It was the first time that a college had sold the naming rights to a facility, since back then facilities were usually named after important faculty. It was stupid for them to allow Carrier to have its name on the Dome permanently. This idea was new to college but it wasnt new to professional sports facilities, so they should have been aware that these things shouldnt be in perpetuity. Still though, they made the deal, they should honor it by keeping the name Carrier somewhere in the name, while also selling the naming rights to some other entity. Example== The BlueCross Carroer Dome or the Wegmans Carrier Dome, or Wegmans Dome at Carrier Field.

There's an even worse deal out there: Coors paid only $15 million to have the Denver ballpark named Coors Field in perpetuity.

I doubt the Rockies would ever try what Syracuse is trying. Seems likely that anyone who dared to get in a lawsuit with Coors in Colorado would wind up getting crushed by the courts.

That was an awesome deal for Coors. Especially considering the $15 million didn't make a dent in the construction costs.

I know "Carrier" refers to the HVAC company but that's not what I think of when I hear the name. Much like when I hear "Dean Dome" I don't think of Dean Smith. The names have been around so long that they don't have an impact. Maybe Carrier should pony up some more money and change the name to Carrier Côr Dome.

Maybe I am being unrealistic, but I like the idea that when you name a new stadium, it should keep that name forever. The pro stadiums that have had 4 different names in the last 20 years just confuses everybody.

At some point a team just has to say the money is just not worth all the confusion caused from constantly changing the stadium name.

Tough to turn down $1 million/year or more when all you have to do for the money is hang a name on the stadium. Some of the more recent naming rights deals for pro ballparks/stadiums/arenas are for more than $10 million/year.

It's a different story if you're talking about putting a new name on a historic building, as opposed to selling naming rights from the time the building opened.

I think of Dean Smith too. But the Carrier Dome, I started hearing about it in the early 80's and had no idea why it was called the Carrier Dome. I was in high school back then. I was in my late 20's when I figured out the Dome was called the Carrier Dome because of the air conditioning company.

Wasn't the dome built without Air Conditioning?

YEP! Thats the irony. The New DOME is currently undergoing renovation as we speak and it will have air conditioning.

Carrier told SU: we can either pay you cash or put in AC

SU took the cash.

Well, since Carrier signed on in the 70's and Cuse was only bad from 2002-2017, I think Carrier got their money's worth.

No, I meant putting their name on a building which DOESN'T HAVE AIR CONDITIONING!

That's as silly as naming a stadium after a pet store and only allowing dogs in the building one day each year!

Enron Field didn't work anymore.

Sounds like a really bad approach by Syracuse. What message does that send to donors?

I've always thought of it as the Carrier Dome. The "dome" is the Houston Astrodome.
