His mom is a Rice grad so there's your Rice connection.

That's a tough blow for the Colts and the NFL. He turns 30 in a couple of weeks but that's still pretty young for NFL quarterbacks generally.

His dad is the commissioner.

Seems unlikely since he is retiring because of his never-ending injury and pain cycle over the past few years.

Didn't Rice make his final 3 before he committed to Stanford? If memory serves, Rice was also one of the few schools to offer RGIII a scholarship as a QB (many colleges offered him as a DB) and Rice was also one of the few schools to offer Baker Mayfield out of high school. You can almost write an alternate history of Rice football...

This is not the 1st or the last early retirement in the NFL. The sport is dieing. It isn't safe and can't be made safe. Youth participation is declining and will continue to do so. It will be interesting to see which sports capitalize on what should be an massive influx of young boys and their parents looking for athletic avenues.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's dying but it's certainly affected some athletic plans starting from the younger generations. I actually think it would be a shame if younger kids didn't play football at all, even if meant parents pushed them towards another sport. For one thing, I believe most wouldn't play any sport which would probably help lead to less healthy and fit kids (participating in e-sports is going to lead to a lot more obesity IMO). And secondly, even if football is inherently more dangerous than some other sports, at least kids who play youth football do participate in other sports for the most part. Some of those other sports (soccer, tennis, volleyball, basketball, golf, swimming, baseball) really try to get the kids to focus on that one sport only - especially if they prove themselves to be a good athlete. And the rise and proliferation of youth club teams is out of control.

Another note on Luck's retirement. Apparently, he uses his twitter feed to write his thoughts in the guise of a Civil War Soldier (not sure which side he was fighting for, but his handle is @captandrewluck). This was his tweet after he retired.

Dearest mother —
The quill has never felt more heavy. I have made the decision to holster my sidearm permanently. I shall battle no more. The decision is difficult, but, as the hogs taught me, I must be true to myself. I am coming home to care for you and the farm.

sadly, it is youth sports overall. Just like everything, the money got too big and just like the saying on power, big money corrupts everything.

Families are bankrupting themselves to get Sally a softball scholarship that won't be there.

The Colts are not going to attempt to recoup 24 million+ from him. 12 million for pro-rated signing bonus *and* 12 million 2019 roster bonus paid March of this year.

Holy smikey the Colts are going to take it in the shorts moneywise on this; and in cap hit. Not to mention Luck leaving them high and dry so far into the pre-season.
