2019 FBS Coaching Hot Seat
Which coaches have to meet or exceed expectations in order to survive?

Some of my picks:

Clay Helton, USC - too much talent not to be a title contender
Lovie Smith, Illinois - needs to make a bowl
Chad Morris, Arkansas - PigFans are getting restless
Kalani Sitake, BYU - being #3 in the state of Utah doesn't sit well
Chris Ash, Rutgers - like Lovie, needs to make a bowl

RE: 2019 FBS Coaching Hot Seat
Any head coach's risk of being fired depends on the contract and the school or donor willingness to pay whatever buyout they'd have to pay. That's one reason why the coaches who are most at risk are those who have a relatively low buyout and/or have lots of donors willing to pay to get rid of the guy.

By the "lots of donors willing to pay to get rid of the guy" criterion, Clay Helton is definitely #1 on the list and Gus Malzahn is #2. Willie Taggart might be #3. Matt Luke belongs on there somewhere because it's likely his buyout is not that high.

Morris isn't on the hot seat unless the season is just an unmitigated disaster. It's just Year 2.

Taggart is going to be fine as well. His bosses understand the absolute **** show he walked in to.

I think they badly want to give him the benefit of the doubt but if they go 5-7 again that might be it. That's simply inexcusable at FSU

Justin Fuente of VT might be on the hot seat. Another losing season, or missing a bowl, on the tails of many players leaving the program, and Bud Foster retiring.... the fans might have the torches and pitchforks out.

Clay Helton will survive if he at least improves things over last year. I think he has a good offensive staff.

I think Bobby Wilder will be gone after this season at ODU as well as Bob Davie at UNM.

The one coach in FBS I'm most confident won't be returning is Tony Sanchez of UNLV. Don't know how he's not already gone.

Under normal circumstances, absolutely. But he’s a third generation black bear and lifer who was specifically put in that seat to clean up a mess. He will be allowed to coach out his contract or, at worse, have his final year bought out. Don’t be at all surprised to see him turn around and accept a co-OC position with them right after effectively being fired either.

We had a little discussion about Lovie over on the B1G board. https://csnbbs.com/thread-880500.html. AD has given vote of confidence but it's really difficult to see Lovie (or Ash for that matter) getting to 6 wins. Most plausible way for Illinois to make it is to got 3-0 in con-conference (Akron, UConn, E. Michigan), beat Rutgers and then steal one from somebody to get to 5 so they can *MAYBE* get to a bowl via APR. Yes Lovie has had a huge rebuilding job but he has gotten them back to not completely and utterly terrible (like Purdue pre Brohm). He's not the person to get them any further.

As for Ash, he's got UMass, BC & Liberty in the non-com. At Iowa, host Minnesota, at Illinois for their west cross overs and then everyone in the east. While they probably don't go winless, that is more likely than them getting to a bowl game. Question is, do they have the cash to buy out Ash?

Harbaugh. Especially if Michigan takes another hit within the conference before Ohio State.

It’s not that he’s in the deepest of ****. But, hurt his feelings and bruise his ego enough, back to the pro’s he goes. Very thin-skinned, imo, and any feedback would be a big shot at the guy.

No doubt, who cares who he is...we know he won’t be Bo. So, time to move on?

Drinkwitz beating UNC to start the year 3-0 ain't helping Morris. Eli was an assistant at Alma and then with Gus at Springdale and Auburn. Gus ditched him at AState and Harsin kept him and before the year was out had taken over play calling. Then went to Boise State and NC State before being HC at App.

Drink has fans in Arkansas, especially in NW Arkansas. There's going to be a drumbeat for him. It's already been pointed out that in one-fourth of a season he has more career wins over P5 than Morris.

Dang! Morris better not go winless in SEC again.

RE: 2019 FBS Coaching Hot Seat
At the top of my list...

1A. Jim Harbaugh - Can't win when it counts and hasn't even played in a B1G Chip game. You have Michigan fans, alumni and former players embarrassed after the beat down in Wisky. Not good in Ann Arbor.

1B. Chip Kelly - The win at Washington St is not enough to take him off the hot seat. The schedule remains brutal and he's 4-12 overall I believe thus far. This was supposed to be a home run hire...

3. Chad Morris - He's 18-34 at Arkansas thus far and is 0-fer in the SEC [0-9]. And folks thought Bret Bielema was a bad match...EDIT - he's 18-34 overall [SMU] and 4-12 at Arkansas. Why the heck was he hired in the first place?
