ESPN: The 50 best college football programs over 150 years
App comes in at 34 while Georgia Southern comes in at 48. Pretty remarkable considering Southern's relatively short history of having a football program compared to the others on the list.

Link

The formula
Basic Model
Dominance, 20% -- number of National Championships Peak Strength, 20% -- winning percentage for best 50 seasons in program history
Since integration, 30% -- winning percentage over the past 50 seasons (1969-2018)
Early Modern, 20% -- winning percentage over the middle 50 seasons (1919-1968). Mostly pre-integration and included some games against non-college teams
Pre-modern, 10% -- winning percentage over the first 50 seasons (1869-1918) *mostly pre-standardization of current rules and many games against non-college teams

Adjustments
National championships below the FBS level count at 50%
National championships before the poll era (1936) count at 50%
Winning percentages when a team was not in Division I are reduced by 10%

"the Mountaineers made the leap to the FBS. Some fans still argue whether that was a good idea."

I haven't met any of these fans.

It's a good read for the off season. They could have at least mentioned that GS had made the jump to FBS but I'll take it.

Yeah, I'm with you there. There probably are some still hiding out there but they're very quiet these days. If our wheel runs off in the next few years, we'll probably hear from them again. The fans I know personally who had reservations about the move have all bought in at this point and conceded the move was a good one.

Even more remarkable GS is there considering starting in the 1980's when the era of money and TV was getting cranked up and being within 250 miles from 5 powerhouse teams on the list. All credit to Erk Russell, the greatest coach blocked from the hall of fame because of the 10 year head coach requirement.

There are some...

Many (few) who still miss FCS have the qualifier of "but" now, due to the success from 2015 to 2018. If App, for one reason or another, sinks into mediocrity you will likely see the FCS'ers come back out.

We had our share crawl out from their caves during 2016-2017. They had just been waiting for the moment to scream how awful of an idea it was to move to FBS...all while ignoring 14/15.

If we had any semblance of a competent coaching staff in 2016/17, we would have carried all that momentum over from the Fritz era. The entire Summers hire is even more puzzling than 12/5/15. Probably the worst coaching job I've ever even heard of...the deltas from 14/15 to 16/17 are mind boggling.

If you guys struggle during the coaching transition, you'll have your share of FCS-ites coming out from the woodwork, I'm sure.

Why would anyone prefer to be in the FCS?

I haven't seen them since 2014.

Also 34/50 is pretty damn good.

You can’t spell FeCeS without FCS.

And this is why I tell people we were in a different class than the rest of FCS and it was time to move on.

A lot of why teams like Yale and Harvard are on this list (and so high) is because of what they were back in the old days of football, not because they've maintained that level of performance.

You won 2 Div-II titles in the 80s and have a .570 historical record (47th in current FBS teams).

DII days don't count strong enough. Still one of the strongest programs around.

I did miss the mighty and powerful Ragin Cajuns. From the rage page in 2013 you'd think App and GS were going to bring the Sun Belt down to DIII level.

Troy had a 79% win percentage during their decade-stay in 1AA. Since segregation, Troy has had a 64% win percentage with 2 Div II national titles and 16 conference titles. Plus the NAIA national title from 1968 if that counts?
