Who would be left?
Maine, Vermont, UNH, UMass, UMass-Lowell, UConn, CCSU URI and the big SUNY's are already there.
That is why the northeast needs more D1 public schools. Rowan football could help is one thing. With the private northeast schools dropped football? It hurt the schools who have football as they are now spread apart a bit. Merrimack and LIU helped, but it is not enough to fill in the rest who dropped football.

Well, the school the thread was created about. The rest of the NJAC was mentioned, those are all public northeast schools. I'm sure David has a list somewhere with big chunks of the MASCAC and Little East on it. Southern Connecticut is the only public left in the NE-10 I think.
Heck if you were starting from scratch, Maine's D-I sports would be at Southern Maine and not in Orono, but here we are.
Regardless, it's small privates like Merrimack, or weird "non-profits" like SNHU if you are looking for schools in the Northeast.
I don't consider NJ NE
Connecticut won't allow another DI program - they have designed their schools so they have DIII, DII, DI FCS and DI FBS - so the whole range is covered.
Didn't realize how many smallish public colleges each of the New England states have.
Besides the two conferences mentioned, much of the North Atlantic Conference are publics

Most on your list are state flagships that field mid-major sports programs at best. Even the mighty UConn has had to step away from the AAC and de-emphasize football because of out-of-control spending. Rowan is a second/third tier state school. The pecking order in NJ is Rutgers, big drop to NJIT and everybody else. Rowan had an angel donation that gave it a big endowment. That's great. Still NJ is a pro sports state - Philly in the south and NY in the north. There simply is no support for Rowan or any other NJ school to spend gobs of money leaving a low cost bus league to move up to D1. Hell, the two biggest sports schools, Rutgers and Seton Hall, have trouble attracting fans.

Have you ever been to the Northeast? It’s an honest question......

The only other UMass that could even potentially move up from Div III would be Boston, and they're having financial problems lately. UMass Dartmouth is too small.
The rest of the publics in new england are pretty small as well and couldn't really handle it. Most of the region is pretty private heavy.

RE: D3 Rowan University Could Go D1
Talking about Rowan and Universities in New Jersey. The most interesting article before most the merger of the University of Medicine and Dentistry New Jersey into Rutgers happened, is that one: https://www.njspotlight.com/stories/11/1027/2037/
one excerpt:
....The proposed University of New Jersey would have had three largely independent universities: The University of New Jersey-Central (36,700 students) based in New Brunswick and Piscataway was to include Rutgers-New Brunswick and the three UMDNJ units whose merger Christie just authorized. The University of New Jersey-North (21,400 students) was to include Rutgers-Newark, UMDNJ's Newark schools and University Hospital, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The relatively small University of New Jersey-South (5,600 students) was to get Rutgers-Camden and UMDNJ's School of Osteopathic Medicine.....
Unfortunately Rutgers got in the end most of UMDNJ and kept RU Newark and RU Camden. NJIT and Rowan could have been nearly be on par with Rutgers if the merger would had been made based solely on geography.
See here the outcome of the merger: https://www.nj.com/news/2013/06/welcome_...erger.html
Interesting tidbit: MLS-Team Philadelphia Union wanted first to build their mls-stadium on the campus of Rowan:

https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2010/01/2...un-estadio
And there is another research-university nearly nobody knows about in New Jersey with an enrollment of 20000 students: Montclair State University
