Who will be the next head coach to win first title? Penny mentioned.
THE X-FACTOR

"8. PENNY HARDAWAY, Memphis: To be completely honest, I am not quite sure where to put Penny on this list. The fact of the matter is that he has spent one year as a head coach at the college level. We don’t really know what to make of him as a head coach, and given the fact that this Memphis team is being wildly overranked heading into the season, there seems to be a good chance that the narrative on Penny could end up being that he’s a recruiter, not a coach, come the end of the season.

When that happens, remember this warning. And also remember that Penny landed two top ten recruits and seven top 100 players in his first real recruiting class, including a five-star from New York and a top 30 prospect that decommitted from Duke. He’s going to continue to land recruiting classes like this, and with the majority of this year’s No. 1 ranked class being two or three years players, I think everyone is a year early on the Memphis bandwagon.

We’ll see if all of that leads to a chance at winning a national title."

Dauster making bank trolling Memphis fans by steeply dropping the Tigers in his preseson poll for no real reason. And with comments like "this Memphis team is being wildly overranked".

RE: Who will be the next head coach to win first title? Penny mentioned.
Don't understand commentators placing more value on a rookie coach if he had been recruiting for a senior coach, than on a coach that has adapted, and succeeded, at consecutive levels of escalating talent and ability.

The only explanation I can think of is that these commentators are either friendly with, or former members, of the fraternity. And like most fraternities, outsider's and crashers are not welcome.

Penny crashed the frat party. He didn't carry anyone's water for them, he didn't bring in the coeds (recruits) for the upperclassmen (established coaches) to pick from. He didn't rise through regular procedures of seniority. He brought his own recruits to the party, and left with them. And took a couple of theirs too. If you are in a frat, and subscribe to their artificial social structure, you'd be pissed at the audacity of the affront to their entitlement to be served before newcomers get accepted.

The commentators whose ears are buried in the lips of the status quo coaches, some of whom former coaches wanting to return, empathize more with the entitled upperclassmen fratboys than with the outsider that carved his own path to the party, and didn't obey the unwritten rules that only they benefit from.

His message of crashing an exclusive elitist party should be shared more. It could be appealing to many fans of the sport, and of outsiders.

Depends on how you are ranking teams...

If you are ranking teams on talent alone...Memphis is underRanked.

If you are ranking teams on future performance I can see people hedging their bets because Penny is unproven, IMO that is fair.

How it that fair if it is a unknown? Hedging your bets means you play it both ways. Vegas has us 4th last time I looked at what is basically their top 10. Very doubtful anyone outside of their top ten wins national championship.

Previous history is always a guide.

Vegas sets odds based on where the money is coming in... obviously they were getting way too much money on Memphis so they moved the odds to stop Memphis bets

But after a while it becomes a better guideline than some money conference ass kissing basketball writer.

A true sign of a coach is if the team improves as the season progresses. Penny did that last year and I have no doubt he does it again.

The only thing they can knock us for is the whole “can Penny coach? “ That will be erased this year and then we really crash the blue blood party.

This train is gaining momentum......all aboard Tiger fans!!!

The "Can Penny (and staff) coach?" question was answered for me last year in the first game against Central Florida. 20-point win, and Tacko finished with 7 and 6. The scheme (Mike's game plan) counted on Maurice to hit 3's and draw the big man out on defense. Simple, effective strategy, well executed.

In Dauster's case, it's not just the ranking. He had us much higher - I think around 10th. Then dropped us all the way to 18 or 19. Then he comes in with lines like "wildly overranked".

Seems that he's found it more profitable to troll us.

The real proof. Taking the #160 ranked trash team he inherited comprised of only 1 player that any of the previous 5 coaches, or Penny, would have signed, added 3 sub 100 guards ( 2 of which were under 5'10), and finishing in the Top 60 with an NIT win.

Not to mention, played Top 20 teams competitively with said roster all year and curb stomped a UCF team twice that almighty Duke was a rimmed out layup away from losing to in the tourney.

But please, basketball experts, tell us more how the question on Penny's coaching is still up for debate.

Which TEAM will be the next to win its first CBB national title?

Dauster a little nicer to the Tigers this time

MEMPHIS
BEST FINISH: National title game, 2008

I’ve written too many words on Memphis over the course of the summer, but that’s because they may just be the most intriguing team heading into this season. Personally, I think they are overrated as a preseason top ten team this year, but I do think that Penny has positioned himself to be arguably the most powerful program in college sports within the next five years. He landed the No. 1 recruiting class this year. He was always going to get James Wiseman, but Penny also, landed guys like Precious Achiuwa, Boogie Ellis and Lester Quinones, none of whom are from Memphis.

There are two things that we can take away from this: 1) Penny is going to continue to bring in the elite of the elite, battling with the likes of Duke, Kentucky and Kansas for the top players in every class. 2) Perhaps more importantly, five of the seven players in this year’s Memphis recruiting class are guys that will spend two or three years in college.

Wiseman and Achiuwa will get the hype train rolling, but the true value of this class is that Penny set himself up really well for the future.
