Seahawks defeat Northeastern at home, 3-1.

Phillip Goodrum's scored his 4th goal of the season in the first half and Gabriel Cabral added another with under 9 minutes left in the 2nd to secure the victory. NU got on the board late on a PK, but UNCW answered with a free kick goal by Danny Reynolds from just outside the box.

UNC was ranked # 14 in the Sep 23 United Soccer Coaches Poll. However, they lost last Friday to Duke and will move down in the next poll. Top Drawer Soccer has them receiving votes in their Top 25 but not ranked.

Hawks and Coastal played to a 0-0 tonight in a midweek non conference game. Going into this game Coastal had loss 4 in a row including a home loss to William and Mary. Not a the result this team was looking for but ultimately conference play is what matters.

HUGE win in OT. 1st place by themselves now. Only team with no losses, so win one of their last 2 conference games and the wrap up first place.

You got 1 point in the Coaches Poll. The NCAA called you "North Carolina-Wilmington."

Hawks clinched the #1 seed tongiht with a 3-1 win vs Drexel and will have home field advantage throughout the CAA Tournament. This team has rebounded very nicely after that rough start in Charleston

Like an old, bad, broken record.

One thing I know for sure is that if UNCW wants to be referred to as "UNCW" (as UCLA, UNLV, IUPUI, etc are) and not any one of the dozen or so possbile alternatives (UNC-W, UNC-Wilmington, North Carolina-Wilmington, etc) the people at the very top of the school need to:

1) Insist that everyone who is paid to produce anything for the university refer to it as "UNCW" and nothing else (which is not always the case now) and that they refrain from the seemingly compulsive need to 'explain' what "UNCW" means after using the term - which is usually the case now. For instance:About UNCW Athletics right here, after using the term 'UNCW' the atletic department leads by effectively "explaining" that it means "The University of North Carolina at Wilmington".

We just called ourselves by two different names - so how can we complain when someone else does, too?

Now check out, for instance, the UCLA site: UCLA Athletic Communications. Funny how they don't feel the same self-generated "need" to explain what UCLA stands for, and funny how no one else does either.

2) The people at the very top need to insist that others refer to us as UNCW and nothing else. A business man/chancellor like we have now should understand the importance of branding and when outfits like the NCAA refer to us as anything other than UNCW he needs to pick up the phone and call them out on it. The NCAA, ESPN, CBS, and the New York Times Style Book are all over the place and inconsistent in their "standards" in how they refer to schools - they can be persuaded to refer to us as we prefer to be referred.

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte insisted that they be referred to as simply "Charlotte" by these same outfits. ESPN now lists them as the "Charlotte 49ers" and they list us as the "UNC Wilmington Seahawks". You wonder why that is? I think I know.

Hawks close out the regular season with a double OT 1-0 win. Phillip Goodrum with a penalty kick goal allows the Seahawks to finish conference play without a loss
