MyBB How is realignment affected if football is outlawed?
It's the elephant in the room that rarely comes up. If football is deem too unsafe to play organized, how does that change the landscape?

Well if it is deemed too unsafe for organized play don't you believe it would be too unsafe for disorganized play also?

And it won't be banned. We still have boxing.

But if it was banned I would buy season baseball tickets again and drop the expensive cable packages.

If football was banned, the whole college sports world, or indeed the whole sports scene in America, would collapse instantly and violently.

If football is banned it won’t be abruptly. By the time it gets to that point, multiple states will have banned it, and that after many schools have walked away from the sport voluntarily because of the issues surrounding it, either directly or indirectly (lack of interest). Which also means colleges and conferences will be working on long-term replacements for football.

Of course, the much more likely scenario is one where football is made dramatically safer, like the Roosevelt reforms.

There’s no point in talking about what won’t happen until 2100 or later

Football banned? For being unsafe?

Cigarettes are far more deadly, yet those are still legal.

And now there's a populist push for marijuana legalization. And other drugs. These things are far more unhealthy than football.

Football will never be banned.

It may decrease in popularity. But not for several more decades.

Amateurism for the collegiate athlete will collapse long before football does.

I don’t see an outright ban but I wouldn’t be surprised if rule changes designed to try to make the sport safer make the game unrecognizable 50 years from now.

I also anticipate that a lot of lower tier schools will drop the sport, particularly in left leaning regions and at far left leaning schools.

I'll play the game. Assuming that it got banned say in the 2030s, after everyone's GOR is up. ESPN/Fox/Amazon/CBS/NBC/etc. need content. They focus on soccer, baseball, and basketball, even hockey, and start promoting women's sports a little more.

Realignment still happens along the same lines - only the PAC-12 now has slightly more power because of soccer emphases. The SEC can now grab UNC and Duke without worry about Duke's football attendance. They could take Tech along with Texas without worry after Beard's 20 year reign as coach there. If Texas decides to go to the PAC-12, the SEC takes TCU for baseball and grabs Kansas for basketball.

The Pac-12 if they grab Texas/Tech doesn't have to worry as much, but if they don't they strongly consider Gonzaga.

The Big 10 reconsiders Syracuse/UConn/Pitt type schools.

This.

At least for the wealthiest programs, college football will be changed by the end of NCAA-style shamateurism much more than by any near-term decline in fan interest.

The top 3 college sports will be well balanced. Basketball, baseball and hockey. There will more schools adding baseball and hockey.

It would? Because we certainly wouldn't notice changes for the California + Hawaii league.

Probably not much, not sure why it would.

Tobacco, alcohol, weed, and other drugs are the province of adults. This is different. It's parents (and lawyers, politicians, insurers, school boards, weepy TV commntators) making a decision about the safety of kids. The data on CTE is relatively sparse. Soon it will be voluminous... and easily exploitable.

You may be right about the pace of the decline of football. Perhaps it happens gradually. The catalyst for a rapid demise of football could be some huge legal settlement over injuries in a youth football league. The insurers would have to protect themselves. The schoolboards, and local governments, might refuse to pay the freight for football liability. Supporters of football could be publicly accused of child abuse. (It would be fun to watch the politcal candidates walk that tightrope.)

More American boys have benefited from scholastic football than any other extracurricular activity. There is no more unifying or iconic rallying symbol for a school than the football team. But the tradition can no longer be taken for granted.

The economics of football seem to be massive, but they are minuscule in the ocean of American commerce. Do not worry, the gambling indusrty can adjust.

Football won't be banned, but it may* die a gradual death as more and more high schools, then colleges quit playing the game as it is currently played. If this happens, then the conference landscape will clearly be transformed and realignment will be basketball-based.

*and probably will, eventually

You forgot to add that: Akron would be invited to the Big 10.
