UC vs. OSU football: should the games continue?
I understand UC's visitor ticket allotment for the game is sold out and lots more Bearcats will help fill the stands. This game creates interest for both schools now. Win or lose this one, should a series arrangement of some kind continue?

And given the opportunity, would it be in UC's best interest to seek a commitment for a return home game periodically? I'm sure OSU would specify it be played at PBS. As a season ticket holder, I don't have a problem with that given both the incremental revenue and exposure.

We need quality regional matchups, pre-conference, and Miami (OH) doesn't cut it anymore in that regard. If OSU doesn't want to continue the series, I'm fine with that and we simply move on building an excellent program.

Thoughts?

I like the idea of the series, but there is no way we'll get a regular return game. Best case scenario with them is probably a 3-2 with one of our two games being played in PBS, so basically what we had previously, and they'd just buy out the game at Nippert. Only way we change that is if we end up in a different conference or in the Top 20 every year for the next half decade.

Frankly, I'd rather play Louisville or UK, home and home on rotating basis. Alas, those schools aren't interested in that.

I'd do a 3-2 setup in a heartbeat provided the first game was at Nippert and the 4th game was at PBS. I wouldn't play them exclusively in Columbus anymore. It will never happen that way though.

RE: UC vs. OSU football: should the games continue?
Honestly I don’t see the benefits at this point. Would rather play a home game this year vs Ohio than play at Ohio State which is a likely loss. UC has one goal every year which is to win all their non-conference games and then win the league. Doing that locks in a NY6 bowl game. Any loss including one at Ohio State hurts the resume. While winning would be huge it really doesn’t put UC closer to the NY6 bowl game because the Cats still need to win the conference and the beat UCLA, Marshall, and Miami.

I was thinking money plays a part in this but UC is evidently not getting much for this trip.

Eleven Warriors obtained the contracts for all of Ohio State’s upcoming non-conference games, as well as each of the Buckeyes’ non-conference games dating back to 2015, through a public records request under the Freedom of Information Act.

According to those contracts, Ohio State is set to pay $1.4 million to Florida Atlantic, $375,000 to Cincinnati and $1.3 million to Miami (Ohio) for its three home non-conference games in 2019. The game against Cincinnati was originally scheduled to be played in 2012, but was later rescheduled to 2018, and again rescheduled to 2019 (the Buckeyes also hosted the Bearcats in 2014 as part of the original agreement between the two schools).

I don't see OSU scheduling UC in any major sport on a regular basis. They've got the state believing they're the only alternative to "big time college athletics" in the state. Why embolden little brother the chance to shine on a semi-annual basis.

Should UC win in a couple of weeks it could become the "new" problem between the schools like '61 & 62 created in basketball.

I see the same comments by UC fans in regards to other local programs like Dayton in basketball.

I’d play them every year if we could, but they’re the big boy so they get to choose. I reckon we’ll play them a couple of times every decade or so. Maybe they come down to PBS once every 25 years. They’ve got the power, we get what we get.

We were a dropped pass away from beating them at PBS. This year, on paper, is the only other legitimate chance we have to beat them. If UC can't pull it off this year, I'd say give it up until they get into a better conference. Basketball is a little different. We should have stomped them this year and didn't, but I want to play them as often as possible.

BTW, this makes me want to puke:

A win over OSU this year and an undefeated season or 11-1, 10-2 with a NY6 bowl would completely revitalize the program. Houston's win over Oklahoma did wonders for them as did Boise. UCFs undefeated seasons have put them on the map. Make no mistake, the games matter toward building a program, we need more chances for big statements like this

Those big wins were not road games.

Like it of not, big state has owned the football programs in Ohio for about a century. UC and a strong MAC team like Toledo probably have the best chance to knock them off, but it is usually an uphill battle due to depth and home field advantage and B10 officials.

Unfortunately, lately big state has not had many down years to capitalize. We all know after the PBS squeeker they are never leaving Columbus again except on the friendliest of conditions (i.e. playing a downtrodden Akron in Cleveland).

I could see the game more when UC was in the B.E. Now in the American, it is a tougher jump in competition and depth depending on the coach. I would like to see UC get games with teams that they can more likely win. Northwestern, IU, UofL, WVA and Pitt type teams from this region and others like UCLA, BYU and Oregon State. UC has done well with those type teams and would be more likely to get a 1-1 instead of a 1 off type deal.

Wasn't this game part of a 4 game contract that started with the PBS game in 2002? We played in 2006, OSU bought out a UC home game in 2007/2008 and moved it to 2014 in Columbus and then the last game moved again to 2019?

I assume the payout is lower because the deal is much older.

RE: UC vs. OSU football: should the games continue?
SHOULD UC vs. OSU be a "regular series" (i.e. played every year)? HELL YES. It "should be" a regular series, played home-and-home, every season. Other states have even gone so far as forcing the issue...Kentucky comes to mind...compelling the two major State universities to play.

WILL it happen? Not a chance in hell. First, were the State of Ohio attempt to intervene in the situation, UC would be forced to play the majority (at the least) of the games up in Columbus and the remainder of the games at PBS. West Virginia forced Marshall and WVU to play a 7 game series, and at least two of those were guaranteed at Marshall; you'd NEVER see The Ohio State University ever agree to play a single down at Nippert. (The West Virginia terms of agreement broke the 7 games series down into two smaller sub-series, @WVU, @Marshall, @WVU...then @ the winner of the best of the first three (WVU) / @WVU, @ Marshall, then @ the winner of the best of 7 (WVU)… It was at least creative and gave Marshall at least the "opportunity" to host four of the seven games.)

I agree with the sentiment that UC will get the chance to play the Buckeyes once-or-twice every ten years...all up in Columbus. And yes...like Brian Kelly said, we ought to adopt the policy "We'll play them in a parking lot in Cleveland..." (A neutral site game in Cleveland might be worth considering.)

Good points. So UCF was criticized for its "weak" schedule playing low to mid-tier P5 teams the past couple of years. But maybe they had the right scheduling philosophy after all since it landed the Knights in prime time bowls where they earned a split with Auburn and LSU.

As far as getting in the best bowls goes, Any loss hurts more than a great win helps. If you look at the playoff teams over the years it's basically counting losses. When teams are even schedule/strength of wins can come into play...and G5 teams are always going to have a huge penalty, but if you want to know which P5 teams / ND make the playoff...count their losses.

Bolded, I think you're right about that. It's somewhat similar to basketball when Huggins was rebuilding and some of our fans were clamoring for more games with UK. Huggins and UC didn't need games with UK to build a Final Four team and a national title contender Kenyon's senior year and that whole UC/UK chatter went away.

Similarly, if Fickell does here what we believe he's capable of, we can have a high profile, ranked team and just tune out the chatter regarding OSU. I pretty much ignore them now so it won't be any different for me.

Not a good idea unless they accept a 3-2 or a 2-1 with games at Nip with no cancellations allowed.
