Really warming up to Packer & Durham on ACCN
I'm enjoying Packer & Durham on AACN in the mornings. A laid back show, but content on the league I follow the most. So of course it's good in that sense.

But mixing it with Dan Patrick Show, it's a very good blend of sports in the morning.

When it comes to sports talk, I’m a homer for sure.

A tough gig, balancing out the mentions amongst 15 schools. But they manage it well.

And the local radio guys WISH they could do their jobs focusing on one school, as well as these two do their jobs, focusing on 15. Maybe that bar (local Louisville sports radio) is pretty low (it is) ... but still.

Just my opinion ...

Do they mostly talk football?

I like SEC hatin' Packer. He isn't spitting bile or yelling or Finebauming ... just subtle little digs he drops like breadcrumbs to mark a trail.

"San Jose State? I guess it just means more in Fayetteville."

"At half time of Clemson-Charlotte they were filming a movie. So they had fake Clemson Tigers run down the hill for the movie. And as I speak the Fake Tigers opened a 7 point favorite, and are now a 10 point favorite against South Carolina."

Yes. Packer talks all sports, but gives more weight to football for sure.

I loved to hate Woody Durham. Wes' voice is nearly the same as Woody's 30 years ago, except I like Wes. This has probably been told before but his mother was once asked who she listened to when GT and Carolina played ball, and she said "my son of course - I have to listen to Woody talking all the time".

YES .... I LOVE when he does that ... and he does it enough that you notice, but it's not obnoxiously over the top.

They put themselves through torture, when they do their ACC POwer rankings week to week. But again ... somehow, they balance brutal honesty, with a solid dose of optimism, so it doesn't feel like they're just crapping all over a team.

Those pups ... when they start barking, mine INSTANTLY jump up, and start looking around to see what's up. It's hilarious.

There's not even optimism to be found in the GTAA beyond unproven ideas, the AD, and new fundraising. The numbers say GT is across the board better in all sports on average by a standard deviation than they were when Bobinski was ruining everything. But in the sports that matter to fans they have either completely flat lined to the point where people are asking if they'll even one ONE conference game (football, basketball) or they're a pre-packaged annual meltdown disappointment in the post season (baseball).

I've never seen GT Athletics in such a sorry state before. And there is still one major Bobinski hire that hasn't even been flushed yet (Pastner). The GTAA is staring down a half decade of misery and gloom where there is absolutely nothing to cheer for. The bye week was by far the most enjoyable week of CFB so far. I may just pretend they have a bye this week too. And every week for the next few years.

I think they've brought GT up in passing for about 30 seconds or so in the shows so far this week. Both times it was to say, more or less, you're awful and you knew this season was going to suck you're just going to have to be patient. (Even patient people can reasonably expect to beat Citadel....)

Yeah ... that's a tough spot ... and isn't Durham a Yellow Jacket announcer (or maybe he was)? Or maybe it was his dad ... hell I can't remember but I know there's a connection there somewhere.

As far as Georgia Tech football goes, I kinda expected a rough transition year this year. A complete changing of systems pretty much guarantees that.

But after that .... you guys will be tough. I don't see how you could be IN Atlanta, with the academic reputation you have, and NOT be able to find crazy athletic kids to suit up for you.

I will say this -- Packer and Durham (but mainly Packer) constantly pound the drum that Miami, Florida State and Virginia Tech HAVE to be good, for the ACC to be perceived as strong. And that's not wrong ... BUT ... I would posit that Georgia Tech could EASILY become a team that carries the reputation for the conference, given what I mentioned above.

Add history, with proximity to VERY fertile recruiting grounds, and the quality of school you have, and it won't be long for the Yellow Jackets to be a power on the grid iron.

As a Louisville fan, we don't have fertile recruiting grounds in our back yard. We don't have a history like Tech (or Pitt, or a lot of schools in this conference). We just have desire ... and that can only take you so far. We have to work hard to overcome those things. Maybe in time, we can develop a history that works for us.

But you guys have it .... so just hang in there. I think good times are in your near future.

Wes Durham is a Ga. Tech alum. He did radio play by play for them until 2013. He then did radio play by play for the Atlanta Falcons. I'm not sure. Is he still working for the Falcons? His father, Woody Durham, was a UNC alum and did play by play radio for UNC for about 30 years. I'm old enough to remember Woody as a local sports reporter for WFMY-TV in Greensboro before he went to work for UNC!

Wes is actually an Elon Alumn. He was the voice of the Vanderbilt Commodores and Gerogia Tech. He is now the voice of the Falcons and does play by play for ACC games on ESPN.

RE: Really warming up to Packer & Durham on AACN
Looked it up after the The Perfect Storm this week of Citadel and Pastner.

Baseball hasn't won a regional since 2006. Basketball hasn't had a winning conference record since 2003. Football hasn't ended the season ranked since 2014. These aren't exceptionally high standards.

Todd Stansbury needs to put product on the field somewhere -- ANYWHERE -- **ANY** field type!!! -- worth cheering for. And it needs to happen now. Hopefully the complete staff overhaul on baseball (which led to the #4 recruiting class) will see baseball finally get out of its own g****** way for the first time in over a decade. If not ... well ... my blood lust for rolling heads only grows in scope and depth.

I like that they debuted the ACC Legends on the show. The ACC should let them break this sorta news on a regular basis.
