Wow Division II football in the Pacific time zone is nearly non-existent.

Really gives you a good idea of just how little sense the GNC makes. Montana and the South Dakota are about as close as South Dakota is to South Carolina

RE: Found this map on NCAA.org
You can scratch Humboldt State (Far North of California) from the list, as they just ended football. Dixie State left the RMAC and is transitioning to FCS Independent.
You can see what an island Azusa Pacific is on. 669 mile drive to Western New Mexico, 750 miles to Colorado Mesa, 937 mile to Western Oregon. This is why they are a good target for the WAC to move up. Dixie State is 365 miles away (bad but better), plus Cal Poly, UC Davis, Sac State and Southern Utah are all closer than any D-II school.
D-III is even more dead than D-II in the West excepting a LA Basin cluster and Pacific Northwest cluster in the Willamette and a couple in Washington. Nothing in NorCal, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Montana, nor the plain states form North Dakota to Oklahoma except Nebraska Wesleyan of Lincoln on the eastern edge of that state (they play in adjacent Iowa).
The pressure will be huge on APU to move up soon. Football is too much of their identity to drop it.

MSU to USD 13 hours.
Except Montana St to SUU 10 hrs and MSU to NAU 14 and a half hours.
Montana St to UND 11 and a half NDSU 10 and a half.
Montana St to Sacramento about 15 hours UC-Davis same
Montana St to Portland St 11 and a half hours.
Spokane to Flagstaff 19 hours.
Spokane to Fargo 17 hours
So the Biog Sky also does not make sense.

Dixie State has shown that there is a need for independent FCS school in the west. A bunch of schools signed DSU for future games. Besides playing each other in WAC Oly sports, DSU and APU could be their "rivalry" game at the end of the season.

So the Biog Sky also does not make sense.
The Dakota schools are not in the Big Sky.
The Big Sky has 11 full members. All are in the mountain and pacific time zones.
Besides those 11, there are only 2 other schools in the entire west that play scholarship FCS football (UC Davis and Cal Poly SLO, who play Big Sky football). There are not enough FCS schools in the west to fill two conferences.

There is - which is why NAU quickly signed Dixie to a 8 game home and home series.
Having another western FCS for OOC would be great. Even better if CWU would go to the WAC as well.

Worth looking at the FCS map vs the FBS map.
It really should make it clear why FCS was viable for Idaho and is not for NMSU. The Aggies can't save a nickel on travel in FCS. They play FBS or they don't play football.

Scholarship football not in D1.
Western Oregon
Eastern Oregon
Southern Oregon
Azusa Pacific
Simon Fraser
Central Washington
Colorado Mesa
Western Colorado
College of Idaho
Arizona Christian
Ottawa Arizona
Western New Mexico
Lewis and Clark Valley in Idaho have an association status with the NCAA for football which games do count to help the west coast schools for games. The majority of their players come from Lewis and Clark State.

Everytime I see a Map like this I want all of the DII teams west of Interstate 35 to be in DI and FCS. Then the rest of D2 and D3 can be one. It will never happen, but the Map looks much better.

The Southland would be their best bet. A bit of an outlier, but travel would be better than in the WAC or Big Sky.
