UC Merced is indeed surprising. But it is by no means "remote", only someone from a true urban environment would think that. It's practically in the middle of the state, easy to get to on good roads, about 3 hours from the Bay area and 5 from LA, and Merced has a population of around 100k. But there really isn't anything to do there except maybe go to Yosemite. Which is why it's surprising that it's on this list. When students are bored, they drink.

I disagree. Provo is a quiet college town & we still dominate these lists. Culture matters.

In Merced's case, it's just a new school without much of a greek scene. It makes an effort to attract 1st gen, working class kids. IIRC 1st gen kids make up like 75% of the student body. So they don't have a lot of preconcieved ideas about the college experience.

I'm curious about MTSU. Like Texas State, I don't know much about them. But nothing in their profile screams 'sober'. How did they end up on this list?

Even IL Tech makes sense. as engineering schools tend to be kind of nerdy.

MTSU is. Two of my kids went there and I can assure you that alcohol was consumed.
