in our back yard. We don't have a history like Tech (or Pitt, or a lot of schools in this conference). We just have desire ... and that can only take you so far. We have to work hard to overcome those things. Maybe in time, we can develop a history that works for us.
But you guys have it .... so just hang in there. I think good times are in your near future.
