Kyle Harrell answers the need for speed on UAB defense
From Steve Irvine, published on Scarbinsky's blog...
(and I do like that partnership covering UAB football)

Clark & assistants seem to have a knack for finding different positions for players to make them even more productive.

Thats quite an interesting camp article. With all the talent thats been recruited at linebacker recently, once again a walkon is atop the depth chart midway through camp. Great eye for undervalued talent on this staff. Kudos to Kyle at this stage of camp, but he is about 20 pounds underweight to man that position for a full season. Ill be curious to see who all gets the playing time at that position after kickoff.

Interesting in the notes about today’s practice, they mention LB’s who had had a good camp so far and Harrell is not even among those mentioned.

Who knows? 16 days till kickoff.

The practice notes were about inside linebackers. Harrell is an outside linebacker.

I kinda expect situational, game-to-game playing time through the season...

Lol

Was expecting Oliver to make the jump, but guess he’s slowly coming along with the two true freshmen.

Remember Clark mention Harrell in a previous interview, totally took me by surprise weeks ago. The ol Crawford spot is pretty solid with Talan, Rayam, and McDonald unless we’ve moved guys around again.

Im wondering it its a combination of solid play from talented walkons and a challenge to other LBs and OLBs.

Our LB positions are pretty unique. Size isn't the end all be all. Heart and talent can get you on the field. Clark uses schemes and concepts. Those can change from year to year depending on personnel.

UAB's LB corps was identified as the top unit is CUSA recently. Of course, they also have UAB's QB position ranked #5 & WR at #13(of 14)..

Unit Rankings
Unit CUSA Rank
Offense 7
QB 5
RB 1
WR 13
OL 7
Defense 7
DL 11

Secondary 6

Every conference team tried to improve by recruiting additional new JUCO, transfer and HS talent since last season. I just hope our coaches succeeded at a better pace than the competition. We need these new guys to succeed for the Blazers to remain on top.

RE: Kyle Harrell answers the need for speed on UAB defense
Im a bit concerned about our limited pass rush options. Neither kelle Saunders or the other tall Juco defensive end, ?Shaakir Smith? made it to camp. Jordan Smith needs some other compadres. Not convinced we have enough depth there. The tall freshman, Alex W, should get some playing time if he has the body strength. He should be fast. ACC schools recruited him as a wr.
