RE: PFF: 2019 Starting QB Rankings
What am I missing on J'Mar Smith that would make him the 34th best QB? As a full-time starter he is a 56.5% passer and a QB rating 124 with 31 tds and 15 ints. As a fr. I thought he was going to be a great QB but seems like he has got worse every season. Now maybe that could be line play or not enough good enough skill players. But I dont see him as top 5 in CUSA

If Jack Abraham had a stronger arm (and an offensive line) I would say he is capable of putting up Fine #s. #59 is probably fair for now. Sorry but I think he is a better QB than J'Mar.

RE: PFF: 2019 Starting QB Rankings
QB's are only as good as their oline, which is why no one is really super high on Abraham. Can't blame them. But I'm super pumped about having a new oline coach, an infusion of about 4-5 linemen this past signging class (some jucos, some hs) and I'm also super pumped about the new OC. Running offense is going to be muuuuuuuch improve this year.

All the QB’s are worse, Who are these other QB’s and what makes you think are better than Jmar.

I know one thing Abraham is not even in the same stratosphere as Jmar. I have seen sided by side comparisons, not even close between those two.

Jmar probably has the strongest arm in CUSA

Now remind me who won last and last and last year?

I know, but your guy has not impressed me as the 34th QB in the land. I guess we will see again this year. If Abraham is even the guy taking the field by that game.
BTW, several teams may have guys with stronger arms that don’t play. Strong arm doesn’t equal games won.

The article makes note that his receivers dropped 79 passes last year. That's about a 25-point swing in completion percentage. I think they were giving him the benefit of the doubt in that case.

CUSA did have a down year in QBs and I guess there are question marks on all but UNT and I would add in FIU(James Morgan) and to a degree the UAB qb.

So I guess it would be hard to get 5, other CUSA QBs, preseason. I thought this kid showed so much promise as a Fr, then it hasnt panned out for him over the last 2 seasons. The Western game from last season, J'Mar Smith, looked awful and missed a ton of easy throws.

That along with a bad line can make a QB look bad. I wasnt impressed by him last season. I thought he had all or enough tools as a Fr to be one of the best QBs in the conference at some point. That was 2016 when CUSA really had some great college QBs. So I was basing my thoughts off that

RE: PFF: 2019 Starting QB Rankings
Yeah, if JMar can get above 60% completion percentage, he might move into the 'good' category. He has not proven himself to be consistent. He also doesn't have much help. There is no game-breaker on that roster. Holtz wins with defense and vanilla offense. He's rebuilding his DLine, but that's easier to do than develop a QB.

I don’t know. Steven Williams has a cannon for an arm. He regularly overthrew his receiver by 10-15 yards or else a bullet right at their feet.

His lack of arm strength won't matter. He has a high completion percentage. He isn't going to the NFL, but is a good college system QB. We will see how he does with some actual time to throw and a good run game behind him this year. The offensive line was so bad last year. You could tell when we couldn't get any push on even Jackson State. We will know in the first game if they have improved at all.

I saw him throw some weak deep balls last year and some that resulted in int's. I hope he proves me wrong about his arm, if not I'll be calling for Whatley. We may end up with a 2 QB system anyway.

RE: PFF: 2019 Starting QB Rankings
Chuck 'n duck last year. Abraham had a short passing game, but that was it. No time for deep patterns and no running game to make the defense honest. Whatley was more mobile, but less accurate. This Spring, they both looked capable to me.

I'm looking forward to the double-teams Watkins draws. McLaurin, Adams, and/or Jones are going to make teams pay for that. I can't remember us being this deep at wideout.

Abraham has exploitable weaknesses that Whatley lacks. Whatley was such a raw, unproven kid last year, though. The true question to me isn’t which of these guys is better. It is if this new staff can do a better job developing QBs than the last staff did.

Does anyone other than the UNT fans honestly believe that there are only 4 QBs in all of FBS football that are better than Mason Fine this year? Seriously?

Name them. I can’t. However, I just focus on team ball when watching Non-cusa football. Don’t care to remember individuals.

ODU has not settled on a starting QB yet, and by all reports, it may well be game time on the 31st before we know who it is. That said -- it seems unlikely that it will be Steven Williams, with many believing that the current front runner is Stone Smartt - a 6'4" JUCO transfer from California.

Rice also has not settled on a starter.
