SEC Week One
Football is finally back!

Thursday:
Texas State @ A&M

Saturday:
Toledo @ UK
Ole Miss @ Memphis
Mississippi St vs Louisiana (New Orleans)
Alabama vs Duke (Atlanta)
South Carolina vs North Carolina (Charlotte)
Georgia St @ Tennessee
Portland State @ Arkansas
UGA @ Vandy
Georgia Southern @ LSU
Oregon vs Auburn (Arlington, TX)
Missouri @ Wyoming

Mostly a bunch of snoozers, but I will definitely be tuned into that Oregon/Auburn game to see how both of those teams look.

Gamecock: tell 'em to pick 'em.

Will go out on a limb and pick one SEC team to be upset: Memphis over Ole Miss.

Of course ignoring that Memphis is favored by 5.5/6 points.

I know the national media is dogging SC hard this offseason because of the pitiful bowl performance, but I actually don't expect the UNC game to be close. From everything I've heard from sources that work for the team, the focus has been laser sharp all camp. If the line was -16.5 I think I'd still take SC to cover.

Agreed - I expect the Gamecocks to blow out the Tar Heels. UNC has been soft since shortly after Mack Brown left, and it will take more than one off-season to fix that, IMO.

Never believe anything Muschamp says. He's the best B.S.'er among SEC head coaches. I think South Carolina should win, but it is the first game and key turnovers could be the difference. Most opening contests between P5 schools turn out close because Defense gels before offense. The same will be true in the Oregon / Auburn game.

He does hide stuff, and it is frustrating.

However, minus about 1.5 games last season he has done a pretty good job rebuilding the program. This should be his best team at SC by far and I hope he can put it all together to quiet a lot of the criticism.

I get that a lot of people have had their minds made up on him from day one, though, and it's up to the team to go out there and win games.

If UNC wins, Muschamp will have butt blisters from the hot seat immediately. No Belk Bowl repeat.

RE: SEC Week One
Well we finally know why Ole Miss officials agreed to sell alcohol for the last 3 home games this season. They're going to need it. Their defense has some good plays, but they look woeful. They might easily be the worst team in the SEC this year.

Here's hoping they show some life in the 2nd half.

Bentley's quarterbacking & Muschamp's coaching proved otherwise. Not happy, but not shocked.

Well the dead weight of the SEC all went belly up today. Ole Miss (no talent and not much of a coach), Tennessee all hype and no coaching. And Muschamp refused to take advantage of a turnover with an 11 point lead by going to ultra conservative play calling instead of stepping on the neck of his opponent and punted when he needed half a yard and cost his team the game.

Ole Miss is just in a bad spot. But there is no excuse for Tennessee and South Carolina to have such craptastic programs.

Deficits for South Carolina:
Poor Secondary Coverage
Poor Tackling
The OC went away from play calls that worked and kept trying to do those thing which didn't and that's what we call stupid.
Muschamp robbed his team of momentum on 3 occasions at least: just before half time, failure to attack after the turnover with 11 point lead, and failure to go on 4th & 3. All three decisions showed no confidence in his team.

Tennessee Deficits:
Strength and Conditioning
Blocking Techniques
Tackling Techniques
No play calls that built on strengths or took advantage of weaknesses.
And what seemed to me to be no emotional energy at all.

Yeah, Memphis was a better team than Ole Miss. Tennessee looked like a mess. South Carolina blew their game. And FSU is far from the upper echelon of the ACC.
Mississippi State and Kentucky did what they had to do. Arkansas beat Portland State, but not looking dominant.

Hopefully tonight, there will be much more entertaining SEC games.

I didn't get Memphis over Ole Miss though or Wyoming over Missouri.

RE: SEC Week One
Well War Damn Eagle! Its always nice to get some Duck! Seriously though Oregon is a very solid team. Auburn had a very young QB who found some confidence in the 2nd half. We just made one more play.

Takeaway's on the day:

I sure as hell hope we get to eventually go divisionless. The West did very well today with Ole Miss just getting started too late to finish ahead.

The East sucks buckets with the exceptions of the same three we had last year, Georgia, big gap, Kentucky & Florida. Missouri actually played a capable team. Tennessee is an absolute dumpster fire and Georgia State has something going on positive. As long as Muschamp is at South Carolina they are going to lose big games like the one today. Vandy played as well as they could tonight against a really strong Georgia team.

But watch out for L.S.U. they came out aroused and dominated a decent Georgia Southern team.

Mizzou went into that game all full of themselves, and Wyoming just remembered getting hammered at Columbia last year. Bryant threw into double and even triple coverage all night. He made a lot of smart passes as well. Those red zone turnovers killed us. I think he will be fine though. The Cowboys came to do business, and did. The MWC might be the most competitive conference this season.

University of South Carolina football news.

Jake Bentley, QB, declared to have a foot injury and is out at least for 6 weeks, maybe all season. Ryan Hilinski will be the starter. Bentley is the son of an assistant coach.
