Of course Trevor Lawrence should be a favorite to win it. I’m trying to think of other elite players that could possibly win it. I suppose ND’s Ian Book, Tua Tagliovala(sp?) and the Oklahoma QB should be in the conversation.

Oregon QB turned down being a top 5 draft pick (if not number 1 overall) to come back to school, so he'll be in the mix.

It's hard to win the Heisman when you start out the season being referred to as "the Oregon QB". Name recognition matters.

Plus ... very few people knew Lamar Jackson's name as the starting QB for Louisville as a sophomore until he exploded all over Syracuse on a week 2 Friday night game at Syracuse.

There's plenty of time to establish name recognition for the Heisman.

He'll be in the mix.

Lamar Jackson had the advantage of playing on the east coast. Oregon is in that media wasteland that is the Pacific Northwest. Whatever his name is, he better hope he has a big game against Auburn and that the Ducks stay in CFP contention. Publicity can be harder to come by out there.

I think the Heisman Trophy, the heavyweight champion and the Triple Crown winner are all vestiges of a bygone era.

I don’t think it matters that much anymore who wins the Heisman Trophy.

There have been so many mediocre players win it – especially over the past 20 years or so – that I could care less who wins that award.

Lawrence is as good a guess as anyone. It’s probably between the quarterback of Clemson and the quarterback of Alabama — and I’m fine with that because those are at least two good football players, not system guys.

Last year's Louisville season proves just how great Lamar Jackson was -- if all the national records he set aren't enough to prove that point. Dude carried the Cards. And covered up a lot of poor play, by a lot of players. And coaches.

Wasted that talent ....
